Charlie Oscar Foxtrat Echo Alpha?

Sun Jan 11, 2004 1:18 pm

Hello, couldn't find this already discussed in the archives so thought I would bring it up.

This business of referring to aircraft in this manner, for example BA Concorde G-BOAF as Alpha Foxtrot, where did it start and is this a standardized thing?

And if so, what is the alphabet? A is alpha, is B Beta? C is Charlie, what is D? E is Echo, F Foxtrot G Golf and what about the rest?

Is Concorde G=BOAA Alpha Alpha?

Your comments would be appreciated.

This is done because some letters sound very similar and it is easy to confuse them when just saying the letter (ie: B, E, and P). So, the word is said instead. The following is the offical phonetic alphabet for the FAA.

Alpha
Bravo
Charlie
Delta
Echo
Foxtrot
Golf
Hotel
India
Joliet
Kilo
Lima
Mike
November
Oscar
Papa
Quebec
Romeo
Sierra
Tango
Uniform
Victor
Whiskey
X-Ray
Yankee
Zulu

Whew...that was a lot of brain power right there.  Big thumbs up

One of those new rules implemented for flight safety reasons, so terrorists can't track flights on their scanners (I think that's the reason anyway). In Aussieland, most flights now go by their tail registrations on ATC, no more flight numbers are used. So you'll have something like Tango Mike Juliet for a Qantas flight.

I used to live in Delaware, home of MBNA Bank. MBNA used to stand for "Maryland Bank, National Association" but once they left Maryland, the official party line was that MBNA stood for nothing. AOPA, one of MBNA's affinity credit card customers jokingly made a sign that read MBNA really stands for "Mike Bravo November Alpha." The problem was that people in the community thought that MBNA stood for Mike Bravo November Alpha (didn't get that this was really a joke) and the banner was quickly brought down...but the pilots/aviation crowd had a small chuckle. Hmm...after writing this...I guess you had to be there  Big grin

Actually, I've seen it spelled three different ways in three different books: Joliet, Juliet, and Juliett...go figure!!

Oh well, it's the pronunciation that counts  Smile/happy/getting dizzy
