Ryder-Why SHOULD UA fly to Gatwick? They have all of their flights into Heathrow, which is obviously London's primary airport...Gatwick is considered to be a secondary airport for London (which is why BD, CO, DL, NW, and US would love for Bermuda II to go the way of the dodo bird, so they could start flying transcons into LHR)

All of UA's hubs and gateways are Bermuda II LHR cities, except for DEN. It hardly justifies opening a base at LGW, the less desirable of the major London airports, for a DEN flight only.

Again, American is forced to fly to Gatwick on some of their routes (RDU, DFW, others I can't think of)...if they could fly those routes into Heathrow, Gatwick would be dumped as an AA outstation in about the time it takes to fire the Gatwick-specific employees...

AA operate LGW to RDU and DFW (I believe the STL flight has gone away). RDU is something of a rare bird, but DFW is AA's major hub and they couldn't get away with not serving London from it.

AA flies their DFW and RDU routes into LGW because they have to, per the terms of Bermuda II, not because they want to. All US carriers want access to LHR, but the current agreement looks like it will be around for a while....

There is a market for JFK LGW - currently unserved. Most Likely a DL or AA service!

I seriously doubt United would do well in Wales. The front cabins would probably be fairly empty on a transatlantic service from CWL.

Nobody would do well with a transatlantic flight into Wales  Big grin Except maybe CO with a 3-4 x weekly 757.

People forget, if LHR was opened up to US/UK transatlantics, Gatwick would be turned into Queen Elizabeth II's replacement for Buckingham Palace in about as long as it took for the renovations to be completed...no airline flies to Gatwick because they want to...airlines only fly to Gatwick because they are required to by the negotiated bilaterals...

I don't think United would do well anywhere. They are in bankruptcy after all. Gatwick is also more a leisure and tourist airport than Heathrow. I would guess United thinks there is no business in the leisure market and they are going after the higher yield business traveler. Flawed thinking is rampant at United. Just look at "Ted" and you can see what the brain surgeons over there come up with.

Otherway round Bmi330. Why do you think GLA has more charters and EDI more scheduled. EDI has a large percentage of business travellers complementing the leisure market.

so they could start flying transcons into LHR

Be sorta pointless for them to fly transcons into LHR...  Big grin

It hardly justifies opening a base at LGW, the less desirable of the major London airports, for a DEN flight only

And yet DEN's traffic allowed BA to waltz right in, activate a dormant clause, and switch it to LHR.... how's that for irony?  Laugh out loud
