Longest Walk To Customs?

Fri Jan 16, 2004 2:13 pm

I was just wondering, what is the longest walk from a gate to customs at any airport in the world? I know that at YUL connecting internationaly on Air Canada the walk was pretty long.

Cheers,

Heathrow has got to be somewhere on this list...T3, maybe? I've used that last gate for AA flights, and boy is it a hike.

I'd say that, depending on the gate, ATL has a rather painstaking walk to customs from any type of transatlantic flight, which usually require the last gates to accommodate the larger aircraft. Not to mention the customs baggage area is larger than most airports I've seen!

Of course, on a busy day, CDG is horrible. The walk isn't too terribly bad, but with ignorant customs agents, the line quickly fills beyond the perimeter of the area itself.

Cheers!

The tunnel from TBIT to T4 at LAX makes for a rather long journey, and there's no toilets from the time you get off the plane until you finally exit customs.

People who fly into Terminal 5 at ORD complain if the plane parks at Gates M1, M2, M20 or M21. Customs is between M10 and M12.

It seemed like the walk from the end of the trans-border concourse at YYC to Customs was a hike. Part of it is that one has to go up a level after deplaning, walk the length of the concourse, then go down two levels to get to Customs.

Depending on where you arrive at DFW, the walk can be a bit of a hike. If you come in at some gates, say in the A25-A30 range, you have to trek all the way down to the A5 area for the customs hall. Not too bad, but it can feel like a hike after a 10-hour flight from FRA. I've never gone through customs at Terminal B, but I've heard that sucks as well. Of course, about a year from now those days will be gone -- the new International Terminal D will be up and running -- can't wait!

Flying Air Canada Jazz from Seattle to YVR, and then walking from the gate all the way through most of the airport to customs seems like an endless trek through a very clean glass-walled airport.

Sometimes, portions of Tokyo Narita Terminal 2 seem to never end...

SYD is pretty bad, and the US Airways transborder gates at YUL took a good 15 minutes to get to immigration...

I would give another vote to Atlanta Hartsfield Int'l. And would add to the list Miami Int'l Airport. At least from the end of Terminal A the walk seems endless.

I think LHR terminal 3 has a pretty long way to go. Specially if your plane is on gate twenty something..
At Brussels airport you can have a lot of calories burned if you are at the edge of the terminal..
Also Amsterdam Schipoll, if you're flying with Easyjet, it can get difficult to get to the jet..whatever!!

How about the walk from The DL gates at Gatwick North Terminal to Customs and Immigration? This is the one time when I enjoy being bussed to the terminal from a remote stand!

American Eagle at SJU is quite a hike. First you got to take the bus and then hike the entire length of AA's pier and when I did it, all the people-movers were broken or being installed. Quite an unpleasant long walk.

My vote goes to Gatwick if you come in on Delta. My god. I seems like a 2 mile walk at 7AM after an overnight flight.

I don't know if it's the longest in the world, but it beats the longest I've ever had by a good distance.

ATL is pretty long. The immigration procedure is a pain in the ass too. Once you go through all that, you have to re-check your bags to the terminal before picking them up off the belt one more time. Anyone who has had ATL as their final destination coming from abroad knows what I mean. European arrivals are pretty bad too- all come at once and the immigration area is a zoo.

The new international terminal thats in the airport master plan will solve that. I wonder which politician will get the nod for the namesake of said terminal....

When you arrive at IAD early in the morning, and the immigration facilities at councourse C are not open, there is a very long walk around concourse C to get to the mobile lounges, then a long wait until the lounge is full, a ride to the main terminal, and only then you get to immigration. It is a long walk, a long wait, then a long ride. Only then you get to stand in line...

Must be the "A" gates at MIA ... quite so big but nice view... BA and AF 747's together, most of Latinamerican airlines and so.

I am not sure if it's the A gates at MIA, but wherever IB flies into MIA...that took a really long time to get to the customs area.

Definitly LHR T3. When I came in on UA from ORD, it was about a 20-30 minute hike to Customs.

DXB would be on top of my list.

It takes forever to get from the new terminal to get to the tunnel and then the old terminal building...

I have to say Dubai. The walk is about 15 mins and there are even golf carts with drivers waiting for part of the journey. Very civilised.

The walk in Tampa isn't long but it is somewhat crazy. There is only one gate in terminal F that you come off the jetway and under the floor with the gate and they snake you around the bowels of the airport down to customs.

Last time I used it I was coming back from LGW. It was nice to be one of the few that didn't have to go the "non-american" line or whatever its called.

Another vote for Narita T2... walking from gate 45 (NW's old terminal) to the customs point had to take 20+ minutes, and covered a long, long ways.

I vote for this also. AC Jazz, Horizon and UA Express all use that concourse. Its a pretty long walk.

In TPA there are many more gates that have Customs access, BA just uses the same one. I believe out of the 15 gates in Airside F 6 have access to Customs. I could be wrong, but I know there is more then one.

MIA is quite a walk depending on what concourse your aircraft parks at....
SJU is a bit of a hike as well, especially when using the Eagle..

MIA?
I just flew in on Lufthansa and landed at the 2nd furthest gate.

This seriously is not a long walk compared to those I have done in LHR, and ATL. Those are pretty bad!
