747's On 25L BRU

Thu Jan 08, 2004 10:02 pm

Do 747's ever land on 25L at BRU? Whenever I stand at the threshold, I always see them approaching on the other runway next to Brucargo.
I never think of the future - it comes soon enough.

Hello and welcome to the forums,

Well usually they use the 25R which is longer and is very close to the Brucargo terminal (less taxi time). Sometimes they come to 25L but it's very rare.
In the summer it's possible to spot some charter 747 passenger on 25L.
Unless there's maintenance going on, on 25R or too much traffic (unlikely at EBBR  Smile they will always use the 25L.

25L landings happen frequently, but landing on 25R has a practical advantage ...
Today, most 747's at BRU are full freighters. Landing on 25 R arrive them straight on Brucargo, avoiding the several miles of taxiing they need to reach the cargo apron after landing on 25L.

As already explained by others, 99% of the 747's are cargo aircraft indeed, so 25R suits their needs better than having to land on 25L and taxiing all the way to the Brucargo ramp (I think that they'd even prefer going into a holding pattern for 1 or 2 turns then landing on 25L when there's much traffic on 25R). Nowadays, BRU spotters will only see 747's land on 25L when there's a lot of departing traffic, 25R is closed (the whole length or only a part) for maintenance works (or some inop ILS etc) or when the 747 is a pax aircraft (Egypt Air, Royal Air Maroc, or even an ad-hoc special charter such as the BA 747-400 a couple of months ago).
