In terms of land area, it is Riyadh King Khalid Int'l followed by Denver Int'l.

I thought DFW had DEN beat?

This has been asked many times. Use the search button. What a concept.

I did use the search button.

I meant in terms of acreage.

InnocuousFox,

No, DFW is right after DEN in the USA.

Someone posted the exact square miles of each a while ago. I'll try to search for it in the archives.

Okay I did some research.

Riyadh King Khalid Int'l is 87 square miles, Denver Int'l is 53 square miles and Dallas/Ft. Worth is somewhere around 30 square miles.

Hey... anything that requires 3 towers to see the bloody airport is OK by me! (DFW) Also, there's something surreal about running 4 arrival streams at once! 3 of them parallel!

DEN can handle four simultaneous cat III ILS landings. Not only that, no taxiway crosses a runway.

I agree that DEN is laid out in such a fashion as to make the traffic flow better. They also had room to burn out there east of the city.

DEN is a miracle of modern aviation planning.

It was also the first US airport certified for triple simultaneous approached.

Wow. Denver is larger than the cities of Buffalo and Boston proper. 43 and 42 square miles respectively. So imagine gutting Boston and putting in a super airport. Incredible when you really think about it.

I believe DEN's eventual expansion plans call for up to 12 (Twelve) runways in the long term...quite amazing really...DEN is a pain in the butt to drive to...the access road from I-70 to the terminals (solely built for that purpose, there is nothing else along it except airport hotels, rental car agencies, and a gas station), is something like 8 miles long...

I know this probably isn't true, but Brussels airport terminal is ridiculously huge. I literally walked over a mile around that place. It was really nice and modern though.

At least Pena Blvd. isn't a toll road anymore.  Smile
DEN or DIA, as some like, will eventually have 8 N/S runways, 4 W of term, 4 E, and 4 E/W parallel to current two.
When they were building it,I got the plans and layout for the runways, and at the time, it seemed way too much and really odd. But now, not that big of deal, as they slowly build up to that.

The number two answer:

EDW including Muroc Dry Lake

The number one answer:

The Pacific Ocean, even though it does not get much traffic since PanAm retired the Boeing 314.

-King Khalin International Airport, servicing Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, is the largest in terms of acreage (55,040 sq. acres).
-Chicago O'Hare (ORD) is largest in terms of number of aircraft. (909,535 takeoffs and landings in 2001)
-Atlanta's Hartsfield (ATL) is number one in most passengers being served. (No official number)

In terms of land acreage, I think the US airports rank:

1.) DEN
2.) DFW
3.) PIT
4.) MCO
5.) IAD
6.) MCI

Overseas I have no idea really... Riyadh is the largest in the world, and CDG and AMS certainly take up quite a bit of room as well. MUC, OSL and ATH are all new airports, although I don't know how they rank in terms of acreage.

Mir, that roof does not look weird. Living here in Denver, I think it was a great idea to put that roof in since the mountains is what Colorado is mostly known for.

So does anyone knows wich airport is the biggest one in terms of builiding area??

I guess would be either JFK or ORD, LHR has planty of terminals and concourses as well. I think now after the Terminal 5 is built it will be the biggest one.

The funny thing is, look how much they differ in terms of capacity. DEN and DFW dwarf the other guys!

Just GUESSING on the European ones (I wish I knew a source for the facts), here would be my European top 3 list:

1) Amsterdam (thanks to the Polderbaan, which extends the airport area quite a bit)
2) Paris CDG
3) Madrid
4) Rome FCO

Anyone can comment/validate?

How busy is Riyadh's airport, why would they need all that space?

Just to answer a question above, the master plan for DEN as far as terminals and buildings goes is 5 concourses of 100 gates each, doubling the size of the current terminal, and making another terminal just like it on the north side of the concourses. Pretty substaintial plans, but they're just for the "maximum"...I highly doubt it will ever get that big!

Aside from the land acreage...

DFW operates 7 runways. Does any other airport have as many?

Also, I think DFW must be up there in terms of gates. I thought it had the most now and the new terminal will increase that even more. Is this correct?

Surely, HKG must be up there somewhere? I did a search because I remember hearing that the roof at HKG's terminal building was the world's largest and instead, I came up with http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/127422.stm, which states that it is "the world's largest airport".

Perhaps they're referring to just the terminal building? I can't imagine that a two runway airport would be bigger than either DFW or DEN.

"DFW operates 7 runways. Does any other airport have as many?"

Some may (ORD has 6) but they can't use them all at the same time like DFW can. On the contrary, 7 runways is deceiving since 4 of them are ARR/DEP pairs.

If we're talkin' developed space (not vast open prairie like DEN or endless sand dunes like RUH) then DFW takes the cake. It is the largest expanse of concrete on the planet, and except for some treelines and drainage areas out on the perimeters, along with purposely empty areas for approaches, is mostly space taken up w/runways, buildings, roads and radars. The center hiway is 9 miles long (from hwy 183 up to the leadin to hwy 121). While it has 7 rwys and in a technical sense all are usable at once, their uses are quite restrictive. (12R is used almost exclusively for approaches, 12L only for Saabs and the like outbound). Don't know the combined length of taxiways, but would imagine it to be on the order of 50 miles or so. I've counted (at midday) as many as 9 Fedex and 7 UPS craft on the ground at once, along with the usual mix of ABX, etc amounting to another dozen or so lined up at the various cargo buildings. It is (to my knowledge) the only field in the world with 2 active control towers (plus the old one kept for a backup, along w/AA & DL ground towers). If you walk from A2 to C39, it is a 1.5 mile hike (and there's still Term E on the east side to go, but you can't walk to it). When the new overhead transit system is finished it will encircle all six terminals (D & F currently being built) and if memory serves me will be about 9 miles in length. The last LANDSAT composite photo I saw of the entire US (done a couple yrs ago) taken from the satellite about 22k mi out, you could make out the outline of DFW (the only manmade object visible). Now having given all these superlatives, I would add that I do not like that airport and avoid it like raw onions (BLEAH!) if I have a choice....but it is big. As an aside, I seem to remember about 30 yrs ago that YMX was to cover about 140 sq miles when fully developed (which could contain, say, the entire city of Philadelphia and its 1.5 million or so residents, with a little space left over. But since that fair city has since decided to make YUL the pax gateway and relegated Mirabel to freight/charters, dont know if the original plans still hold)

Is DFW busier than DEN or the opposite? Usually the airport with more traffic should be larger, but often this is not the case.

DFW is busier than DEN for traffic movements, cargo, and passenger numbers. ORD and ATL both beat out DEN and DFW in all those measures in spite of having smaller land areas.

DEN was basically built out away from Denver on a large swath of undeveloped (aside from farm & ranch land) prairie. They had the luxury of building a very efficient airfield for connecting operations. The problem is that they spent far more than perhaps they ought have initially, and the terminal's location isn't exactly convenient to the city. But DEN's design could probably handle 100 years or more of growth, assuming our descendants are still using airplanes then.

Also, I think Kansai's terminal is the longest building in the world.

Well, ORD will have 8 runways in the future (a confirmed plan from a few years ago). The funny thing is that, although DFW and DEN are massive and have all those runways and all, they still handle fewer pax than LAX. We have 4 runways and great weather so we do well and don't need all that other stuff. We do need more gates and a 5th runway though, in case Jim Hahn is listening
