What can one expect El Al Isreali Airlines?

Mon Jan 12, 2004 8:47 pm

What can one expect on El Al... I cant find any cabin picture, crew pictures, or ANYTHING. What is it like. Is there a security interview prior to boarding like in the UK, Germany, and Netherlands? What about food, attitude, seating, airport, ANYTHING !!!!!!

El Al has nice cabin crew. The seats are average, the service is average but the security screening on the US and even more in Tel Aviv is the worst. It takes you forever, they will ask you question question and questions about everything. It the hell, but it`s for your safey.
I would always fly with them if I had to, but would always choose CO if I would fly them from the US!

What can one expect El Al Isreali Airlines?

Planes are in good condition, moderate pitch seating, average service, (very basically) polite cabin crew.
I was flying El Al to and fm TLV for the last 12 years or so, and obviously used to security scrutiny/questioning, 3 hour check-in time, arrivals and departures in the middle of the night, extremely long queues at arrival in Ben Gurion, etc...
My last experience however turned sour, for reasons unknown to this date, while transiting through ATH, I was denied to board on the flight to TLV.
No explanation was given and no arrangements were made to help collect my luggage (which had already been checked) or find a place where to stay (it was 2 in the morning).
My ticket (business) was refunded 10 weeks later.
Understand if you can.

They have people watching you as you stand in line to see if you even remotely look suspicios or nervous. Then they ask you alot of questions. As you continue in line you are asked the same questions again, maybe in a different order by another person. If your answers arent the same to them as the first time, then the magnifying glass comes out and you are put under it (so to speak)...you get the royal question and answer routine. Who knows....maybe even RUBBER GLOVES come out....just kidding...(I hope)

A tip for anyone traveling to Tel Aviv on El Al, for your return flight:

El Al has an advance check-in facility next to the Arlozorov St. Train Station in Tel Aviv. It costs NIS20 in cash, but lines are usually shorter there. The El Al web site has information about this service. Please note that the security check process is exactly the same as it would be at the airport: same personnel, same process, same questions. You leave the luggage at the facility and receive your boarding pass, saving precious time at the airport, and you don't have to haul your luggage around as much.

Some other airlines also offer similar services. It is good to check before your return flight.

You can definitely expect two things :

Never ending security checks so be prepared to arrive at the airport very, very, very, early and load yourself with a lot of patience.

Never plan any flights on Saturdays, they don't work on Saturdays !

Shalom !

You can expect lots of security (LY is renowned for that)
And the following treatment:
(this is what I have observed on my LY flights ex. TLV and not a racial, religious post)

1. If you are Isreali, only about 5 mins of questions..purpose of trip, duration, etc...
2. Jewish from other country, about 10 mins of QA..relatives, purpose of trip, etc..
3. Non Jewish European/White European..about 20 mins of more intense QA, sometimes with 2-3 agents..together or seperately..questions such as:
1. Reason for trip, how you buy the ticket? why you buy the ticket? Who paid for the ticket? Where you bought the ticket? How much money you make?
What job you have? Who you work for? Are you married? What do your parents do? What does your brother do? Is your brother married?
and it goes on an on..they ask the same questions 2 or 3 times..

4. Non Jewish Blacks, Asians, non-whites get same but slightly longer.

5. Arabs or muslims..from what i saw, they get about 40-50 mins of questions and MAJOR GRILLING..often they get taken to some Private room for who knows what...I guess that would be expected with current situation in Israel.

My recommedation is to fly LY only if you are not easily offended and dont mind repetitive invasions of your privacy and LOADS of personal questions. The Isrealis discrimate and DO PROFILE(with good reason I guess) and make no apologies about it. LY is not an airline for the PC Folk thats for sure.

ONCE you finally make it onboard the service is OK. Nowhere near the level of BA, LH, LX, KL or similar..on the really long flights they do to NA, the service is lacking. Expect full flights, screaming and very demanding pax (it is a fact) and mediocre food.

hope that helps!

OK, but what about Sammy Davis, Jr. (if he was alive)? What kind of screening would he get?

I would think that Sammy would be classified as Jewish from another country. Jewish and white don't necessarily go together.  Big grin

BTW, it is not only LY. The same security personnel and screenings are used for any flight out of TLV.

The 2 questions that are asked routinely at US check-in (Who packed your luggage? Has your luggage been under your supervision since you closed them?) have a much deeper meaning in Israel, as there has been a case of a terrorist planting a bomb in his fiancee's luggage without her knowing about it.

When you face Israeli security at the airport, be absolutely serious, truthful and patient. It is done for your security.

Expect the airport equivalent of a nice swim in sulphur and molten lead if you do handling for them. Oh, goes for some (unnamed) US carriers too. Could tie up the entire ramp for half a day. Big grin

Cheers,
Fred
I thought I was doing good trying to avoid those airport hotels... and look at me now.
