Getting Involved In Commercial Aviation

Wed Jan 07, 2004 2:39 pm

I am currently a high school student and love aviation. I am planning on working at a local private airport this summer but was wondering if there is anything that I could do to get involved in the airline industry doing pretty much anything, even if it isn't for pay. Anybody have ideas?

I would say that airline internships are the best way, but most of the time you need to be enrolled in college. A lot of times aviation universities will have internship programs set up with other airlines. For instance my school has programs set up with Chicago Express(ATA connection) and American Airlines. Anyway, for now you should try to get a job at a local airport. You may be fueling cessna's instead of 737's but at least it's something. You never know when your going to me the right person. (someone with connections, not a girlfriend) Of course, don't completely rule out the possibility of a job with an airline. Anything you do, you run the chance of making some good connections. It may not be an airline CEO but it may be someone who can get you to the next step and one step closer to your dream.

Most likely just volunteer at an airport, that's what I did for a while in high school. But to get the good internships you will need to be in college. I go to the University of North Dakota and love it. It has awesome internships available with Alaska, and the likes. I recommend one thing, if you do decide to pursue aviation as a career, four things matter. Grades, Hours, involvement during college, and weather you fly in. Good luck in whatever venture you pursue.

One more think than I'll shut up. If you want to make connections, and I'm sure that Frontiers4ever will agree with me, when you get to college, try out for the flight team. Most aviation universities have one. In fact my school just made it to the national competiton to be held at MITSU Tennessee in April. There are usually dozens of people from the airlines and beyond at the competitions. It never hurts to have a business card or two and. However, I have heard rumors that some airlines don't like to see flight team on the resume. Apparently because it turns flying into a competitons, but like I said it is a rumor and I'm not really sure if it's true. Hey that would make a good topic here. Maybe I'll do it one of these days. Anyway, good luck and most importantly fly safe!

GO LEWIS UNIVERSITY FLYERS!!!!

7574EVER: I really appreciate your help. I actually had the exact same thoughts in terms of networking when putting in the applications for the local private airport.
