Question For Pilots

When Pilots communicate with ground (tower, approach, center, etc) and a joke is said or a snappy comeback, what does it mean when immediately after, although no other pilot responds a bunch of double-clicks on the mikes are heard ?

Its a universal way to say " I copy" without tying up the Freq. There should only be 1 set of double clicks.

Normally the clicks may come after not very important information such as winds or a traffic advisory, for instance the pilot is cleared onto the runway but told to "position and hold", he would readback "position and hold", if while he/she is doing this, the tower comes on and says "winds are 230 at 5kts" it is then that the pilot could click twice, stating that he/she has heard the information... Pilots do not normally, or should i say shouldn't reply to clearances with clicks. That basically means if a pilot is cleared for take-off, taxi, land, go-around etc. he/she would normally read back verbally.

Yes,

If the frequency is busy, we double click the mike to let the controller know we've copied the instruction or advice.

Never do double clicks take the place of clearance read backs. If I give a clearance then a read back is required. But like you said rams, with wind direction and things like that a double click is ok!

Thanks a lot for your answers. Everyday you learn something knew. As far as I'm concerned, I've got what I wanted from the post, so someone from the crew can close it if they want.

What does it mean when a pilot calls up approach and says Delta XXX at FL180 with hotel/juliet?

That would be the current ATIS (Automated terminal information system, which gives winds, and various other info). Every time it is updated, a new letter is assigned, and pronounced using the aviation alphabet.

By saying "with romeo" the pilot tells which ATIS he has heard.

The reason for the pilot to say that, ie 'Delta XXX at FL180 with hotel/juliet' is to save the ATC time by not having to tell each pilot which ATIS is current. Only if the the ATIS has changed will the ATC then tell the pilot 'ATIS is Kilo' etc.

Its the controllers job to make sure the pilot has the current ATIS for the arriving airport. If there is an accident on landing, that is one of the first things that they will look for upon reviewing the tapes. ATIS Is changed usually anywhere from 50past to right on the hour. ATC will announce the new code, any big changes in the weather from the past recording, and the current altimeter at the least, Some will just read the whole ATIS to cover their butts.
