"Airplane!" The Funniest Aviation Movie Around?

Wed Jan 07, 2004 11:33 am

I have seen Airplane! many times and would relate to it being one of the funniest and best aviation-related movies out there. I can recall many phrases such as the following:

"Could I have some coffee Johnny?", "NO THANKS!!!"

"Clearance Clarance, Roger Roger, Whats your Vector Victor?"

"We're going up to the tower! Rapunzel!"

"If he knows, the shit will hit the fan!
*shit hits fan*

"Ooops! Just Kidding!"
-- When johnny unplugs the power to the airport lights.

I find Johnny to be by far the funniest and most comedic. I can watch that movie over and over. It is acually what got one of my friends into aviation! LOL!

Some funny parts include when the Automatic Pilot has to be blown up again, when all the passengers are in line trying to calm the woman down, the "jive" of the black men, and how Striker is always missing his mouth!

I hope to hear what you recall and any other natable aviation funnies are welcome!

Cheers! Big thumbs up

Joey: Wait a minute! I know you. You're Kareem Abdul-Jabar. You play basketball for the Los Angeles Lakers.

Roger Murdock: I'm sorry son, but you must have me confused with someone else. My name is Roger Murdock. I'm the co-pilot.

Joey: You are Kareem! I've seen you play. My dad's got season tickets.

Roger Murdock: I think you should go back to your seat now Joey. Right Clarence?

Captain Oveur: Nahhhhhh, he's not bothering anyone, let him stay here.

Roger Murdock: But just remember, my name is ROGER MURDOCK. I'm an airline pilot.

Joey: I think you're the greatest, but my dad says you don't work hard enough on defense. And he says that lots of times, you don't even run down court. And that you don't really try . . . except during the playoffs.

Roger Murdock: The hell I don't! LISTEN KID! I've been hearing that crap ever since I was at UCLA. I'm out there busting my buns every night. Tell your old man to drag Walton and Lanier up and down the court for 48 minutes.

Lloyd Bridges' character Steve McCroskey has got to be one of the funniest roles he's ever done (although his role in Hot Shots! is similarly funny). Looks like he picked the wrong week to stop __________! (his most memorable quote.)

That inflatable autopilot stole the whole show, as well as the many subplots associated with flying in genral. I also liked the line, "There's no reason to become alarmed, and we hope you'll enjoy the rest of your flight. By the way, is there anyone on board who knows how to fly a plane?"

It's odd that such a spoof of disaster films ended up being such a successful box office hit, but leave it to a good cast and some great scriptwriting to get it done. My only complaint today is that much of the dialog and comedy seem seriously dated by today. BTW Look for a young David Leisure (that guy who did the Isuzu commercials for all those years) as one of the Hare Krishnas!

The scene in the control tower where everyone is staring at their screens and some wiseguy in the background opens one of the screens and pulls his dried laundry out.

McCroskey: I want a man that knows that plane inside and out.

Johnny: How about Mr. Rogers?

McCroskey: Get me Rex Kramer.(almost used that name as my screename)

Press: What does the plane look like?

Johnny: Oh, its a big, pretty white plane with curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol.

"We have clearance, Clarence."
"Roger, Roger. What's our vector, Victor?"

And Barbara Billingsley speaking jive is equally hillarious.

I love Airplane! and thought it was a spoof of several aviation movies. However, that changed when I saw the movie Zero Hour. Airplane! is so close a spoof of this movie that you are basically watching the same movie with one just being more serious than the other. I couldn't stop laughing because the two movies are so similar with the exact same plot, same or similar character names, many identical lines, identical scenes, and even the same engine sound effects.

I had the same experience when I saw Zero Hour as well Ha763...for you heavy fans of Airplane!, I highly recommend watching Zero Hour as its almost funnier than its original in some ways...the line "Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit smoking" was actually in Zero Hour in a serious form...that alone should pique your interest to see it...its on the classic movie channels every now and then...also, if you own the Airplane! DVD I highly recommend watching it with the commentary track once...its rather interesting and loaded with tons of interesting tidbits about the movie...

While I do think Airplane! is definitely the funniest aviation movie around, the funniest aviation scene to me was actually in the movie "The In-laws" starring Alan Arkin and Peter Falk, where they fly on a Lear 24 operated by "Wong Airlines" and Alan Arkin sits there in utter disbelief while the Chinese f/a gives him the safety briefing in Chinese...along with the hilarious gestures and hand signals...the rest of the movie has nothing to do with aviation but that scene causes me to almost break out in tears from laughing so hard...
