What Will Happen To NW's DC9's

Fri Jan 16, 2004 10:18 pm

We all know that the DC9's will probably be the longest serving aircraft EVER for a single airline. But what we may not know is what it will be replaced if, if replaced at all. AA is dismissing its F100, UA is dismissing its 762s. So what exactly will happen to the DC9's?
My predictions:
DC9 -31/2 will be replaced by A318s (NW could go domestic and regionally Airbus), Embraer 190s???, hopefully 717's.
DC9-50/1 will be replaced by A319s, A320s.(Not with Boeing a/c coz of NW's commitment to its present A319,A320 fleet)

These predictions are meant for this decade!! But we'll probably not be surprised to see DC-9's still in operation in 2010
Long Live the DC-9

I guess NWA's DC-9s will still fly when A320s, A319s, B757s and B747s are long gone...  Wink/being sarcastic

NWA, keep the 9ers or take the 717s...but please no A318s nor terrible CRJ900 nor jungle jets!!!  Angry

you catch on quick you beat me to it! my thoughts exact!! I love NW but comeon give the DC9s a break already. NWA has publically announced the DC9's expectance plenty of times, goto thier site read through the press releases. If you still have questions after the mass reading ask them via thier site might take a bit but rest assured they will answer, Ive asked plenty they always help! But please leave it off A.net we are all tired of this topic here!!!

Yeah its been probably discussed 150 times just during the time you been here. This topic is discussed nearly daily. We could be on the subject on Northwest adding a new route or something and the DC-9 replacement question comes up.

RE: What Will Happen To NW's DC9's

It will be another 10 years before NWA looks at retiring its 9s. It spent millions in the mid-90s to refurbish the fleet rather than buy new planes. I hope that NWA will not go even more Airbus with the A318. But, it all depends on when the airline begins a gradual retirement of the fleet, whether it wants to use a similar type (717), either 200 or a possible extended version, or if it intends to expand the A320. The A320 was a 727 replacement, I think, so the carrier will likely look to another smaller type to replace its 9s. It all depends on what is available in the future. Boeing may cut the 717, Airbus may cut the A318- if sales do not improve, so whatever is available will determine their replacement. In the meantime, enjoy flying on those old, yet sturdy vintage jets. Keep in mind that Northwest emphatically rejects such marketing cliches as "new car smell," "state of the art." They still fly 747-200s which date back to the early 70s and many are used, old DC-10-30s that it bought from Swissair when SA switched to the MD-11, etc. so do not expect NWA to break its neck rushing to buy new planes. They love to get every last bit of flight out of every plane, and they base their decision to buy/not buy on many factors, the least of which is age. I started flying in '67, and many of its 9s were cruising the skies back then. Their philosophy is unique, but also understand that NWA is not teeter-tottering on a mountain of debt, to the extent of other carriers. CO has a fleet of new, new planes, a key marketing strategy, but CO is highly indebted.

Us oldtimers here know the topic has been beaten to death, but to the newest members here...it's still a fresh subject. IMO, the DC-9 will be replaced what NW already has...the Airbus 319/320. I can't see NW adding another airframe type to replace the -9. The airline industry as a whole is still struggling just to do business one more day. I can't understand why should any carrier be shopping for new airplanes if they can't pay for them. This includes Northwest. The DC-9 fleet is paid for, well maintained & still dependable. Just my two cents worth. Regards.

Thank you Dtwclipper! For my 2 cents, I would love it if they would pick up the 717; it's such a sexy looking airplane. I know that is not the way to make a purchase decision, but it's reason enough for me. I flew on a Hawaiian 717 to Hilo and it was really comfortable. (Sorry to the flight attendant who had to clean my spilled coffee off the seat next to me)

Udo, sorry to correct You, but question is totally irrelevant! It's Lufthansa's PTV that are to be discussed here at a.net... Laugh out loud

I was about to post this, but You were faster...

But then, as we're already talking about it, when will Lufthansa install PTV in the new 346? And which bird will be next then?

NW will retire the last DC-9-10s this year.

NW will not look into replacing these a/c until the end of this decade.

NW DC-9s are economical, and it would be pointless to replace them at this point. The only people who know that they are as old as they are airline junkies. And most of us DONT care about the age.

Discounting the DC-9, NW has the youngest domestic fleet after CO of the majors.

The New American is arriving.

Seriously. . .the NWA DC-9 threads are common. . .but most of us always seem to read them every time they come up. I know I do! I read them because I know there will be some wise cracks, some other humor, and always some pride concerning these ole' gals. . .especially from the NWA fans and employees.

And to all the newer A.net users: don't worry. . .we all learn the funtions of the site over time. . .no big deal.

DIA is right. I always find myself reading this type of thread regarding the NW DC-9s.

I don't want anyone to take offence to this but one thing is for sure.

With every post asking when NW will retire these great planes we come closer to the day the day NW will retire them.  Smile

And who knows, the 717 may not be in production when that time comes around. That is a sad thought isn't it.

Hey Nudelhirsch, you are correct! I mixed something up. Of course I wanted to ask about PTVs in LH's A346.

