The next generation Baggage X-Ray equipment is supposed to be integrated into the baggage belts going into the bag room. This is supposed to consoldate the operation and save space in the terminal for more people to complain about the checkpoint lines.
Seriously though, with the new program that is trying get off the ground with background checks to help alleviate the checkpoint waiting times. Screening bags should have been started after Pan Am 103 anyways. This proceedure is going to be permanent.
As far as Tom Ridge goes, I think the government has made huge strides in protecting the public. Too bad that they are a long way from getting the job done.
