Which Is Better Star Alliance Or Oneworld

Wed Jan 21, 2004 8:35 am

I'm trying to understand why Star appears to be the "dominant" airline alliance. I presume because it has signed more airlines, but what makes one better than the other?

this should be called A vs. B

One of a hundred reasons argued for Star being the best: 256,000 employees looking after you as your travel around the globe.

Plus Star has it's own livery. (I'm sure this is a huge decision maker for the average business traveller! riiiiiiight!)

Star Alliance...OneWorld...SkyTeam...blah blah blah.

The reality? Those alliances don't mean jack s**t to the average flyer.

Airline alliances are all HYPE. And a way for airlines to sell seats to destinations they don't / won't / can't serve.

My partner is one of California's top-producing Virtuoso agents, recognized annually by Conde Nast Traveler, and he spends an incredible amount of time dealing with in-alliance squabbling between airlines; each of which insists - alliance or no alliance - on playing by it's own unique set of rules. Rules under which the customer is seldom right.

(Would you want to be a stranded, Pusan to Puerto Vallarta passenger, counting on an ephemeral Skyteam affiliation to extricate you from the differing 'rules of carriage' interpretations of two airlines as culturally polar-opposite as Korean Air and Aeromexico?)

If there is a problem with a joint United/Thai booking, for example, United will blame Thai for the error, and Thai will refer the passenger back to United.

In an alliance, no member ever need "own" a problem. There's always another carrier to point a finger at.

For a real laugh, get United and Thai sales reps on a conference call and listen to the two of them deny their respective company's responsibility for any mishandling of a booking.

Think I'm exaggerating? Ask any travel agent their view on airline alliances...

TG's not even that bad... how about UA & AC, or UA & RG, or a real gem: UA & SQ and DL & AF (hard to tell which group despises the antics of whom more  Laugh out loud)

When a business man travels he goes the quickest and best he will not to ften use is FF miles as his business would pay.

How ever when he flies for a holiday or his own cause then he would use his FF miles and the majority of travelers are business travellers so essentially they mean nothing.

More of a perk thing to get into lounges etc.

This is a bit of a question like "Which is better? Ford or Audi?"

There'll be some who get more out of the Star Alliance, and there'll be some for whom OneWorld works better - there is no absolute truth (a bit like with the eternal Airbus/Boeing discussions).

I think an alliance is useful to a specific passenger to the extent that the routes and FF programs of its members serve him well. For me, so far, for example, SkyTeam is the best alliance because its member airlines cover the cities I usually fly to on a non-stop basis: MEX, DFW, ORD, JFK and destinations within Mexico. Of course there will be people in Mexico City who will prefer any other alliance because of their different travel patterns. So, bottom line, it is impossible to give an answer acceptable to everyone because it is a case-by-case matter.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

Not to say, because I mostly fly SAS or other Star members, I would say SAS Eurobonus is quite okay. I almost fly for leisure and at least I will get 100% miles at the most Star carriers even at very discounted ticket, which I almost do. So it depends of where you are living, if you are a business or leisure traveler and where your FF points are going. Being a basicmember about 5 years, flying intercontinental mostly 1 time a year, I have had a free weekend stay and flights with a friend at SAS Raddison in Amsterdam, one free upgrade BKK-CPH and are going to Southeurope this spring. So because SAS is a member of STAR and mostly flying STAR I think it is the best alliance  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Star Alliance is the larger of the alliances, however it is common that One World has better internal linkages between airlines.

Lot of internal problems and errors when flying between Alliance carriers, however with one World it seem to be more seamless. This is what my customers have told me, I have found this an overwhelming scenario.

In essence , I guess it depends on you itinerary to find out who would appear to be the better of Alliance.

However from an Australian perspective one world is better since there is no Star Alliance carrier in Australia.

In general the southern hemisphere is better for One World whilst the Northern Hemisphere is better for Star Alliance. This is due to the following:
Star Alliance pretty poor in Africa, One world has Comair
No Star Alliance carrier in Australia
One World - connections to South America ex Australia, good feeder traffic through AA and then there is Lan Chile and Lan Peru.
No mainland Continental Europe carrier in Europe as yet for One World**
Asian Connections pretty poor in Asia for One World

** Swiss to join around March June 2004

In general,OW have a better distribution of network by continents than Star (OW members in ALL cotinents,OW is the only one in to have a OZ-South America service) Star have many members but OW have a better internal structure...it's just mi opinion

*A means the world to me. I take eight flight a month around southern california on cheap UA coach fares. At the end of the year, I find myself on a free SQ flight to Asia in First Class.

All things aside, the huge advantage to the flying public is the bilateral agreements that these airlines have within their own respective alliances. There is nothing quite like transfering from an Asian carrier, to a US one and then finally to a Latin one all without having to deal with check-in staff. Joint lounges etc are a huge advantage as a lot of these airlines save huge $$.
I am not sure as to who is better. Really don't care, all alliances have their own respective positives and negatives!!

It seems like there is a lot of hype with alliances- ESPECIALLY where Star is concerned. I have heard more horror stories and how the Star carriers can't seem to get along with each other(LH is pissed at AC because of bankruptcy for example) and half the time don't even honor each other's marketing agreements. It seems like the more hype, the less product/service. I've heard similar about OneWorld as well as SkyTeam, so one can only conclude from each one's own experience. I've had pretty good luck with SkyTeam, but it only takes one trip. I just hope my FF miles are worth a .... next time I try to redeem them!  Big grin
