IAH Superbowl Traffic

Tue Jan 20, 2004 2:57 am

First of all, GO PANTHERS!!!

I was curious to see what the airlines were doing to increase service to IAH for the Superbowl coming up. Well, so far I looked onto US Airways website for a flight from CLT to IAH. It looks like US Airways bumped up from A319's and 737-300's to A321's and 737-400's. This was most likely to happen no matter who was playing this year because CLT is a major hub for US Airways. Although now that the Panthers are headed to Houston it looks like those planes might not be big enough. I checked on usairways.com this morning and nearly every flight to and from IAH from CLT and connection flights from CLT are already sold out before and after Feb. 1st. The Superbowl is not for another two weeks. Maybe US Airways should mix in a 757, 767 or an A330 somewhere in the schedule.

I figure there will be some charter flights and increased service from Continental and US Airways around Superbowl weekend around the country to IAH. So what can they expect to see?

I would expect a flow to be put in place. With the general aviation FBO's to be very very busy.

This months CO inflight magizine is all about welcoming people to IAH and the super bowl. I would expect The IAH-BOS and IAH-CLT flights upgraded to 738s from 733s and baybe an aditional frequency to CLT and BOS. One must remember going out of IAH before the super bowl and flights going in afterward will be emptier as this is very much One way traffic.

By the way, if you're planning to arrive by private plane, the FAA has put out a Special Traffic Management Program NOTAM : http://www2.faa.gov/NTAP/NTAP03DEC25/SP03059.HTM

Contrary to what one may think, there is not a huge increase in traffic between the two Super Bowl bound cities and the city in which the Super Bowl is held. Most people who do travel to the Super Bowl from those cities arrive on charters, not airlines on full tour packages--there are not many people who just pack up and say 'Hell, I'm just going to book a flight to IAH for the Super Bowl!' A lot of the seats at the Super Bowl are given to NFL sponsors like Gilette, Motorola (who I am going to the Super Bowl compliments of  Big thumbs up ), and Nextel--there just aren't any seats availible to the general public. Really the only shot that the average fan in Boston or Charlotte will have in getting a seat would be from scalpers or from a tour package. That being said, traffic will increase from everywhere.

Don't expect US 767's or 330's...not only are there not enough to go around but i dont think there is that much demand...maybe 1 767 but i doubt it.

Yea; tickets for the Superbowl wouldn't generally be available to fans of the teams since they are all distributed way before anyone knows who is actually going to the Superbowl. Besides, there's only so many people you can cram into the stadium.

There will be more traffic coming into HOU (as opposed to IAH) with charters, bizjets, etc. since it's closer to Reliant Stadium and surrounding hotels than IAH...
