I'm betting on the Lagos service, but who knows? Maybe they're going to be the launch customer for the 7E7...no, wait..that's Frontier.  Big grin

Won't be on the SkyTeam website before it is officially announced. That's still my bet. Although this former Platimum would be happy if it had something to do with an removal of some of the stupid changes that have been made to OnePass....

Last time we heard a major announcment from CO, it was the addition of ElitePass, correct?

It would be interesting if it was an SFO base. They have about 50 flights, right? CO isn't too big in the west, it seems. (http://www.continental.com/travel/destination/routes/maps/co-us_200401.jpg) Didn't they have a hub at DEN a while ago.

Here it is, fresh off the wires:

HOUSTON, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Continental Air Lines (NYSE: CAL - News) announced today it will be the first airline to offer its customers transatlantic and transpacific regional jet service, effective April 1. The new service will be operated using new, state-of-the-art Embraer ERJ-145XXR aircraft seating 50 passengers in a comfortable layout with no middle seats. Continental has placed an order for 100 of the new aircraft, which will be delivered at a rate of six per month, replacing older 767 and 777 equipment on service to Europe from the convenient gateways of Newark-Liberty International and Houston-George Bush Intercontinental. The first route for the new aircraft will be from Newark to London-Gatwick, followed by Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam. Starting in September, the Embraers will replace 777 aircraft on Continental's routes to Tokyo and Hong Kong.

"We have been very pleased with the comfort and reliability of Embraer's regional jets here in North America, and are looking forward to building on our success by expanding the service throughout our global network," said Gordon Bethune, Continental's chief executive officer. "We are excited to be the U.S. launch customer for the ERJ-145XXR, and although the 767 and 777 have served us well, the regional jet is clearly the way of the future here at Continental."

The rumor is: CO is buying UA's SouthPac Operations and making SFO its hub.

And this is a pretty strong rumor.

A purchase of UA's South Pacific operations seems like a pretty crazy rumor, considering that CO has been in cash-conservation mode for the last two-plus years and still doesn't have the liquidity cushion they'd ideally like to have. Not to mention the fact that CO still possesses rights to Australia.

My bet would be on SkyTeam as well, given how quickly the DL codeshare has been moving along.

I can't find anything on this at all. It seems to be tightlipped if it is anything at all. It will not be buying UAL assets and moving to SFO, and despite the humour of the Embraer 145XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXLR, it will not be that either. Despite Gordon wanting to be the launch customer for the 7E7, it will not be that, therefore I believe it will be the formal announcement on the Skyteam issue, and I say formal as it is not a secret, everyone knows it is happening and Gordon has said so many time, or lastly it will be a new route announcement. My bet is one of the last two. If it is a new route announcement, I see it either being the IAH-MAD route, or the IAH-LOS route

I don't see CO going from the ballpark of 20 flights a day from SFO into a Pacific coast hub, not to mention they have 7 gates here. If they were buying UAL SoPac route, why would NZ be starting SFO? I would assume to compliments UAL's service. I'd love to see a CO hub here, my favorite airline outside my own. So my vote is for SkyTeam!

My bet is that it'll be Lagos, with the little slider at the end that Continental is "Adjusting" some of its fleet configurations to reflect "today's more value conscious traveler."

English translation: Significant reductions of premium seating in the domestic fleet, and possibly in the size of premium cabin in international machines, as well as the limitations of international upgrades to Y/H fares only, dropping the options to upgrade with miles+fee from lower fares.

FoxBravo,

You better check your calender. Yours is telling you its April 1st.
We still have 3 months to go before the annual Full of Bull sessions
start flying.

IF and thats a pretty big IF, the rumor is CO is buying SOPAC from UA,
time to kiss UA goodbye. That is their cash cow supposedly. When
carriers start selling off their money making assets, handwriting is on
the wall for their survival.

I for one would love to see Continental back in Australia, but buying UA's routes is ridiculous, simply because they don't have to. Any US airline can fly to Australia as long as they fly a min of 4 per week. Now if they want to take over UA's routes that is another matter because that would probably involve a deal to buy some 744's from UA.
Personally I would like to see CO do IAH/HNL/SYD and IAH/HNL/AKL with the 777's. You still offer the one stop service from IAH which you would do if you operated non-stop from LAX, but through HNL you can also feed passengers from SFO,EWR and LAX with the one stop option to SYD and AKL.
However it is probably something boring like joining an alliance.

I would be thoroughly shocked like never before if Continental were to buy up something like UA's Pacific network out of SFO. Aside from the anomaly that was the 1980s, wholesale acquisitions just aren't like Continental, and certainly aren't part of the culture that Gordon has developed in his 9 years with us. We built our presence from the ground-up, it's much smoother and certainly a great source of pride!

That said, I'm almost 100% positive it's going to be the official announcement that we will be joining Skyteam effective sometime mid-year. The time has come.

By the way, the only domestic FC capacity reductions are coming on the 757-300s, which, even when fully delivered, will only represent a small portion of our total fleet. And, as MAH4546 reported, they will be configured 12/210. You won't see much of these anywhere but EWR-Florida and IAH-MSY/DEN/West Coast.

Formal Sky Team announcement, new Air France Codeshares etc..

Purchase of landing slots and gates at DCA from US Airways..

Response to AA's new promotion of fly two NY-Florida or West Coast and get a free r/t anywhere..

As much as we'd like to see CO fly to the South Pacific, I just don't see it happening *at this time*, I have a feeling since CO's codeshare with DL is moving quite fast, and now NW's it starting to as well, it will be a formal announcement to join SkyTeam, and I see NW doing the same within a few months.

They already fly to the South Pacific. They are the only US airline flying to Bali and Cairns. They also fly to Palau and Manila.

Just as a point of fact, neither ROR nor MNL can be considered as "South Pacific" as they are both north of the Equator. I also believe that DPS is technically on the Indian Ocean.

I think this is very good idea for CO want make back to SYD & AKL again. You probably will see in the future and will make announcement with CO or DL. I am think would like to know about anything for the international expansion. If it is competition of UA, Air New Zealand, QF. Thanks!  Smile

I like the comments about the ERJ 145-XXX-R...and the lines...What a way to add fleixbility for the discerning business passenger...a flight departing every hour...wouldn't the ATC guys love that??? "Continental Light (no pun intended) to Tokyo Approach..." hahaha. Sorry, couldn't resist.

As far as the announcement...given the quick and desperate sounding pleas for buyers being made by US right now (yes, yes, I know it could just be posturing) this could be an announcement about some agreements made between the two...i.e. it looks good for US (if they truly want to salvage their airline) if they post for sale on Thursday and have a buyer on Monday...

I would also like to see CO expand more to the west coast and to the land of kangaroos, however I don't think that is what will be announced. Unfortunately, (only because it's boring and expected) I too believe this will only be the official announcement about entering into SkyTeam.

We shall see...

UA would sell their Pacific flying to CO about the same time they would sell it to NW (Never unless forced to.....) Gotta be SkyTeam announcement. Although, I wouldn't think this would be such a Big Announcement as it is certainly been assumed for some time now that CO will join as KLM is and of course NW will be. That was a funny line about the regional jets!
