Is This Really A Boeing 747?

Tue Jan 20, 2004 11:38 pm

Is this really a Boeing 747? The leading edge slats don’t look like a B747 slats.
Is it possible that it is a B747-400ER and Boeing changed the LE slats?
What are the small “wings” on the engines?

Thanks

Long live the B747

Nope its not a 747, its not KLM and it isnt Schiphol either. I submitted a correction, but I think its impossible to fill in all the details to make it work!

Make your own minds up:

This is a KLM B744

This is a lufthansa A343, note it has them 'Wings' on the engines as you call them

Since when did CFM supply engines for the 747????
Also, those are petal reversers....
It's an A340.

As the "CFM" stickers look relatively new, IMHO this is an Airbus A340-300E.

I don´t know if it´s a 200 or a 300, but I´m 100% sure it´s an Airbus A340...definitely.

Definetly a A340.
Maybe China Southern Airlines???

The engines on 747s use cascade reversers, the slats are not the same as on a 747, and the winglet is definetly not the same as on a 747

Guessing that it is landing at an airport somewhere in China.

And looking at the background.. it seems like it's a Chinese airport...

Wow, that's my pic. Why there is another name? I took it landing in Guangzhou last week.

What happened?

By the way it is an AF A340-300.

Can anyone explain why my pic is under another name?

If you open it, you can clearly see that the copyright is under my name, Daniele saracco.

Any info?

Wow, I think someone here needs to give Daniele a good explanation here....

The photo says Copyright Daniele Saracco, but the 'Author' is incorrect on the table, it has to be identical. The airport should be Guangzhou, not Amsterdam. The airplane is an AF 343 as AZ just explained.

Perhaps it was overwritten by a file with a similiar name? What filename did you use to upload the picture?

Anyway, guys, no moderators around?
I hope they fix this fast, otherwise I will get mad on someone  Angry

We are still waiting for a good explanation and an excuse.

I can't remember it, but I'm sure I used a complex filename so as to avoid it.

What do you suggest to do?

Hi Daniele,

There is a Site Related forum. Try to ask over there. You probably get an answer.

That's probably what's happened.

You could email the corrections editors at corrections@airliners.net or correct it here:

Just as an FYI: Those little wings on the engine are called "strakes". You also see them on the MD-80 and some other aircraft.

Perhaps it was overwritten by a file with a similiar name?

Hasn't Johan implemented software that overwriting afilenames is impossible from now on?

Anyway, seen the inserted data, your details were clearly overwritten.

I put A340-3... as aircraft: if you have the details, you can always drop me an email (check my profile) with the registration of your aircraft so that the correct aircraft type and c/n can be added.

I counted 17 submitted corrections for this picture, with the most diversified answers what it could be and not could be! Big grin

There seems to be something wrong with the 'Photo copyright' below the thumbnail in the thread starter.

AZ: when this problem is not solved soon, I recommend to reupload the picture. You can use the reupload feature provided by a.net (http://www.airliners.net/reupload/)

I'm with IBERIA...definitely an A340. I base this on the fact the winglet appears to have a lower angle and shape than a 744.

The "wings" on the engines that someone referenced are referred to as stall fins. The DC-10 had them for certain, as do many others.

Nah.. the 'wings' on the engines have to do with vortices...not to do with stalls. They smooth the airflow around the engine.

You;re thinking of vertical stall fences on the wings like the early Falcon jets and DC-9's have.

Alitalia MD11,

yes it says so now, but when uploaded it was saying B747-400 perhaps beacause of double filename.

Regards.

Just a side note.
The script does allow change of caption under an inserted A.net photo:

It's more convincing if you get rid of that huge white border  Big thumbs up
Incidentally, the caption at the top of this thread now reads "© Landing Amsterdam." This is getting strange.

I guess with changing the information also that one is corrected...

It is an A340, for sure :

1. Engines are CFMs (see the logo) 747s don't use CFMs.

2. Thrust reverser doors are open. Unique to the CFMs on the 340s or 330s.

3. Engine mounting pylons on a 747 look different.

Cheers
