SQ A345 Routes (other Than LAX, EWR)

Tue Jan 20, 2004 8:32 pm

Hey all, I was just wondering on what other routes will SQ deploy it's new A340-500s...I know that they currently operate them on the morning flight to Bali Denpasar from Singapore, but are there any other routes? Surely these aircraft wont only be limited to the non-stop LAX and EWR routes? I'm flying to LAX in June, but I would really want a chance to fly on them within the region before that!

They will fly some regional runs, can be Jakarta or Bali or Manila or Bangkok...check the schedule on the dates you fly.

SIA has only ordered five A345 aircraft and so they will need them for upkeeping their daily services to EWR and LAX. Several regional services during daylight times might be possible.
But if they want to add more long haul destinations, they will need more aircraft. Nonstops to SFO, YVR or YYZ might be a good idea in the future.
However, if they decide to get more ultra long haul aircraft, these are likely to be B777-200LRs. They will probably be used to replace the LeaderShips from 2006 or 2007.

Current revenue training flights include 3 daily SIN-CGK(SQ8520/8522/8526), 1 SIN-BKK(SQ510) and 1 SIN-DPS(SQ140). Additionally 2 SIN-KUL non revenue flights are also mounted. Plans to keep 1 SIN-CGK daily are afoot to maintain crew recency and training when SIN-LAX starts on Feb 3. The other destinations will probably end on Jan 31. SQ is currently running a S$199 special return fare for these destinations on the A345 Leadership till Jan 31.

Hope you enjoy the airplane, it's a real rocket when it takesoff at such light weights for these regional destinations. Really kicks you back into your seat.

They are having a promotion on BKK-SIN-BKK A345 flight.
Only USD 90 return per person (2 pax travelling together, at least) with miles.
It's a very cheap deal!!
Let's just blame it on yields.

I think SQ at YYZ is a pipe dream IMHO, but I hope it comes true!

SQ at YYZ? Not likely for now. Singapore and Canada have not had a formal bilaterial ever since the air services dispute of 1991-92, and the current flights to YVR are operated under a "license". Additional flights and additional destinations won't be mounted until this is resolved. For now, SIA appears happy to codeshare with AC. Personally, to me it is a miracle that the two airlines are even talking, much less cooperating.

I'd love to see some Dreamliners at LHR, although I don't think it's likely. More likely, however, is that SQ will watch the progress of its new Premium Economy cabin and apply that selectively to certain routes, of which LHR, SYD will be among the first.

Much as I love the 340 and I look forward to flying on the SQ aircraft, I do think that SQ will probably end up replacing them with 777LRs, if this aircraft can do the job.

Ex_SQer,
I had no idea there had been an air services dispute. Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Does that mean if/when it is ever resolved we could get service to YYZ? That would still be a longshot I think.  Smile

Yes, there was a dispute and a nasty one at that. I can email you an academic paper I did in 1999 on the topic if you like.

Read that SQ would fly ORD - SIN, but doubt that would happen.

Yeah, you can say that again because the route was never given the chance to be profitable. Launched in August 01 and taken off a few months after 9-11. I wish that SQ's presence could be increased in the US but their recent forays have been somewhat marred. Las Vegas was affected by the SARS-cutback and hence it is off the network too.  Sad

Now lets hope they do not curtail anymore destinations (LAX, SFO, EWR, JFK).

It's too prematured to say that the A345 will be replaced. I hope not and also the 773ER is a real possibility to replace the older 747-400s.

Should the 773ER be purchased... it's only a matter of time until the A345s get, as I've said in the past, "SQ-F.U.ed"  Big grin

Boeing's been fiending for that for about three years now

Why don't you just upload the paper into some webspace and provide a link here? Wouldn't that be easier than sending tens of emails?

Would you think SFO would be a city they may add non-stop, or will they maintain the 2 daily via ICN and HKG?

The A345 in its premium cabin config is targeted at destinations with high volume of business travellers. SFO unfortunately is not such a destination, neither is YVR. For these flights the bulk of passengers going through Singapore are from India and SQ earns heaps from its 5th freedom rights ex HKG and ICN. If SQ were to reconfigure its A345 Leadership to a smaller business class, executive economy and economy class then perhaps SFO and YVR will be served non-stop. Incidently, the B777-200ER that SQ operates I am told can do SIN-YVR-SIN non-stop.
