Airlines Named After Owner(s)

Wed Jan 21, 2004 9:20 am

Okay, there's Braniff, Wien, Trump Shuttle and Laker Airways. I think that Ryanair, Muse Air, Chalk's, Ansett and Faucett might be examples as well.

Your additions, please...

And McClain was the name for the founder of McClain International that lasted a few months.

Kalitta Airlines (cargo) used to be owned by Connie Kalitta...I do not know if he still owns this airline outright. You can see Kalitta DC-8's and 747's at Willow Run Airport here in the Detroit area.

Connie Kalitta used to be a drag racer. Interesting.....a former drag racer and a former Formula One driver own airlines.

Connie Kalitta is still right in the middle of Dragracing and back in the middle of Kalitta Airways (Cargo).
Scheduled to run/own/crewchief 3 Top Fuel Dragsters this season the Cargo business must be good.

1. Driven by his son Scott Kalitta
2. Driven by nephew Doug Kalitta
3. Driven by "Aussie" Dave Grubnic

Morris Air was one once...now part of Southwest.
I'm surprised no one has mention Flying Tigers, because in the very beginning it was started by a handful of ex-fighter pilots & their aircraft crews. Regards.

Add to the list:

Morris Air, named after founder June Morris. They were acquired by Southwest in the mid-1990s, 1994 I think...

Here is an example of an ancient airline named after its owner; Maddux Airlines, named after its owner Jack Maddux. This airline existed way back in the 1930s (it was bought out by TWA). This airline gave TWA many of its Ford Trimotors.

DAN Air London

Davies and Newman.

I also think Varney Air Services (now Continental and United?) was named after its owner. Could someone verify?
