Flying transatlantic out of EWR
(which is actually now a widebody flight most of the time) and DUB
etc is not really much longer than flying transcon. This comes up a lot and the bottom line is if these cities want to have transatlantic service, then this is as big of a plane that can economically work the route. Continental would love to fill a 777 7 days a week to all of these places, but it isnt going to happen, so they match capacity and demand, and probably do this better than any other carrier.
