How Is Austrian?

Fri Jan 09, 2004 3:55 am

I see their deals, and for $239 (comes to about 317 USD including tax) for a return from IAD or JFK, I was thinking about taking a jaunt to Austria...I've never been, and the price is ridiculous.

So, here's my questions:

1: Do they honor UA Systemwide upgrades?
2: If they don't, how is their Y class service?
3: Is VIE worth visiting in the dead of winter?

There never seems to be a whole lot of discussion about Austrian, other than the F70 incident, so I am just looking for opinions?

Wow,

What a great fare!

The IFE is pretty good, and the service is not bad. If checking in at IAD, just get there early as the securty lines can be aweful.
PTV has a channel that has cameras you can view. Its no UA channel 9, but it's close enough.

VIE is a really great city. Beautifull monument, street, museum, church, shops.
If you can You must visit it. Remember that VIE was the capital of an empire for 400 years.

Austrian is also a very good airlines: one of most influent its shareholders is LH and VIE is very close to FRA and MUC, so OS hadn't the international glamour others airlines have.

I fly many times on Austrian Group Flight ( Laudair and Tyrolean belongs to the same group) both in Economy or Business class on shorth flight (MUC MXP LIN FRA LUX) and I have always flown very well.

I take one time a LAUDA long haul flight in Economy, to SEZ, on wich the service and seat pich could be the same as OS and I was very happy of this.

I think it could be a great trip for You.

I love Austrian Airlines.
Great service, friendly f/a's ,new planes, ontime, small hub airport.

Vienna is a wondeful city - but remember there is a reason the fare is soo cheap! It is the middle of winter. VIE is COLD and doesn't see many tourists this time of year. If that is a prob depends on what you do..if you are indoors museum gallery type no probs..but if outdoor walking the entire city type - get ready for the cold and bundle up!
p.s. there are some good ski areas outside Vienna if you ski..Ischgl is a good one. Das Triest is my fav hotel in Vienna.

cheers and enjoy the apple strudel!

I was just there over the holidays. Beautiful Xmas market around the Rathaus, but likely will be taken down by the time you arrive. As a previous post said, it is cold this time of year, but if you bundle up you'll be fine for short walks. Restaurants, coffee houses, wine and beer are wonderful. Hundertwasser's exhibit at the Kunsthaus is fabulous. Concerts...classical and opera....everynight at various venues. Vienna is good for a two or three day visit.

No they don't accept United's systemwide upgrades...I believe only Lufthansa does. But your FF status on United will be recognized with the Austrian Airlines equivalent. I flew Y on Austrian once years ago through Zurich to Dulles on an Airbus 300 or 310. Nice service but nothing spectacular....you get what you pay for.

What exactly are UA Systemwide Upgrades?

I'm just asking, because as LH Miles & More you can upgrade flights on UA (by using either miles or the upgrade vouchers that LH Senators - Star Alliance Gold - get), and when that was introduced LH mentioned that UA Mileage Plus members would be able to upgrade as well...

The main reason I'm asking is: OS also uses LH Miles & More as it's FF-program, and usually everything that works for LH will work for OS as well...

In principle, I'd just recommend calling Mileage Plus to find out about this...

United Systemwide upgrades are paper certificates given to frequent flyers. I get about a dozen year...not sure exactly the number... because I maintain my 100K flyer status. They're great because they're good anywhere United flies....not just North America. United also sent me a bunch as part of a US Open sponsorship promotion....Sweet Spot certificates. Those and the Systemwides state that they're good on United and Lufthansa and "not valid on flights operated by other airlines." But, it never hurts to ask.

BC--did you get any Sweet-Spots this year? I don't know what the deal is and why I didn't get any? I just got 4 Systemwides and that's it.

NW gives out more anyfare upgrades...

Sweet Spots came last year...mid year sometime well before the US Open. I believe they were sent only to 1K (100,000 miles/year) members.

I took OS this Summer from VIE to YUL. The service was absolutely not the best (not very kind) and the food was average (except the hot bread).
My Meal on my Air France connection flight from CDG to VIE was ten times better than on my 8 hours trip to YUL with OS.
The IFE is a good compensation for that, especially the front camera.

By the way, I took several Airlines this year for my monthly trips to YUL and Austrian was OK (much better than Air Canada or US Airways wich I took yesterday, but not better than LH or AF or even NW)

Last but not least, Vienna is a great city even in the coldest winter season !

So my advice, make your trip to Vienna and you will make your own opinion. If OS is not as good as you think, the marvellous city of Vienna will be a great compensation.

Mlsrar,

I guess you're from Wisconsin, so perhaps you won't mind the cold. I did the Dulles-Vienna thing 3 years ago over Christmas to visit family in Vienna. I was at the Rathaus (cool name for city council building) festival on Christmas eve, and that was quite charming -- thoroughly European.

Vienna in winter though... I was there for about 2 weeks, and I think I had maybe 2 days of sunshine. Cloudy and cold -- pretty dreary frankly.

Austrian Air seemed pretty average to me. The A332 I flew was new and nice. The one detail I remember is the meal. The food wasn't particularly good and there wasn't a lot of it. But the flight attendants walked around every 10 minutes with baskets of bread rolls. So you could fill yourself up with that.

Austrians onboard service (food) is different of course between grand class (c) and eco (y), like the price for the ticket is - but the interactive ptv/ife (on A332) is usually very good in both classes. until now i never got disappointed in grand class.

Vienna now until march celebrates it´s indoor season. While lot of open-air ice skating areas are around, it´s the time for indoor events. check out www.wien.info, www.viennahype.at or www.wien.at

Have a great trip.
regards

For the price you pay, the food the staff and flight is excellent value for money.... infact I can't wait for my next OS flight Big grin
We remind passengers all flights are non smoking, if you are caught smoking you will be asked to sit outside on the wing

OS has Teutonic efficiency with a charming edge.

VIE is worth visiting in any season, make sure you don't miss Salzburg also.

Nice trip

I have never flown on them, but my first encounter with their airfares made me want to drink something strong... I wanted to fly ARN - VIE, a round trip would have costed me about 1300 Euros! Economy...

It was during peak season, so instead, I flew ARN - AMS - Stuttgart for a fourth of that price with KLM.

Hope you're luckier than me!  Big grin

Completely agree with Marcopolo. Service is excellent and the operations smooth, while the Vienna - Schwechat hub is an example of "how airports should be".
