LAX Connection Times!

Mon Jan 12, 2004 11:26 pm

Hi guys from sunny, but windy Teesside!
Will be travelling to USA for 2 weeks in october,my problem is this,
Heading from SAN to LAS via LAX with United, arrive LAX 12:15pm,depart LAX at 12:55pm.Now is it just me or is this a bit "tight",40 minutes to connect in Lax!!,is this the norm for LAX?,should I be worried about this?,we might get the connection but will our bags make it?
Was thinking about purchasing Southwest flight direct to LAS from SAN.
So guys what do you reckon?,airliners.net members I need some advice!

Looking forward to your replies.

Cheers

I can only speak from my own experience, but I had a similar problem in August of 2002, when flying AA. I had to go from my arriving flight (YYZ-LAX) at terminal 4 to my departing flight (LAX-LAS) from terminal 3 within a 45 minute window, including passing through security at terminal 3.

AT THE TIME (that's the key!!!), there was no problem whatsoever...it took longer to walk between terminals than it did to get through security and to the gate. If your connection is within the same terminal, I'd say no problem. There's always of course the possibility of delays on the first leg of your flight, but I wouldn't call it a huge one (personally).

Others might think otherwise but I think you'll be just fine!!  Smile

Shouldn't be a problem. If I can make a 40 minute connection in ATL on DL, then you can certainly make this connection at LAX on UA. The terminals (6, 7, 8) are clustered together. Assuming your first flight is on-time, no problem!

If you are going to LAS with united you shouldn't have a problem because you should stay in the same terminal meaning all you have to do is step out of one gate and walk into the other without going through security. I think

yes, the 120's are used on the SAN-LAX and they still are in T-7 you should be fine.. What day of the week are you going to LAS? Friday and Saturday are very busy for T-1.. Or are you going to LAS on UAL?

Just remember, you might be able to make the connection, but your luggage might not. I had a 40 minute connection time in ORD with AA a few months ago.

Both flights were on ERJ's, and the gates were right next to each other, but my luggage still didn't make it.

Thanx for all the replies guys!

Socalatc,

Will be flying UAL forward from LAX to LAS,will be a thursday, late october.
My main concern is my luggage,(and the girlfriends!),just can,t see 40 minutes being enough time, last time I was in the USA was six years ago,did this SAN-LAX-LAS with UAL,but had about 90 minutes between flights.
Theres nothing worse than arriving at your destination, but your luggage does not!.That Southwest flight is looking more appealing!

FWIW, 40 minutes is within UA's published minimum connect times for LAX. They factor in both passenger movements and baggage transfers when calculating these times.

Barring any unforseen delays, you'll be fine.

Is that girlfriends or girlfriend's? I like to think the first!  Big grin

Anyway, at LAX 40 mins is more than enough, I think. Especially since you apparently won't have to shuttle from UAX building by UA maint. bldg.

But, as a WN person, fly WN!!!

Hope trip is good.

I would fly Southwest (or America West) nonstop. The nonstop flight is short enough, adding a connection in LAX easily doubles your travel time.

The EMB-120 uses SkyWest's remote terminal at LAX, so you'll have to take a shuttle bus to Terminal 7 to board the United Airlines jet. Some SAN-LAX flights are operated by the CRJ, last I heard these were operating from Terminal 8. There are lots of SAN-LAX flights, and if you really want to go that way, you should be able to get on an earlier one. Just ask. I used to do that when UA Shuttle would try to give me <30 minute connections at SFO.

If you want to stick with UA, show up at SAN a little early. With flights every hour, and a peak times every 30 min, you can often just hop on a flight as soon as you get to the terminal.

On the other hand, if you fly from SAN-LAS on a Thursday with WN you're in for a treat. That's the day that the strippers who live in SAN fly to LAS for the weekend. I'm not joking, it used to be an event for the ramp workers. On Thursday night for dinner you go over to the WN terminal and just watch the gorgeous women check in for LAS flights!

Ohh-er should have tried out America West  Smile but thats ok, everyone should give WN a whirl at least once. WN will get your luggage shoveled out pretty quickly at LAS and will get you there usually on time. Cant be THAT long of a flight anyway!

If you need any recommendations for LAS just message me!

Thanx Aanalyst for that most valuable piece of info!!!
Dont think the girlfiend would approve  Smile

Amhilde,
Keep forgeting about America West, think they have 4 nonstops a day SAN-LAS,probably a bit more expensive than Southwest.
Flown with America West on my first visit to USA,JFK-LAS,the flight was packed,I was at one end of the plane, girlfriend was at the other, ticket staff were not overlly friendly, mind you it was early in the morning if my memory serves me correct,A320 was ok!

Southwest generally takes reservations 4-5 months in advance. Currently, their web site says through June 11.

Also, United Express in San Diego operates from the old PSA HQ/ hangar turned into commuter terminal. At least security line are very short!! Unlike WN gates (except SMF) there. That might also sway your vote.
Here is another alternative: HA SAN-HNL-LAS(via LAX). That would be fun!!
Probably a wee bit more cost than nonstop or LAX connection!  Smile

SprxflySWA:
Here is another alternative: HA SAN-HNL-LAS(via LAX).

HA doesn't fly LAX-LAS anymore. Depending on the day of the week, the HNL-LAS flight is either nonstop or flies HNL-ONT-LAS.
