Best Way To Costa Rica From Europe

Sun Jan 11, 2004 5:02 am

I promised a friend of mine to look up the best option to travel
to S.Jose. Are there any non-stop flights from Europe? Perhaps LHR,CDG or FRA. Not out of AMS that I know of.
I case not, what would be the best carrier to choose for.
I guess some US-carrier transferring in lax or iah or something.
Any help is welcome here!

Fastest, easiest way (maybe not the cheapest though):

KL to MIA and on with TACA (LR is now part of the group) One-stop
BA to MIA and on with TACA (all within OneWorld but 2 stops)
AM all the way from CDG.

I flew from Europe to Costa Rica (San Jose) twice :

First Time: CDG-MIA-SJO-MIA-CDG
CDG-MIA-CDG with AF
MIA-SJO-MIA with AA
(Now I think AF has an agreement with TACA but I'm not sure).

Second Time: CDG-IAH-SJO-IAH-CDG
All flights with CO.

I think Continental has the best offers in flying within Central America. The service is very good, the food is OK, for me it's the best North American Airline, and the easiest way to fly to this region.

You can fly with CO from all the main European cities to Newark and then to SJO (they fly daily EWR-SJO), or from LGW and CDG to IAH and then to SJO.

It's a great airline (better than AA).

Marcopolo747: AM isn't flying to SJO, MEX-SJO it's Mexicana.

you can also fly to EWR or IAH via Continental and continue on through them. Also, Costa Rica is very popular with German tourists, so you may be able to find something through Lufthansa or via a charter from Germany.

Did I misread your question? Don't you want to fly out of AMS? I think you can fly direct with Martinair. check their website http://www.martinair.nl , you can book it online.

You have a few options from AMS through Miami. Both KLM and Martinair offer service to MIA and TACA and AA serve SJO.

Don't fly to LAX...

Martinair is the only airline flying direct scheduled between Europe and Costa Rica (the flights has a stop in MIA). If you don't want to fly Martinair the only scheduled option is to transfer at a US airport (EWR, or MIA).

If you want a decent price and to avoid US transit problems try AC through YYZ......might have to overnight on one leg....but I know someone who did it from LHR and preferred it immensely to MIA.....last week 3 hours to clear immigration at MIA...

In February, United begins non stop flights from Dulles to Costa Rica, too. That's much better than flying all the way to Los Angeles.
Airliners.net has many forums. It has spell check and search functions. Use them before posting!

Aren't taxes twice as high when you connect/change planes with an American airline? You'll certainly have to check.. US Airline taxes are getting sky high these days and doubled after 11.09 when flying from EU to Costa Rica..

Hi KLMCedric

Try LH498 FRA-MEx (LH got the cheapest fares from Europe to Mexico)
And then connect with Mexicana take the MEx-SJO. And same thing for your return!

Iberia does not fly MAD-SJO. Iberia's flights to SJO are all from Miami. There are no non-stops between Europe and San Jose, there are three direct services, however. Martinair AMS-MIA-SJO and AMS-MCO-SJO and Condor/Thomas Cook FRA-MCO-SJO.

I don't know if you want him/her to go first to LAX en route to Costa Rica. It is way too west. I am sure that some airline from Europe must fly non-stop to SJO. Probably AF or LH. If not, you can tell your friend (s)he can also fly LH from FRA to MX), Mexico">MEX and then fly MX to SJO (and get LH miles on both). I believe the LH flight from FRA to MX), Mexico">MEX arrives around 18:45 and the MX), Mexico">MEX-SJO flight leaves MX), Mexico">MEX at 19:40, so (s)he won't lose a lot of time in the airport.

Another option is DL. They have non-stop flights from BRU, AMS, CDG, MXP, MUC, ZRH, FRA and STR to ATL and then non-stop flights from ATL to SJO and to a city in Guanacaste, Costa Rica called Liberia (LIR).
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738
