PW-powered 767-400ER Ever Going To Fly?

Thu Jan 15, 2004 2:39 pm

As many of you know, Delta and Continental are the only two operators of the 767-400ER, and both operate GE-powered versions. Who thinks the 767-400ER even has a slight chance of selection by many airlines in the future? I certainly would like more people to operate, as the PW-powered 764s have yet to fly. The PW engine barely got off the ground with 757-300, as Northwest is the only operator of the PW-powered type. It has been on the market for four years and only racked up orders from only the two airlines mentioned above...I think. Will the international market ever shift so that more airlines feel the need to operate a 764ER fleet? Obviously, this would give me great satisfaction since it would allow the PW-powered 764ER to get off the ground.

Excuse, me...I meant, do you suppose the market will shift so that more airlines feel a greater need for the 764ERs...didn't mean to sound like I wanted a fortune told.

I don't see a reason why a PW4062 powered 764ER is infeasible, but I am not expecting anyone to order the 764ER moving forward.

Fitting the 767-400ER with the PW4062 is pretty much a dead issue now.

The 764ER is a fine aircraft but the A332 can do more of what the airlines want. Pretty much the only things that 764 has over the A332 is that is has better short range performance and that it can fit into L1011/DC10 gates.

The only order on the horizon for the 767-400ER is from the USAF, the first E-10A should begin production in mid Feb. And follow up orders by year end. If the USAF can find the money the E-10A order will top out at 12 aircraft.

(For those who don't know about the E-10A, It's a replacement for the E-8 J-STARS)

Also, Boeing is more likely to push the 7E7 as well now

The 764 had its (very brief) time, and now it's done. It was a nice looking plane, and I would have liked to see more of them, but it just didn't compete with the 332, and it certainly doesn't compete with the 7E7.

The 764 is in a weird spot as an aircraft. It is great for shorter routes, better than the 332 would be on shorter routes. But on transocean flying the 332s extra containers bring in a lot of revenue.

I can see DL maybe picking up more 764s, if they were in better financal shape. But these are hard times. IF it was a pre 9-11 economy, we'd be seeing a LOT of 764s!

that 764 has over the A332 is that is has better short range performance and that it can fit into L1011/DC10 gates.

they also fit in to gates that used to hold SMALLER planes than the L10 believe it or not
