BMI Halving Daily LHR-MAD Flights

Wed Jan 21, 2004 9:41 am

I have just noticed that BMI are cutting their daily flights from LHR-MAD from 2 to just one from the new timetable in March. Does anyone know why they are doing this?  Confused

They probably need the slot at LHR due to them starting the following new routes in March:

LHR-Aberdeen 5 x daily
LHR-Inverness 1 x daily
LHR-Naples 1 x daily.

No surprise here - the fares were always the lowest on the route, and flights never very busy! 2 x daily to madrid is not competitive, and x1 daily will be even less so. Just wondering how many more routes will have capacities cut.....

BMI used to have a focus and a mission.... today they try to be all things to all people, and are failing dramatically. They should either focus on being a full service carrier, or being a low cost carrier - they cant be both - no airline has ever succeeded in doing both- many have tried.

When I was in MAD last Wed. and Thur., I only saw one BMI beast (G-MIDF, A321) - even though I was at the airport from 0645 until 1705 on the Thur. And I was in a position overlooking the active runway.

Looks like the BA/IB fare to MAD may increase, Bmi and the Star Alliance need to rethink how they utilise their slots at LHR.

DUB is down to seven daily -1

HAJ is down to two daily -1

Seems like BD are focusing away from business routes to ones with no direct competition, such as NAP, ALC, TFS and INV from LHR, and on Domestics, such as ALC, and away from routes with direct competition, such as DUB, CDG, LIN, MAD, and MAN.

Its tough being the smallest carrier in a market against BA and the oneworld alliance in markets such as MAD and DUB.

The big problem is that BD are quickly becoming irrelevent to the frequent business passenger as they do not offer the frequency required. I know of two companies that have terminated route deals with BD to CDG and DUB because the frequencies are dropping when compared to the competition. The same will now happen to LIN and MAD.

But aren't the business routes the most profitable?
The route to TFS takes up a big chunk of the flying day, the aircraft departs at 10.05 and doesn't return until 19.30, away for over 9 hours, wouldn't it be more profitable to deploy this aircraft on shorter fatter routes and double the sector use?

Richard - it seems that what were BD's most profitable routes, such as DUB and CDG are no longer so due to one-way fare pricing, and increased low cost competition. On DUB, for example BD simply can't match EI on costs, and what was once x9 daily is now x7 daily... and will continue shrinking... The less frequency - the less the amount of business passengers

They hope that by reducing capacity they can compress demand into a smaller number of flights, and hence increase yield. It works in the short term - but people who need and pay for flexibility go elsewhere.. ALthough BD is cheaper than BA/IB to madrid - I usually choose BA - because I don't want to sit in Barajas until 20:15 for the next BD flight - when IB/BA have three in-between. Same thing in CDG - BD's first flight to London is now at 11am - leading to empty flights back to CDG in the evening from London (no paris based pax daytrippers anymore)

BD and the Star Alliance appear to need to review how they utilise their slots at Heathrow for the longer term, because the competition from BA and One World will increase when T5 arrives. My favourite BD flight is the 16.30 LHR-NCE, with a return on EZY NCE-LGW.

I thing the MAD route was to feed UA and other 'Star' carriers in London, however if it's being cut to once a day thats not a good sign.In addition,it's a sad sign that the earliest flight from CDG is now 11am,you won't gain business that way.

Looks like a loss of direction to me...............

Thanks for the answers.

On a different thread, and being a weekly flier between LHR and MAD, I had remarked how much better priced the BD flight was (a business return being around £200 cheaper), and that it would be nice if they had at least another flight. If there is only going to be one flight a day, I am not going to transfer to travelling with BMI on this route.

Surely they should be looking to increase frequency (maybe with Spanair flying into LHR as well) in order not only to be able to compete with BA/IB on this route, but also the LCC carriers - like EZY? Just 2 more flights each way per day would make a big difference to winning lucarative business customers. Seems a shame that such a new route is already being abandoned.

Well, I just tore up my application for BMI Diamond club.

Yep, Already a member but not impressed you don't get tier points on discounted economy - so I tend to use my IB Plus for gathering points - I cannot afford business all the time, and having compared the cards, IB is quicker (and therefore cheaper) to upgrade cards. 40 flights (at least 20 in Iberia flights) a year any class guarantees a Silver card. However, BA has the edge in convienience and automated check-in, though IB are introducing this soon.

IB's quick check-in doesn't seem to be that user friendly - and is tempermental. However they have installed a check-in machine in the Melia Avenida Airport hotel - which is quite handy.

Lack of BA Tier Points on non full fares are quite annoying I must admit.
