Planes You Would Most Like To Return To The Skies

Wed Jan 21, 2004 3:47 pm

Just thought I would post this topic for the fun of it, to see which planes people would most prefer to see fly again. Pretty much, all planes I would like to see back in major service with passenger airlines include the following--the 747SP, the 747 Classics, the 727s, the L-1011s, the DC-10s, the MD-11s.

I would like to see museum examples of classic planes flying. Apart from that I see that there are numerous reasons why they are gone. Most of them can not be operated economically in commercial traffic anymore. So I do not really want them back except maybe the Fokker 70 / 100 which is still very competitive.

The L1011, for sure. Great plane. Ditto for the 727.

And the Concorde, without doubt. The world is a bigger place without it.

I'd like to see the: 707, 720, 727, VC-10, CV880/990, L1011, Caravelle, BAC111, L049-L1649 Constellation, and the HP 42 back in service.

In addition, in my opinion the recent retirement of Concorde was the greatest tragedy since the fall of Pan Am, TWA, Eastern and Braniff...

Ah well.......

The VC-10, the BAC 1-11, the 707.

But time moves on, and none of these survives comparison with today's airliners.

The CV880/990. Only a handfull of potentially airworthy examples in existence, none flying, yet I've wanted to see one of these mysterious old birds since at least 1993!

More 707s, DC-8s L1011s and other trijets @ YYZ would be cool too.

All the ones my company (and yours) has parked in the desert.

After that, I could enjoy:

PanAm Clippers Martin 130 and Boeing 314
NYRBA Consolidated Commodore
American "lighting bolt" DC-6
SAC B-36
MATS C-124
Happiness is not seeing another trite Ste. Maarten photo all week long.

Delta Air Lines Boeing 727-200.

I miss their lazy climbs out over the Deleware River on hot summer days from Philadelphia!

The things I miss the most about the 747 Classics, the L-1011s, and the 727s are the thunderous roars on takeoff--just love the whine of spinning turbines. The noise, without a doubt, is what makes me miss these beauties the most, and the looks.

Concorde-Duh
707 series-only seen one or two cargo ones, and they have such an important place in history it is a shame we can't fly on them anymore.
DeHavilland Comet- Its beautiful, and though not an earth-shaker like the 707, t was the first.
Convair 990-Don't know much about it, but something about this aircraft captivates me.
747SP- Seen one only once, would love to go for a ride on it.
Lockheed Constellation-my god, what a plane

Military:
XB-70- Beautiful, big, and fast... dwarfs Concorde and faster too!
B-58 Hustler-Big, bad bomber.
B-36 Peacemaker- six pushing props, four jets, and wingspan that dwarfs the 747. Nuff said.
B-29- Historic aircraft... to my knowledge, only one is still airworthy.
SR-71/A-12/YF-12-Any or all of these would make my day!

And, probably above all, the Boeing 314 Clipper. That thing has got to be the most majestic aircraft ever built. It's the transition from sea to air, and opened up routes though impossible. The fact none exist anymore (I think) is tragic. When I make my first billion, expect to see a new one  Smile.

Edit-added Connie

I would really love to see:

Aer Lingus Boeing 747-148 (being Irish, I love this airline and its 747s)!

TWA Boeing 747-131 in twin red stripes colors (I flew on this once JFK-MAD and back, and really loved it--my only 747 trip)!

In general, any 747 classic and L-1011.

With the current situation in Iraq and high oil prices likely to continue well into the forseeable future, it's difficult to see any older fuel-hungry airliners returning to the skies, most of all the Concorde.

However, my picks for AirCanada are the L-1011 and the 727.

Civil:

1) Convair 880/990 (TWA)
2) Constellation Super G (In Old "Fly Eastern" livery)
3) 707 (PAA colors)
4) VC-10 (BOAC, baby!)
5) Lockheed L1011 (WhisperLiner colors)

Military:

1) B-36! (Six turnin' and four burnin'!!)
2) B-45 Tornado
3) XC-99 (Is it STILL sitting in San Antonio?)
4) Martin B-10
5) Bell P-39/P-63

Planes You Would NOT Like To Return To The Skies

Thu Jan 22, 2004 6:09 am

I'm (seriously) wondering what planes you would not like to see return to the skies.

I cannot think of any...but I have not been around for a long enough time to really get a good idea  Laugh out loud

 Smile
-Will
P.S. My top choices would be Concorde and the TriStar for the original question (planes to return).

I would really like to see more of the Lockheed Constellations and the DC-7s. The Boeing 377 Stratocruiser as well. However, jets I would prefer much more over these. The flying boats would be cool too. I would like to also see the 707s and DC-8s back. (Unfortunately, by the time I was born, the 707s were gone, and the Delta DC-8s and United DC-8s were gone about a year or two after I was born.)
