EK Advertises New York As Destination In 2004

Thu Jan 22, 2004 1:01 am

There was an ad by Emirates in the recent issue of CNN Traveler which showed all the cities they fly to. Some had a little star behind them, such as Vienna, Shanghai and... New York! The little star said "routes to be started in 2004".

OK, one can advertise a lot, and airlines often have little qualifications like "subject to government approval" - but I would like to know what the latest is on this one. Previous posts have discussed the issue of the absence of an "independent regulatory authority" in UAE - is that resolved?

Who knows more facts (not rumours)?

rumor's out that EK might consider DXB-SNN-NYC until if/when they can get nonstop authority to the USA... or, they may just rely on CO/DL to get pax here while concentrating on Canada

I like EK, used to live in the UAE, but this has been rumored and even announced for so long, that until I see that tickets are on sale for specific EK-operated flights on a specific date, I won't believe it...

They bought planes to do it... they just need DNATA to spin itself off from the EK group, or vice versa.

For those of you who don't know Arabic, look up the meaning of "inshallah" and you'll have an idea what this all is about....

The plan is JFK first, then SFO. After that, nothing is known, but IAH (major oil centre) and MIA (high-yield tourism) have a very good chance of being in thier plans, along with IAD.

Yes, this is correct for those routes and which one will be first one of begun nonstop from DXB to JFK soon and will exactly get subject of pending government approval. What are you else think for EK is added more new routes soon? Thanks!

Actually MIA hasn't been mentioned by EK. It would be a very pooor choice in my opinion anyway. JFK, SFO, YYZ and YVR have been specifically mentioned by EK.

I'm surprised that EK would go to JFK instead of EWR. They have a codeshare in place with CO, so it would seem to make more sense for them to fly to EWR where they can connect with CO's vast American network out of EWR. By going to JFK, they are isolating themselves to O&D without a codeshare partner there. I know that JFK is considered a flagship airport for international operations (although in my opinion it's a dump), but EWR would probably work better in this situation.

You have it backwards... the inverse of the above statement holds true.

um, what would be the inverse?

By flying to EWR, they would reap the benefits of the presence of a codeshare partner....

do I have this correct? I believe that was Cory6188's point

By flying to JFK, it's going for New York O&D and not much more

By flying to EWR, it's primary objective would be transfer to various other markets/

I imagine the market on this end for the NYC flights would be NY-area businesspeople headed to the Gulf and nationals of the Indian subcontinent connecting through DXB on their way home, so heavily O&D biased. Having lived in the Emirates for a few years, I observed that going Westbound, most of the traffic was if not for the NYC area, then for the Southwest or California. If EK wants to use its CO tie-ins to service other US destinations, they might best go to the Houston hub, which is geographically more central in addition to being an oil town and CO's headquarters.

From the EK website, it's 1 June 2004 "subject to govt. approval"

"On 1st June, Emirates launches a new, non-stop service to New York providing the first direct air link between the Middle East and North America. The new non-stop service will dramatically reduce travelling times for business and leisure passengers between East Coast USA and the Lower Gulf and destinations beyond. Subject to government approval, flights will operate with the A340-500 in three-class configuration."

Not exactly the "first direct air link" between the ME and NA, I am sure that among others, Egyptair, Saudi, and Malaysian would beg to differ, but got to love the EK service!

If EK served EWR, they could still capture all of the NY businessperson market while being able to tie into CO's network at the same time. I don't see why JFK would be an advantage over EWR - they are both equally distant from Manhattan, and from what I've heard, EWR's AirTrain seems to be more reliable than JFK's.

Cory, it may just boil down to the fact that thanks to history, JFK is considered NYC's premier international airport (EWR is of course NOT in NYC, or NY State), and EK as a premium international carrier wants to enter the US market by making a bit of a statement. While yes, EWR is convenient and a CO hub, JFK is much more of an international gateway and it is serviced by a vast array of major passenger and cargo airlines from around the world, which can't be said for EWR. But both airports have their markets, which is why many of the major international airlines like BA, Singapore, etc serve them both!

If any middle eastern airline wants to start service to the U.S.A than most of the time they will start with JFK and/or another major airport. Think about it
MEA- JFK (the old route)
Egyptair-JFK
Saudia-JFK
Kuwaiti Airways- JFK
Royal Jordanian-JFK
Gulf Air- (the old route)
also some North african airlines which i don't want to get into
but anyway you see my point

I still find it hard to believe that EK is seriously interested in YVR. I know their is a great indian population in Vancouver but...?

There is a large Indian/Pakistani population in Vancouver, but there are also alot of Canadians working in Dubai and the UAE, in fact many of the expat jobs in the Gulf vacated by Americans post 9/11 are now apparently filled by Canadians.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but according to DOT dockets, EK's request to fly to JFK with its own aircraft and the removal of restrictions that required it to codeshare with CO have been removed (as of Jan 23). Wetlease & Codeshare with CO had initially been implemented when the original request was approved.

"By going to JFK, they are isolating themselves to O&D without a codeshare partner there."

That is correct. At JFK they'd be more limited to O&D passengers rather than connections via EWR. However, if they can fill the plane with O&D passengers, they are generally higher yield passengers than connecting passengers. That is one of the reasons that places like LGA, DCA, and SNA are so desirable...it's certainly not for their connecting opportunities.

Anyone know who will handle them at JFK, and at what terminal? As EK prides itself on offering a premium experience, I would guess they will be at one of the newer terminals where they can have a lounge and such...
