How To Deal With Other Rude Passenger?

Fri Jan 09, 2004 3:52 pm

On this topic I'd like to hear how fellow passengers have had to deal with another rude or inconsiderate passenger, i.e. one who keeps kicking the back of your seat, or something like that. What do you do? I've been on that situation and I'd like to hear how my friends here at a.net have dealt with something similar.

Thanks,

I enjoyed how Arnold (I'm not even going to attempt to spell his last name but you all know who I'm talking about) dealt with the kid who was kicking his seat in the movie "kindergarten Cop". "Hey kid...Come over here......If you don't stop kicking the back of my seat, dis is what I'm gunna do to you." Then he breaks a pencil in two with his thumb and the kid looked like he had just wet his pants.

If it is a talkative person sitting next to me and I just want to sit and relax, I usually just ignore the person. If it was a kid kicking the back of my seat, I would first ask the parent to be a parent. If that did not work, I would TELL the parent to be a parent. And if that didn't work, I would talk to a flight attendant (the next time one came down the aisle, I wouldn't call one for that).

There were four of us traveling on a Dash 8 on the way back to university after the holidays. We were seated across one of the 2 - 2 rows.

This obnoxious, big shot, stuffed-shirt businessman seated in the left aisle seat one row in front of us started giving the lone F/A a hard time as soon as we reached cruise altitude. He insisted alcoholic drinks should be provided free and when they were not, started cussing the F/A and the airline. She turned away from him and walked forward to the galley, but before she came back from the galley with the next tray of drinks, this guy put his feet on the armrest of the seat across the aisle to block her path and demanded free booze. She declined again and he moved his legs and let her pass, still cussing her. She did a good job igoring this and walked forward to the galley again. Then the guy shouted out "Waitress!! Where's my drink??" and put he feet on the armrest across the aisle again. Everyone aboard was looking at this guy now.

At this point one of my classmates, Keith said "This guy is really starting to make me mad." and he stood up and walked over to Mr. Big Shot. The other three of us got up and stood beside Keith. Keith is 6FT4, 240LBS, but the rest of us are 6FT, 200LBS anyway. Keith could not stand straight due to the low ceiling in the Dash 8 and the back of his head was against the ceiling when he leaned over Mr. Big Shot. All Keith said is "If you don't stop it, I'm gonna kick the shit out of you right here and now."

The guy took his feet of the armrest and didn't say a word for the rest of the flight. I'm sure the F/A must have wondered why he suddenly stopped acting like a complete idiot.

I still think a mid-air brawl would have been a more interesting outcome!  Big thumbs up

Good job Skydrol. But I hardly think a mid-air brawl would have solved anything. If the Big shot asked for it you give it to him that's for sure. But thank God it did not go that far. Not on a Dash 8 !!

I will usually do the over the shoulder look followed by a nasty scowl. Usually works.

Good job!  Big grin

Well I can imagine that in the States with all the alerts and fear all you would have to do it whisper to the flight attendant that you heard the offender talking to his friend about a bomb and I am sure that as soon as the plane lands the offender party will have a nice welcoming party awaiting him/her.  Big grin

It was around Christmas and I was traveling from MCO-EWR and this little kid kept kicking the back of my seat. and the parents told the kid whose name was michael (they only shouted his name 14 times) to stop, which wasent helping. Not wanting to scream at the top of my lungs for him to stop. I quickly pulled out the phone that was in the seat back and turned around and faced him.

"Mikey." I said "Iv'e got Santa on the phone and he wants to know if your being a ggod boy and not kicking the back of other passengers seats....What do I tell him?"

Kid never kicked the back of my seat for the rest of the trip.

Clever use of the phone. I'da probably just beat him over the head with it Joe Pesce style. Yours is more imaginative.

I always deal politely with the kicking the seat and whatnot.

I do not deal politely with loud drunks or people that are rude to flight attendants.

Greg, you would be the big shot on that flight. Good old Greg, with his
nasty "Who cares about the Flight Attendants" comments.

I recently flew Iberia on MEX-MAD(A340). A 10hr flight with Iberia's service is beforhand terrible with rude flight attendants. Behind me sat two french girls. I could smell their stench most of the flight. A bit past midflight I was trying to get some sleep, when I finally went to sleep I was woken up by the french b@%$#! who were wrestling and shouting and kicking my seat constalty. I turned around and and just asked them to stop. After several times I turned around and said, 0hhh so this is why so many people hate the french. They stoped for the rest of the flight

leave it to the cabin crew, thats what they are paid, and insured to do. If things turn nasty you could be held responsibe for breaking the peace, and If you/other person is injured, you may be liable.

About a year ago I flew AC YVR-YYZ - bulkhead middle section 762 Y class...behind me were 3 generations of women, related.

Well, grandma just couldn't stop fishing in my seat pocket. After about 3 hours of fiddling around I had the whole thing scripted in my head...as follows...

"Excuse me, ma'am, but next time you stick your hands down there, imagine you're putting your hands up my ass...you want to do it as RARELY, and as GENTLY as possible..."

Hours later at the carousel, the woman turned out to be the mother of a very good friend of mine. Thank Caesar (Bloody Mary to the non-Canucks) that I hadn't said anything...

Last night, BOM-DEL on S2, the gent in the middle seat next to my aisle kept trying to read my book, peer into the palmtop screen and kept getting up to go to the loo. It was like he had a rubber neck stuck on rollerball feet.

I finally asked him to autograph the airline magazine.

But by and large, one tries to be as un-aggressive as possible while flying.

When you want to be left alone by fellow passengers by your side, just open a copy of the Bible or the Al-Koran and start reading, it works literally like a miracle.
