2 Planes Collide Over Florida

Sun Jan 18, 2004 8:32 am

One plane crash landed and a second managed to land safely after they collided on the final approach to Clearwater Airpark in Florida on Saturday, an airport authority spokesman said.

"The two planes touched on the downwind side (of the airpark)," operations manager Gordon Wills said. "One was able to land, but the other went down."

Video from the scene showed one of the small planes upside down in some trees.

The forward section and wings of the single-engine Cessna plane was severely damaged.

The other plane, a twin-engine Piper, was parked on the tarmac with police tape around it. It appeared to have damage on the right wingtip.

Now that's a near miss, as in they nearly missed but not quite!!  Innocent

wow! i have been in a VERY close call while i was in my C172 and came very close to hitting a Continental ERJ-145 at night time. It would have been very bad, but not my fault.....

Ouch, this year really isn't starting out as a good one for aviation...

Jordan, that's got to be scary - but the distinction of it not being your fault probably wouldn't have helped you that much if it hadn't just been very close... good for you that it was "only" very close...

We had a near a miss too once while flying in a small 4 seat twin engine a/c. We were flying TPA-CHS with my husband flying, his flight instructor and myself. Carlo (the flight instructor) and I noticed movement on our left at the same time and turned to look only to see a C-172 coming straight at us. All I remember seeing was the green belly of that 172 as he pulled his plane up and to his right to avoid hitting us! It happened so fast there wasn't time to say anything to my husband.
I just cant figure out how that guy was coming straight at us like that and didn't see us till he about hit us. How is that possible? We were above a layer of clouds and visibility was fine at the time. We were going North, he was going East. How do you not see another a/c right infront of you?

well sometimes its easier than you think.... you are so concentrated on the instruments that you don't even notice a big aircraft right in front of you. That is true skill of a pilot when he can multi task and do operations inside and outside of the cockpit

Oh so actually good news... my heart stood still seeing the topic header... A midair collision of big Delta or JetBlue aircraft or something was the last thing anyone wanted to hear about.... Maybe an alternative topic like "no injuries after small planes collide over Florida" would spare many nerve systems...
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Actually the local news here in TPA is reporting the pilot of the C-150 did die. The plane also crashed a mere 10 feet from a playground that was full of children at the time.
Loss of life, even one, is never good news.

The location of that crash was only about 1/2 mile from my house!
Not sure when it happened, but may have been at mall when it happened as didn't hear any commotion...one of CLW fire stations is on same road about halfway between it and me so response time was likely quick...sometimes when a major car wreck happens near me, the first thing I hear is all the sirens followed by the house vibrating as the med chopper lands at supermarket that I see bits of from liv rm window...

I had a pretty close call like that once I was flying in my Cessna 150 and I took off from Saline county airport in benton arkansas and I turned cross wind I than turned downwind after clearing my turn and than an Aircoupe buzzed right over my head he never made any Radio acknowledgements on his location and I asked him to advised and he finely did when he said Aircoupe Landing runway 35 saline county as soon as I landed I gave him a piece of my mind

About 17 years ago, I was flying on Piper Cub in the front seat I was supposed to watch traffic 180 degrees above and below I could see everything because of wing blindspot above the plane. I was flying and all of sudden a small twin prop plane (Cessna 302 or something??) right above of my plane I'd say within like 50 feet at 10 o'clock passes right over us. My instructor pilot was pissed off! He was scared as hell of almost a midair collision! I wasn't able to see it at 10 o'clock because of the wing blind spot. I think I was hoping that the plane co-pilot might see at 2 o'clock traffic below of my plane. He thinks he saw us to avoid a hit or something. It was scary! My Piper Cub doesn't have a radio equpiment. We have to fly at least 1,000 feet airspace below all the time.

I've had a near miss over the Puget Sound in Seattle. I don't think he ever saw us, but I could clearly read his N-Number.
Last year 1,944 New Yorkers saw something and said something.
