In the past few days many threads in connection with the Boeing 767-400 have been started in a.net. Basically they deal with whether the aircraft was a failure for Boeing or not, and how it compares with Airbus' A330-200. While reading all the postings, I learnt that (i) only DL
purchased 764's from Boeing (and perhaps an African carrier also bought one or two... I don't know for sure), (ii) the 764 shares its avionics, cockpit and interiors with the 777, (iii) Boeing has sold less than one half of the number of 764's that it needs to sell to recoup its investment, and (iv) the a.net members cannot agree -as always- on whether CO
) are happy with its 764's or not.
Now, in connection with AM
, I have read in several threads that SkyTeam is pressuring AM
to acquire 777's for its flights to MAD
(and in the future to MXP
according to speculation) or, AT
LEAST, get more 763's (as I understand, AM
has several 762's but only one 763 at the moment). It seems to me that the 764 is perfectly suited for trans-Atlantic flights such as MEX
, has more pax capacity than its smaller siblings, and is cheaper to acquire (and most likely to operate) than the 772. So, wouldn't it be perhaps a good alternative for AM
to consider the acquisition of one or two 764's? Boeing is probably happy with AM
thanks to the 737's orders and options, so I am sure Boeing would gladly make a discount, especially if it is so far behind its sales target. And if AM
is not able to afford new aircraft and if CO
) is really unhappy with its 764's, maybe AM
could buy one or two used 764's from its codeshare (and SkyTeam) partner(s).
What do you guys make of it? Sure the 764 cannot match the A332 or the 772 in terms of cargo capacity (and this is important because I guess AM
's flights between MEX
and European cities attract mainly tourists, and touristic flights are very cargo-intensive), but I guess it must have at least a small edge over the 762 and 763 simply because of its lengthened fuselage, right? Does someone agree with me or am I only saying stupid things? I figure out that a 764 can offer an airline like AM
the best of both worlds (i.e., the best of the 767 family and the best of the 777 family) at a good price. I will appreciate your thoughts.
