New Cathay Routes For 2005

Sun Jan 18, 2004 9:00 pm

Just caught this on PPRUNET . . .

Starting Spring 05
2 x week , HKG -SVO - MAN and HKG- MUC - MAN . A340 a/c.

So, three new routes (MUC, SVO and MAN) for 2005 . . . and possibly more to come. Not sure if it's 2 weekly for each route or one each, but I would think it's probably 2 each, or 4 weekly into MAN.

Very welcome news and hope it works out for them.

Although I haven't seen the schedules, I would imagine the SVO/MAN sector would be a day flight, as it's not really practical to have an overnight HKG-SVO flight.

I'd prefer them to be offering non-stop MAN!

... and I'd prefer them to be offering a MUC-only flight... seems we're both only getting half of what we'd like...  Big grin

But it's good to hear that there'll be an alternative to LH from MUC to HKG - any idea what type of A340 will be used?

Frank

I'd assume a 343 because if they wanted to use a 346, they could just use a 777.

Finally Cathay made it to Russia:

The SVO MAN is similar to the flight JAL is offering SVO-FCO as flying to each destination separately would not generate enough pax.

Well, CX's 777s are for regional uses now, and those aircrafts are equipped with only a regional business class product.

I will assume the new flights to SVO and MAN and MUC will see Airbus A340-300 featuring the new business class product. I guess CX tends to use the 340s to explore new markets, so CX's choice of equipment comes as no surprise. Spring 05 seems so far away... I really hope CX can restall the MAN flights ASAP.

I think Cathay have plenty of room to expand their network. Currently CX is facing very strong competition in Asia, especially on major routes like HKG-NRT/SIN/BKK/TPE etc...

What I think is..Cathay will spot on more long haul flight that Dragonair cannot handle. In order to make the new flight become more profitable, flight with one-stop obviosuly a great start for CX. Extension of the current route is a great idea as well. I have a phantom list...

HKG - YYZ extension to YUL, using A346 instead of A343;
HKG - ORD - BOS (Many overseas student in ORD and BOS area, can operate seasonal flight in summer with a B777?)
HKG - AMS - MAN Resume

Personally I think SVO is not going to work well because currently two airlines are operating. Unless Cathay can continue the flight to Scandinavian from Moscow, otherwise quiet risky to land on SVO.

This is very good news, however I understood this would be a 777 route?

As for the A340's the big rumour is the A346's will go and I know 4 x A343 are going. If the new big order is for 10 x 777 then could it be a 777 later??

CX is expected to order a whole lot of planes soon so they have expansion in mind.

There are a lot of plans for expansion at the moment, with the lack of crews being the main obstacle.

Our 777s as the are cannot make it to Europe. The 773s would make it with higher thrust ratings, but then you pay much more in overflight charges and when that same 777 does a HKG-TPE flight, it eats into the profits a lot. Configuring two or three 777s to fly to Europe is not cost effective.

Perhaps order 777NGs? There have been some rumors about that, have you heard anything?

777NGs? Is that a new term, or something you just thought up?

newspaper reports are that we will order 9 aircraft by by the end of March with Airbus or Boeing competing. Rumours are that it will be either/or, and not both.

I think he means 777-300ERs.

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if the order was for the 777-300ER. CX is said to be disappointed with the 777-300ER and if Boeing can include in this deal the buyback of its 777-200s, then maybe a deal could be done.

In addition to the proposed new aircraft, it's still expected that CX will want to buy secondhand aircraft, i.e. BA 747-400s.

The second hand 744s is something seperate - mainly for freighters. I am hoping for 777-300ERs, which the company is very impressed with. Kaitak - where did you hear that CX was disappointed in them? CX likes them but they are pretty expensive. if they do buy them, the fact they have GE's doesn't matter too much, as we would get quite a few - again suggesting a 10 aircraft order making sense.

I found the post in PPRUNE.ORG, however the post i saw didn't mention HKG-SVO-MAN and HKG-MUC-MAN at all.

MUC will only be one of the freighter destination but nothing has been discussed for the passenger flight.

D'oh!

I meant to say "disappointed in the A340-600s" - sincere apologies! (My mistake, but it should have been evident from the context; why would they be buying aircraft they were disappointed in!)

The new routes will be pax services!

As for DUB, I agree with Ryanair 320, but I think we should get something before the end of this year. EK is said to be looking very closely at Ireland and with the right prodding and lobbying from on high, I think it can happen.

I think DUB should be attracting much more new airlines. Aer Rianta the monopoly operators will charge no fees or charges (for three years) to any airline offering a new route out of Dublin Cork or Shannon. Pretty good incentive but I'm shocked it hasn't attracted a lot more carriers.

CX773,

my source was the Professional Pilots rumour network: "Airports/Routes" page.

Sushka, it'll be an A340-300.
