Lebanon/Greece To Sign Air Transport Agreement

Thu Jan 22, 2004 3:01 am

Greek President Constantinos Stephanopoulos is currently in Lebanon on a 3-day official visit. He will be signing many agreements with Lebanon including a passenger air transport agreement. Anyone have any idea what kind of agreement it could be?

Here are the two articles:

Olympic Airways already flies to Beirut (BEY) from Athens (ATH) 4x weekly on 737-400s. MEA flies to Athens (ATH) 3x weekly on A321-200s.

What more do you think this agreement would do? Could it simply be an Open Skies agreement for 5th freedom rights?

I don't really understand the point of it.

Maybe this is a strategic decision taken by the government in order to allow MEA to send the thousands strong lebanese olympic team to athens in the summer.

Think of it this way... What if the agreement means that other airlines can operate the route. That would open up the possibility of Thai, Singapore and so on... to fly to ATH via BEY where they can exercise 5th freedom rights.
