777 Ever In An Accident?

Tue Jan 13, 2004 5:35 am

Has a 777 of any type ever been in any sort of crash/accident???? This a/c has been in the air for 8 or 9 years now and I cant think of one!!!

Engine trouble or an over-shot runway doesn't count!?!

The A340 has also never had a fatal accident, but unlike the 777, it has been written off before.

Yes, knock on wood. Hopefully the 777 safety record will remain intact.

I can'y recall exact date, sometime in 2001.

emirates 773 had catastrophic engine (#1 eng) failure during pwr transients on takeoff roll from Melbourne YMML.

i remember seeing this on the news with amatuer video footage from a passenger who was filming @ the time.
blade from the front fan let go, is what the news coverage had. could've been propoganda though.

That's correct, AFAIK, the A340 write-offs were due to a ground fire caused by wrong maintenance procedures (Air France) and terrorist attacks in Srilanka (Srilankan/AirLanka). However, the A330 was involved in an accident during its early days (pilot error during low-pass at air show).

No hull losses for the 777 so far, touch wood. It really is a fantastic 21st century jetliner in all aspects. But it takes just one error/terrorist attack/mechanical failure and that record would be broken.

Didn't that A330 crash happen during a test flight, before certification? That's what I've read on this forum and on the internet, and I dare to say I'm quite certain that I would remember having heard of an A330 full of passengers crashing.

I don't even want to think about the beautiful 777 in an incident. Long live the 777.

Would Love to see it in old DL Widget Livery.

I believe your thinking about the A320 accident. The A330 crashed during a test flight, but that's all I know about it.

The 777 has had a great safety record and has had a few close calls as far as hull losses go (BA 777 at DEN fueling fire comes to mind) and the A340 has had the same great safety record in the flying stage with a few ground hull losses due to circumstances beyond their control (Air France "fire" and the Sri Lanka "fired upon").
The A330 that has been talked about involved cn 042. F-WWKH was in basic Thai colors, flying what I believe was a single engine go-around test when it went down June 30, 1994 in Toulouse prior to certification.

That was an A320. The A330 crashed during a test flight in Toulouse.

Algoes,

No A330 has ever crashed during a scheduled flight. There were incidents but none were fatal except the one that happened during certification flight.

I do remember B772s involved in various incidents but no fatal accidents, albeit with a few close calls. I remember there was a TG B772 in flight fuel leak and had to do an emergency landing at DAD. There were reports of fuel substance on the runway (I am not sure about this but that was what I heard).

China Airlines was pretty damn close to losing an A340 with that stunt on the taxiway in ANC last year.

Hopefully both aircraft will have long, safe lifespans.

A 330 did make a dead stick landing in the Azores. This was an Air Transit Flight from Toronto to Lisbon.
