Air Jamaica Back To GCM, NAS

Wed Jan 07, 2004 10:15 pm

Air Jamaica will resume flights to Nassau and Grand Cayman on January 29. The airline had stopped flying to both destinations in 2002 because of declining passenger loads. Both destinations were served by Air Jamaica Express, however the airline says there has been an increased demand for airlift to and from the islands in recent months.

Air Jamaica will fly from Montego Bay to Nassau daily except Tuesdays and Thursdays. Flights to Cayman will be everyday except Wednesdays, and flights will depart the Montego Bay Hub and return non-stop to Kingston.

That's quite interesting.

Do you know if that means the Air Jamaica Express service will be discontinued? They used to (still do I believe) have 2 or 3 dailies in here on Dash 8s. Does this mean 1 daily on a mainline A320 or will this be in addition to the Express service?

Actually LatinAviation; Air Jamaica never stopped serviced to Nassau (don't know about the Cayman Islands). They just reduced it from mainline to express. I live very close to the airport and I see their flights on a regular basis. Plus they have been advertising in the paper for a while now.

Correct, IslandBoy. That's the intent of the article, Air Jamaica will be resuming service in lieu or in conjunction with Air Jamaica Express.

I did not know that JM had stopped serving those two cities although it is true that the regional operation may have been more cost-effective on those shorter sectors. GCM in particular is quite a competitive route from Jamaica with Cayman Airways and JM fighting it out for passengers.

Isnt it odd that the outgoing flight is from MBJ (with KIN passengers having to connect in MBJ) but the return flight is non-stop to KIN? I have only seen such quirky scheduling with JM. Why do they do this?

Jm07 maybe because the return flight is for KIN passengers that need to connect through Montego Bay!
It's a simple turn around loop.

Is JM going to use an A320/21 I assume, on the GCM flight? Can they fill a 321 on the route, especially with Cayman Airways flying it?

Ah, well Airjampanam, that makes sense. I was just thinking in terms of convenience for KIN passengers travelling to GCM.

That type of turn around is very common for the island Jm017.
Don't forget Montego Bay is now the hub for JM.
Most of their flights now originate there, and return via KIN.

Airjampanam:

I noticed that when I checked the schedules. The rationale just escaped me (i.e., why having to CHANGE in MBJ if you are travelling from KIN to GCM). But I realise that there IS a reson why its done so. And as you rightly say, MBJ is now JM's hub.