Hm, I think LH will finally install PTVs in their A346 by summer 2012. By that time Richard Branson will have taken majority of Lufthansa and therefore intends to start a service offensive. Right on time the planes will then arrive for their second D-check and get the new interior.
In the same turn LH's B747-400 will then be retired and passed onwards to NWA as a DC-9 replacement.  Nuts

And now you want to know where I got the info from, right?  Laugh out loud

Whether it is an old, worn out topic or not, NWA's DC-9s inspire passion for the readers and posters of this forum. You either like them or hate them, I guess, and I am sure for those of you who have flown on them, you have experienced the good and the bad. Personally, I think NWA's strategy is worth considering, and I say this as a UA pilot. Now, I have not examined NWA's financial statements, but I know from observation, that the carrier's retirements have been gradual, and that NWA was not in the same predicament of having to re-negotiate leases and terms on its aircraft or with the need of parking dozens of them in the deserts following 9/11. The DC-10-40 and 727 retirements were planned and initiated well in advance of 9/11 and were concluded almost a year after 9/11. NWA learned from its financial mishaps during the mid 90s and has been prudent and responsible in their fleet upgrades. As far as those DC-9s are concerned, NWA has never in my knowledge had a fatal incident with the aircraft, excepting NW 255 (might have been an MD-80) when the pilots forgot to configure the flaps, and it certainly has had no such issues since then. Those old birds are good for the skies, and speculations about replacements are moot until the airline decides to retire the bird- which won't be for another 10 years, I am sure.

Better stock up the guards at Mojave, before NW pilots go there to "get" some more DC9s...

Udo, I have an information, stating, that Lufthansa will have a 346 configured in a one-class seating, fitting 850 pax into coach...heard about that too?

And they will, as their original IFE, have one first class seat in the cabin, and every pax may sit there for 10 seconds...

And if You are a FF and ahve more than 500,000 miles with LH, You may upgrade to a complete minute sitting in this throne...

That's the point when SRB takes over and brings a LH380 with only first class seats, a pool, tennis court, and a real river in the upper deck where You can make a river cruise...

Sorry, what was the topic?

Udo, Your concerns are absolutely right! Airbus with it's crazy modern stuff and these WIN98-powered planes...that's teeeerrrrrible...
imagine this:

Tower: "Airbus320...press Start button and restart for landing"
Airbus320: "Roger tower...restarting system now for landing..."
Airbus320: "Tower, we got a problem, Dr. Watson just took over the plane..."
Tower: "Roger Airbus, the reset-button is located under Your seat. Press and hold for 5 seconds"
Airbus320: "Roger Tower...wait...Scandisc? Tower, is Scandisc some new ILS suff?"
Tower: "Ohh shit, Airbus..., better start operating system in safe mode. Do You have the ILS-driver installed?"

ok, now I'm fighting to get a grip on myself...

I get such a kick out of the people who sit and complain about the number of posts per week (day, month, etc...) that is make on this topic. Did it ever occur to you that some people may post it ONLY to get a rise out of you?!?!? Reading the responses in these threads are always a good laugh.

Get this.. On my recent trip to home to LAN, I was speaking with the FO of my flight from DTW to LAN and I asked her "What do you think of the new livery?" She said "It's nice, but the idiots but the direction triangle in the compass logo in the North East on my side of the airplane!!". I didn't realize it was that important??

When the DC-9s are gone we will move on to asking about the 10s.. then the 742s.. by that point we will then want to know when the scarebusses will start getting phased out for something new.

There is always why no 717s for NW, AA, ETC

NW DC-9's: Big fuel-to-noise converters.. But great planes anyway  Smile

NW would be smart to do some deciding, as I cannot see the 717 program lasting 10 years. IF NW decides on the 717 (eventually) hopefully they'd do so before the program is terminated..

I think it all comes down to this: NW will have to start retiring their DC-9's starting in 2006 because the plane will not comply with ICAO Stage IV standards for jet engine noise emissions.

Expect NW to split the replacement fleet between more A319's for mainline operations and more CRJ700's for Mesaba (Northwest AirLink). There's always a chance NW might even look at buying the Embraer 190/195 series as true DC-9 replacements if the price is right.  Smile

Chris,
I agree... NWA might be able to save the 717 program with an order that will undoubtedly be the biggest order the program would see... But, its highly unlikely they will choose anything other than the 'bus to replace the nines.

Being a newbie to a.net, and since it seems to be a rite of passage as some have claimed, I'll save a new topic and just tack it on to this one:

So, does anybody have any idea when NW will retire their DC9s??

Here's an idea... Start a new airline, buy up all the DC9's you can get your hands on... NW's, FL's that haven't yet been scrapped, all of them, and call your airline AirNine...

(these are the thoughts that sleep deprivation cause...)

While I'm at it, I'll ask a couple other newbie questions:

Have y'all heard US Airways might be in trouble?

and can't forget this one:
Airbus or Boeing? Who's better?

Maiznblu 757,

Yeah, but the photos I posted were all photos of N776NC. There aren't any NCA or NCA/ Republic hybrid photos of N776NC from what I could find......

A while back when NWA had refurbished the interiors of the Diesel 9, I remember hearing another passenger comment, "what a nice new plane!"

Right,
I didnt read your post that well.. I didnt realize they were all N776NC. Anyhow most NWA DC9-50's began service with NC they still serve some of the same routes they served when Herman was on the tail.

I am new to this topic too LOL! Aah, the memories. I'm not very sentimental about DC-9s, but the -10s are so rare and stuff & this just hits home. One fine day in Dec. 1996, I saw my first identified NW DC-9-10, on the SAME DAY as a DC-8 (prob. Emery). And they have other models too - really an airline for the DC-9/M80. Aaaaah.....

What this forum really needs is an FAQ. NWA DC-9s should be question #1. Question #2 should be about DL's livery changes.

If we don't get some sort of FAQ, this question will be asked at least 3 times a week for the rest of our stinkin' lives. And all we do is end up piling on the poor SOB who asks it.

Just a thought.

BTW, does anyone know when the NWA DC-9s will be retired?
