Flying On Friday The 13th

Tue Jan 20, 2004 5:04 am

I don't regard myself as a superstitious person at all. I'll be flying EDI-STN on Friday the 13th Feb. I think its great, I can't wait.
Who else is flying on Friday the 13th and to where?
Does it bother you at all?
I'm not trying to start an argument here ok about being superstitious!

I have inlaws flying from MSP-IAH that day. And no it doesn't bother me. I would fly that day, sit in row 13 and depart out of gate 13 if I had to.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Whenever I have to fly, I will try to avoid the 13th of the month especially if it is friday. I aslo dont like to sit in seat 13. No speacial reason, just number 13 is not my lucky number.

What major accidents (if any) have happened on Friday, the 13th? Is there any historical reason why the 13th is a bad day for aviation?

Superstitions about the number 13 have nothing to do with aviation. It's just believed by some people as an unluckey number all together. BTW I'm not one of those people.

Interesting to see that the next Friday the 13th happens in February....with the following Monday being President's Day, that entire next week is perhaps the peak week of the Winter travel season. There will be thousands of sun-seekers departing various cold weather areas on that Friday....I wish I was one of them.  Smile

Although I'm not personally traveling on the 13th, my parents are flying from BOS to RSW that day. The funny thing is, I thought if anything it would be my mother who was upset... but it's my father (he's actually lost sleep over this from what my mother tells me) who insists they try to rebook for the 12th instead! Go figure.

I flying MCI-DAL (Southwest RR ticket) on that day. I have no problem with it. I used to travel so often that I know I've flown on Friday the 13th several times in the past.

What exactly is a discussion about the sense of flying on Friday 13th if it's not about being superstitious...?

One proposal that has been around for a very long time is to change the year to 13 months of exactly four weeks each. The calendar would then be the same month after month, year after year. It would still need a leap day from time to time to correct it, but it sure would be orderly.

What I like about the idea is that it would give us 13 Friday the 13th each year.

Hi "ScottishLaddie" & fellow "Airliners.net" members.

My flying experience on Friday 13th was in a February about 15 years or so ago. My flights were all the same day for business purposes:-

NCL-LGW, LGW-BRU, BRU-AMS, AMS-(MME)-NCL.

Everything went well and "yes" I enjoyed them all.

Happy flying to everyone.

I think it has been pretty well established that Friday the 13th has no real significance.

Police calls, emergency room admissions, fire calls, all these kind of things have been studied. There is no trend. They have also been studied for full moon having an effect. Again, none.

It has also been pretty well established that reality is no match for beliefs. It is kind of inconvenient for me, but I still don't put my hat on the bed when suiting up to go on a trip. I don't even know why I don't. Is it some superstition or just manners?

Actually, what I have heard is that Friday the 13th is actually generally SAFER than other days because people take more precautions due to the superstition.

Glad to know nobody here is really superstitious; after all, it's the freaking 21st century, not the Middle Ages. The only really bad thing associated with that date is the horrendously awful slasher movie series, perhaps the most shameless effort to make a buck ever. And just for the record, BLACK CATS crossing your path don't bring bad luck either, nor does walking under ladders (unless they fall on you).
