Shorest Widebody Route

Mon Jan 17, 2000 5:06 am

By widebody I mean like all the widebodies except the 767, althought I wouldn't mind knowing that route either. I know TAP has a LIS-OPO A340 service and Avensa has a LIS-OPO DC-10 service. that is 107 miles. Also, the shortest 767 I think is ORD-IND. Any others that you know of?

While WestPac was still in business, United was running a DC-10 COS-DEN against them...

SQ opperates Sin-Kuala Lumpur with A310-300, and the flight time is about 35-40 min (in air, not with taxing on the ground).

Shortest Widebody Service

Mon Jan 17, 2000 5:13 am

I really don't know but, back in the 80's Pan Am operated a 747-100 from LAX to San Francisco, this of course was just a short leg of a more extensive route.

Hawaiian Airlines operates a DC-10 from LAX - Las Vegas daily.

Althought Avensa operates the Lisbon - Oporto service, I don't think that passengers are allowed to fly between those two points.

UA ORD-IND

Mon Jan 17, 2000 5:15 am

The 767 on the route operates only in the busy summer months to bring feed into UA's ORD-Europe flights.

I have recently been on several widebody Turkish Airlines flights (some kind of an airbus) between Ankara and Istanbul (About a 50 minute flight). The flights are always packed too.

The shortest I can think of is Delta's L1011 on the HNL-OGG route. 101mi.

Swissair uses the Md-11 on the FRA-ZRH route. It must be about 100 miles. They also used the 747 on the BSL-ZRH domestic route. This cant be more than 60 miles.

Actually...

Mon Jan 17, 2000 6:02 am

The FRA-ZRH route is 178 miles long and is operated by a Swissair A330. The ZRH-BSL route is 49 miles long and the largest aircraft currently flying on that route is a MD-80.

They used the md-11 last summer. I've flown the 747 from BSL to ZRH myself. But this was a long time ago!
Excuse me i'm not familiar with miles. How many kilometers are one mile?

Swissair have not got any Md 80's anymore. They fly Gna-Bsl once a week on a 330 200. I think it is on Wednesday

767 Shortest

Mon Jan 17, 2000 6:25 am

The shortest 767 route may well be the Delta Air Lines New York JFK - Philadelphia service DL139, continuing service in from Manchester, UK, altho on a different plane..... the plane goes from JFK - PHL and then back to JFK.....

Maybe the shortest 767 route....

Do you know if domestic customers flying JFK-PHL are allowed to board that 763 in JFK, or are only MAN-PHL passengers entitled to a 763 by themselves? I assume others are allowed to board if there is a change of plane.

I flew on an Air Canada 747-200 Toronto-Montreal back in 1998. It was full, with about 400 pax onboard. The flight was 45 minutes long. Took longer to board the plane, than the duration of the flight. Can you believe they served us a snack as well?

Now Air Canada flies the 762 and 763 on that route. Sometimes an A333 and A343 are used during certain times of the year. Air Canada's A333 from Ottawa to Montreal continues to Heathrow, so I don't know if domestic passengers are allowed on it.

YYJ to YVR - 24 miles. 7 minutes. A330-200. Not a route that is sold, but a segment of a trans-Pacific route.

One old route from the late 80's:
United 747SP SFO-LAX (which then operated the LAX-SYD flight).

Last March during the horrible "fog storm" that shut down OAK, SFO, and SJC for a few days, UA operated some DC-10's on the United Shuttle routes, mainly to LAX.

I believe the Canada 3000 YVR-YYJ flight is operated by a A330 (continuing on to HNL). If so, it has to be the shortest! 39mi!

In '96 I did my first flight in seat 1A on board a Garuda 742 from Jakarta to Denpasar (Bali). The flight was 45 minutes and virtually empty. I think this might be a contender for a regularly scheduled direct widebody flight (no onward connections).

It is a continuation of their LGW-BWI service, usually almost no pax. I am not sure what the flight # is. Check the LGW-BWI part.

Also, I found that

Air Jamaica A340-300 MBJ-Kingston, 86 miles.

Domestic flights in thailand are operated by 777s and 747s.

I've flown a 747-400 from phuket to bangkok. This flight took 40 minutes. This was the shortest 747 flight i remember.

KLM had Amsterdam-Dhahran-Bahrain service with the 767. The latter of the legs was something like 15 minutes. I think the Dhahran flight now continues to Doha and the Bahrain flight stops in Kuwait.
Ask why..

At Gulf Air we regularly use A340/A330/B767-300 on Bahrein/Doha, an 80nm sector or even in place of the A320 on the Bahrein/Dahran hop which if given the right runway combination by ATC crews level off at 3/4000 feet and in summer days don't retract the gear as It would not have time to cool off!

Did we land or were we shot down?

Japan Airlines operates a number of short-haul widebody routes in Japan. Two I can think of are:

NRT-TOY 170 miles via a 767
NRT-NGO 181 miles via a 747

Does anybody here now what specific routes the JAL 747SRs are flown on?

Thanks to Fly15 for correcting the distance between YYJ and YVR. In nautical miles it is 35 (39.5 statute).

I was just guessing when I said 24. Sorry. But the 7 minutes was accurate (at least on one flight - wheels up to wheels down)!

Hello,

Air France operates flights :
EZE-MVD on a regular basis with a 777-200ER.
It has about 25 minites of flight.

In summer they operate, for example
CDG-NCE (Nice) or ORY-NCE with a 747-300

Routes such as :
CDG-BOD (Bordeaux)
CDG-LHR
CDG-FRA
CDG-MRS (Marseille)
have already been operated revenue by A340-300.

CDG-BES (Brest)
with a 777-200ER equipement.

BA operates a 777 or a 747-400 from LHR to CDG from time to time.

Best regards,
Alain Mengus

Swissair is operating six weekly flights between Basel and Newark. Once a week the flight goes on from Basel to Zurich as SR119 with an A330-223. The timetable shows 30 minutes for the flight. The real flight time is about 13 minutes.
The distance between Basel and Zurich is about 80km !

ATTN: RENO_AIR and Jayhawk.

One mile is NOT equal to 0.6km as jayhawk said.
1 MILE = 1.6KM

So 1000 miles are approx equal to 1600km.

UA's 767-300 IND-ORD

Tue Jan 18, 2000 6:05 am

I've been on that 767-300/ER flight 4 times in the last year. One time I went to ORD, just to get away from home, and purposely booked the 767 flight both ways; and when we went to SEA, we got on connecting flights with the 767 to ORD. It's always sold-out, it should be year-round service; although it's only seasonal (MAY-OCT)! The outbound (FL#561?) continued on to Sao Paulo, Brazil; and the incoming flight came in from Dusseldorf, Germany as FL#1590, then continued on to Indianapolis.

It's Delta

Tue Jan 18, 2000 12:50 pm

I think Delta's might be a bit shorter...a few months ago, and only for a few months, Delta's DL489 from Nashville (BNA) to ATL was operated by a 767-200. Total flying time: 32 minutes. I flew on that flight twice. (It's now a B757 now.)
