New Air Zimbabwe Website

Sun Jan 11, 2004 5:20 pm

Thought people might be interested in the new Air Zimbabawe website. I guess they should get an "A" for effort. Interestingly, the site says they will start service to Dubai soon.

Indeed a nice site. I want to fly once on Air Zim and I'm looking forward to visit at least Vic Falls this year.

Look at the titles on the picture of the aircraft in the banner - the picture has been inverted!

Yeah great airline website. Simple and easy navigation with pertinent information ready at hand.

What a shame they can't get their country running in a similar way. It's amazing that this airline manages to survive in spite of Mugabe and his reforms.

Tourism and business into Zimbabwe has been succesfully hamstrung for years to come. Sad and infuriating.

BBC World Service reported today that two journalists were arrested in Harare for defaming the President.

Apparently, these two journalists, from the country's only independent newspaper, wrote an article on how Mugabe's henchmen seized one of Air Zim's two 767s so that he and his family could jet off to Malaysia for a vacation, therefore stranding hundreds of passengers.

Well, it's not exactly something that can be considered unheard of if an AirZim aircraft is seized for Mugabe: it's happened several times before, it'll happen again.

Once they were even smart enough to seize an aircraft for him so he could fly to Namibia for what was called a "fishing trip" with Sam Nujoma - but the really smart thing was that this plane was supposed to fly dozens of journalists, on invitation from the ZTA (Zimbabwe Tourism Authority) from VFA to HRE...

I myself once had the dubious pleasure of sharing a plane with Mugabe - I was returning from a tourism show in Harare and he was on his way to a summit of whatever organisation in Cuba, so they simply seized all of Business Class (except for one row) for him and his wife, the rest of the delegates were spread throughout the plane (and not really behaving brilliantly).

Fortunately I hadn't spent the extra money for C-Class, but - even more fortunately - they somehow got him to accept a plane full of passengers instead of his usual way of flying...

I have actually never before (or since) experienced such a soft takeoff and landing on a 767 (or any plane for that much) - but all the announcements on board were a bit annoying, because they were so long: every announcement began with "Honorable Comrade President Mugabe and First Lady Mrs Mugabe, Honorable Members of the Cabinet of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Dear Passengers..." (or something like that)...

Smile - it confuses people!

Great improvement over their previous effort at a website - now just to see if they remember to update it!

Have flown Air Zim several times in the past year, and I'm always surprised at how good their service is, when you take into account the state of their home country at the moment. I honestly hope they manage to survive, but with tourism having pretty much collapsed there, they'll have a hard time of it - none of their routes outside JNB & LGW are exactly money-spinners...

You are right. These things seem to happen quite frequently. A freind of mine told me how on a flight from Harare to LGW, Mugabe was on baord and having to attend a meeting in Madrid. The plane was simply diverted to MAD without any notification to passengers, therefore causing a delay into LGW.

I too hope this airline can survive the horrible Mugabe regime. How much you wanna bet that these plane "seizures" are flown gratis to the government? Is Air Zim wholly gov't owned? If not, I bet they still provide complementary service to Mugabe, Inc. I wish that old bat would drop dead for ruining an otherwise wonderful country.
