So Air Tran Is Getting IFE-WOW!

Wed Jan 07, 2004 12:12 pm

So now Air Tran is getting IFE....that is great. XM Satelitte, free at every seat on every 717 and 737. What will WN do? That might be a good option for WN...but XM satellite may be better than DirectTV, so many more choices....music, news, live talk...

Air Tran has gone one above B6 with XM Satellite for sure, looks like WN may be forced to offer some sort of frill one day.

IMO only I think this is better than Dircect TV and possibly cheaper? At any rate it would be more relaxing to fly w/ the tunes you really like...

Is the IFE that makes the stock price finally go back up?

as a shareholder, I hope so.......

Hi,

Knowing Air Tran, they will probably charge you extra for it.

Look for JetBlue to make a specific announcement regarding their upgraded IFE service today or tomorrow.... as if LiveTV isn't enough (for almost four years, I might add!!)!
I think it will be quite favorable when compared to AirTran's announcement! And, as a betting man, I'd say FL will charge for it....

Well Airtran and possibly Jetblue is good news for XM, but now I am wondering if Sirius satelite radio will be fitted into any airlines, possiblty Southwest?? I would also imagine that satelite radio is much cheaper for the airlines to offer then Direct TV, and with about 100 channels the customers should be plenty entertained.

No as stated, they will not. Unless, AirTran management is lying to us.

I hope they don't charge for it....
I think adding IFE like that definitely improves an airlines image (when compared with the other airlines that don't offer anything), but charging for it makes them look cheap! (are you listening, Frontier??)

i like DirecTV better, still. I like to keep my eyes focused on something as well as the window. when B6 intorduces digital music, it'll be nice... no XM, but you'll at least have airmap and music!

Airmap+music+window+laptop....what more could one ask for (even - the laptop!)

I expect B6 might add some of DirecTV's "Music Choice" channels, which would in essence be the same thing, commercial free music, only no sports or talk. That would be an easy solution.

Just One Question....

Wed Jan 07, 2004 1:17 pm

I just have one question, I know I've been away from the airport and off the past couple days, but where did you hear about inflight entertainment for AirTran?
Did AirTran announce this today? I tried doing a search on the internet and couldnt find anything...I mean I will hear all about it tomorrow when I go or if not then definitly next week at the agent council meeting.....but was just wondering in advance....
Could you post a link by chance...
Thanks,

Adding XM radio will not attract me as a flyer - I have an mp3 discman better suited to MY tastes, thank you. LiveTV/DirectTV still wins me over.

As the technology gets better and more available...say in a few years...maybe the LCC's will install Connexions for broadband internet access. Or at least, have power outlets be more common.

I realize that now almost all of Southwest's major LCC competition is now offering IFE in some way or another, but do really think that Southwest needs it, they've gone almost 33 years without, and are still doing JUST FINE.

Even though they say they have been looking at different things, smaller planes, IFE, etc.....I really don't see them doing anything major like this. I'm not saying the absolutely won't, but my bet is that they won't.

I do however like Wedgetail737's idea for the Connexion system to be installed, I think this could be VERY beneficial to SWA.

I still think Connexions is still in the proving part of its life. Like DVD players, I don't think we'll see a big boom in in-flight broadband for a few years. I could be wrong considering how fast PC's become obsolete.

If AirTran can put XM radio in its planes, then the legacy carriers have to do something to match it. I fly AA a lot between ORD and SEA, and those MD-80 flights with no IFE are soooooo borrrrrring.

This may sound like a silly question, but how will the XM work on an airplane? The Yahoo story has an AirTran ad showing a small key-pad with LCD screen in the armrest. But the story doesn't say how pax will hear the music. I can't imagine that an LCC is going to bother with headsets that would need to be cleaned after each use. Will there be little speakers? What if three pax next to each other want to listen to different stations? How does JetBlue do the sound with TV's?

Cheap headsets the pax can take with them. Thats probably what AirTran will do, and thats what jetBlue does.

Just one more nail in the coffin of the Legacy carriers. As I have posted previously, LCC and Legacy service is becoming indistinguishable - and you could argue that IFE wise, the LCC's are starting to be the leaders in Coach Class.

Syncmaster, yes, SW has gone since inception without an IFE and have done very well. But that was yesterday and the future holds another story - they will have to step up or begin to lose market share when going head-to-head with another LCC, especially on longer flights. However, due to their heft they are not pressed to do anything hurriedly.

One more nail in the coffin of air service to small towns.... so unfortunate....

I find it pathetic that many people cannot go three hours without watching ESPN or Game show network....

This radio thing is a brilliant idea though... much more variety for the passengers... and I would rather listen to music than be distracted by dozens of surrounding TV screens flashing different colors, especially on a nighttime flight...

Not to be the buzz kill here....but how many electronics and complex wiring systems can they cram into an airplane? When is enough, enough??? Maybe I'm wrong and most of these things will be wireless in the future but it seems like the airlines are trying to one up each other now. I like my electronics as much as the next guy but I can't help to wonder if we are looking at another Swiss Air type disaster down the road.

Regarding Southwest and their no frills....the only "frill" I'd like to see is the ability to get assigned seats in advance.

It sounds great- When do the installs begin and will they already be installed on the 73NG's or will this be a SONG type transition?  Smile

Is it only me, or do others think that with all the upgrades the LCC's are doing to upgrade the flying experience, i.e. IFE that they are quickly passing the experience that the so called majors offers inflight and service wise.

Well remember when LCC's meant, old planes, a lot of times delays, bad service at best, limited flights, limited inflight service and such, now it is the exact opposite, and all that I mention about the original LCC some of that applies to the so called majors?

Wow. That's pretty cool. Yeah, seems like to Locos are paving the way for nice flights now. AA, why would I fly your airline from Dallas to Anchorage for five hundred dollars (and only "snack" service) when I can now fly Frontier for $400 and get a PTV? Save a hundred bucks, get some cool stuff. Granted, I'd prefer AA's equipment to Frontier's, but hey- I am willing to overlook my own political beliefs once in a while. Especially for a hundred dollars! And now AirTran is adding XM, that's just too much to balance the equation- the loco's are pulling ahead, in my opinion.

Note that everyone here can get XM Radio on a flight, as long as you have the right equipment, and a window seat that faces the equator. Big grin

The latest XM receiving equipment is a USB module that hooks up to your laptop. Fire up the PC, plug in the module, aim the small panel antenna towards the window, and voila! Live in-flight entertainment.

When they say free - do they mean that the Radio is free - but you pay $5 for the headsets free?

Well it's easy for the LCC's to put this stuff in there aircraft, their fleets are 1/4 of the size of the major carriers. But the cost maintaining this IFE equipment will force unwanted expenses on the LCC's and then they won't be Low Cost Carrier's anymore. They'll be............., well just another airline!
