What Planes Heads Of States Fly.

Tue Jan 20, 2004 5:34 am

I thought it would be intersting to start a thread listing the type of planes that are used by heads of states for as many countries.

I can start with : Ariel Sharon prefers to charter EL AL planes over the old IAF 707.

Here in France it's a French Republic (armee de l'air / air force) A310-300 or A319 BJ or a Dassault Falcon.

Germany's Chancellor (as well as the president) is flown around in an A310... although, sometimes they also use Canadair Challengers (for example when Schröder flies home to HAJ it's, as far as I know, not always the A310).

I think this is the plane - notice that it doesn't say "Luftwaffe" but "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (it was decided that this would be more appropriate) on the side.

On long trips she flies KLM. I think she doesn't charter a whole plane but uses only the upper section of a 747. However I might be wrong on this.

Kind regards,

Jeroen

The South African President uses a BBJ, named Inkwazi (Zulu for African fish eagle).

The VIP fleet of the Spanish Air Force has 2 Airbus A310 and a few Dassault Falcon jets.
Those aircraft are often used by the King, the Prince or the Prime Minister.

ZE701 is also used by Tony Blair (UK PM).

The aircraft forms part of 32 Sqyadron (The Royal Squadron) that also operates BAe 125 Jets. I believe that there used to be two 146-100s until quite recently.

For L/H official trips QE2 and the PM both used to use a specially configured RAF VC10. I recall seeing on Airport a couple of years ago the aircraft at LHR to take Tony Blair abroad. When it came in empty its call sign was "Kitty". When it left with the PM on board it was "Kitty Hawk".

These days BA 777's tend to be used for official trips, though the Prince of Wales make frequent use of Privat Air 757s.

On a side note as QE2 is head of state for several countries. When she makes official trips to those countries other arrangements are made. Thus when she visited Australia last year a QF 744 was used, while on a trip to New Zealand a couple of years back a NZ 744 was used.

The Nigerian president has been trying for years to purchase an A340, thankfully the Senate has refused to allow the President do so. The plane still looks like its got a good number of years left in it.

PM of Canada has an A310 nicknamed the "Taj Mahal" for long haul, also a fleet of Challengers and Canadair Global Express for some routes where no need for A310 or where airfield too short...

The paint scheme on the A310 is not the nicest....the old 707s used for Govt VIP transport had much nice livery, as do the current Chellengers

Sheikh Zayed, the President of the United Arab Emirates and also the ruler of Abu Dhabi Emirate, has a beautiful 747SP, A6-ZSN, with RR engines.

Sheikh Maktoum of Dubai also has one (A6-SMM) but with PW engines, and the various UAE Emiri flights also have some 767s and an assortment of bizjets. Abu Dhabi Emiri flight also once had an A300 which was written off after a hard landing, not sure what became of it.

Rumour is that FAB will soon sign for a single Airbus ACJ and some Embraer 190 for the VIP fleet.

Would be really cool if someone had any INTERIOR shots of these govt. VIP airliners, aka our taxes at work. I can understand these would be difficult to get of current aircraft for security reasons and such (of course there are old Air Force Ones in museums), but sure would be interesting to see what's in there.

Jaspike

Do they declare a "purple airway" when royals fly? Heard that one time.

A couple of times during my career I've been made to delay or taxi off on some ramp to wait for Air Force One.

Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

Colombian president bought a B737, which will be here in our Country very soon (US$30 million plus USD$5 million in "little things") but until this baby arrives...He's using a Fokker (70 I guess) called "la Cafetera" (The coffee maker) and a B707 ...both very very old.
