Will Qantas Consider Former Ansett A320 Pilots?

Wed Jan 07, 2004 9:19 pm

Hello everybody.
I was just wondering, with Qantas buying the Airbus A320s this year for their discount offshoot, will there be any chance that some former Ansett A320 pilots might be able to fly for them? It would be great to see these people get a second chance, and to be back in their old offices again, where they belong, instead of wasting away on the ground. I`m not sure if i`m allowed to mention individual`s names on this forum, but i knew of a gentleman by the name of Spencer Flint, who was captain of the A320s , but i had not seen or heard of him since the mid 90s, but i assume he was still flying until Ansett`s last days. If anybody on here knows of him, i`d be really greatful if you could drop me a reply in here. Anyway, just thought it`d be great to hear that some ex Ansett crew might be back in the air again soon. Cheers  Smile

Also, does anybody know how many A320s Qantas are buying?

Qantas have ordered 20 A320 direct from Airbus with another 40 on option and will be leasing another 3 so in 2005 they will be operating 23 A320s. Ex Ansett pilots want to fly the Jetstar aircraft and QF are thinking of taking them on

QF confirmed this morning that they are leasing 3 A320's from SALE, (Singapore Aircraft Leasing), beginning this July.

I would have thought the point of having the A320's based in Melbourne was because of the number of ex Ansett A320 pilots that were based there that could fly them.

Ex-Ansett pilot will have to apply to Impulse/Jetstar like everyone else. They need to meet the criteria laid down at . I just hope the guys have maintained their currency otherwise they will not get a look in.

I think it was one of the main reasons for QF choosing the A320's knowing they won't have problems finding experienced pilots for that type of aircraft.
Why won't QF start by buying or leasing the 2 AN 320's that have been rotting away on the maintenance apron in MEL for the past 18 months or so?
It would save them having to lease them from Singapore or starting with the 717's as they were planning, I don't know how they will do this with any logic will they waste money repainting 717's in to Jetstar colours and then back to QF colours when the new A320's arrive? and will they initially be operating the 2 types together? It might make sense for Jetstar to operate both 717 and A320's after all theyre both very economical and the 717's are operated by ex Impulse staff.
We remind passengers all flights are non smoking, if you are caught smoking you will be asked to sit outside on the wing

The Ansett A320s are CFM powered and there are still some stored in MEL. Does any one know if the QF A320s will have the same engines as AN?

No. The Jetstar A320s will have IAE V2500s.

No QF won't be repainting the B717s back into QF colours as when every A320 arrives then 1 B717 will be retired from the QF fleet

ALL current Impluse pilots will convert to the A320 before any new pilots are taken on. The plan is for the B717 to leave the fleet, so current pilots have to be converted or sacked, the word is all current pilots will be offered conversion training first. As Impluse will have eventually have 23 A320 v 14 B717 they will obviously need some new pilots, but not right away.

Of course IF the B717s are kept, that's a different matter, as the pay rate A320/B717 at Impulse is exactly the same, so some pilots may elect to stay B717.

When all the first 14 A320s arrive Jetstar will have no B717s in the fleet
