Airports To Allow Two Tries At Detectors

Fri Jan 16, 2004 5:35 am

Gee... someone is trying for a little efficiency over paranoia?

The Transportation Security Administration (search) is giving people who set off metal detectors on their first pass through the metal detectors a second chance, after they've removed the coins or keys they think caused the alarm.

It makes sense to allow another attempt if they set off the buzzer with their belts, shoes, watches, etc.

That is pretty normal in many countries. You forgot to take out car key or whatever - so you take it out and go thru again. Saves much time spent on manual screening.

Just remove all of your metal objects to begin with. If your belt, shoes, or watch are metal, take them off. I've never had any problem on the first try by simply removing those items.

"Fewer air travelers will have to take off their shoes and get their carry-on bags searched at security checkpoints under a new screening policy at airports around the country."

that means less time per person, which means faster lines, which means people wont bitch about it so much because with a secondary search,it will add about 3 min to how long it takes to go through security. It took me half an hour at FCO to get through security. The room was overflowing with people even though there must have been 15 or 20 lines for metal detectors.

This makes a lot of sense. I have gone throughout the dictators many times and forgot a watch or coins and it’s a hassle being searched manually. The lines will be shorter and screening will be better because they don't have to screen every fifth person. (Just using that number as an example)

My wife forgets which shoes do and don't set off the metal detectors, so this is a good idea, especially since she usually carries our baby while I struggle with the stroller.
