Jet Airliner Songs

Thu Jan 22, 2004 3:20 am

I was wondering if anybody could add to my list of aircraft and airlines in recorded music.

1.Jet Airliner- The Steve Miller Band-"as I get on the 707"
2.Early Morning Rain-Elvis Presley-"big 707 set to go"
3.It doesn't rain in SOCAL-unknown artist-"on a westbound 747"
4.Back in the USSR-The Beatles-"Miami Beach to London BOAC" plus aircraft sounds

IT NEVER RAINS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA was performed by Albert Hammond:

"Got on a board a west bound seven forty seven
Didn't think before deciding what to do
All that talk of opportunities, TV breaks and movies
Rang true, sure rang true...."

"...Well we barely make the airport for the last plane out
As we taxied down the runway I could hear the people shout
The said, "don't come back here Yankee" But if I ever do
I'll bring more money Cause all she wants to do is dance..."

ELO's "Calling America":
"Told her that there was a place like heaven
Across the water on a 747
Yeah, we're living in
In a modern world.

And pretty soon she's really got the notion
Of flying out across the big blue ocean
Yeah, we're living in
In a modern world.

Talk is cheap on satellite
But all I get is (static!)
Information, I'm still here
Re-dial on automatic.

CHORUS:
Calling America (can't get a message through)
Calling America (that's what she said to do)
Calling America (that's where she has to be)
Calling America (she left a number for me)
Calling America.

But I'm just talking to a satellite
Twenty thousand miles up in the sky each night
Yeah, we're living in
In a modern world."

Credence Clearwater Revival had a song called "Traveling Band" were it talks about a 737 "coming out of the night" or something along those lines. It's been a while since I heard song, haven't played that LP (yes, I said LP) in a while. I may spin it tonight when I get home.

Then there's Peter, Paul & Mary "Leaving On A Jet Plane". Steve Miller Band had one about a "big 'ol jet aeroliner". Never liked either group.

Jet Airliner Songs

Thu Jan 22, 2004 5:20 am

Steve Miller Band (Jet Airliner)

Leavin’ home, out on the road
I’ve been down before
Ridin’ along in this big ol’ jet plane
I’ve been thinkin’ about my home
But my love light seems so far away
And I feel like it’s all been done
Somebody’s tryin’ to make me stay
You know I’ve got to be movin’ on

Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay

Goodbye to all my friends at home
Goodbye to people I’ve trusted
I’ve got to go out and make my way
I might get rich you know I might get busted
But my heart keeps calling me backwards
As I get on the 707
Ridin’ high I got tears in my eyes
You know you got to go through hell
Before you get to heaven

Big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay

Touchin’ down in new england town
Feel the heat comin’ down
I’ve got to keep on keepin’ on
You know the big wheel keeps on spinnin’ around
And I’m goin’ with some hesitation
You know that I can surely see
That I don’t want to get caught up in any of that
Funky shit goin’ down in the city

Big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay

Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay
Yeah, yeah yeah, yeah

Big ol’ jet airliner
Don’t carry me too far away
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s here that I’ve got to stay

Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Carry me to my home
Oh, oh big ol’ jet airliner
Cause it’s there that I belong

Iron Maiden "Women in Uniform"

"Coming back to London on a 747
Stewardess made me feel like I'm in Heaven"

and this was back in the days with Paul Dianno, before Bruce Dickenson, the pilot, was singing for Maiden.

Foo Fighters have a song called A320 also.

Cool thread  Big thumbs up However, that Albert Hammond song represented some of the worst music from a decade (at least in my opinion that generally sucked; disco, You Light Up My Life, The Osmond Brothers). Well, folks fasten your seat belts because Zippyjet is going to take you back in the day when Top 40 music was actually enjoyable and you could hear it on AM radio!
1. 1962: Air Travel, by: Ray & Bob
Lyrics by: Ray Swayne & Bob Appleberry
Peak: 99
Year: 1962 here are some lyrics: "Air travel (air travel) it`s the thing of the day
Air travel (air travel) it`s doin` fine
So come on everybody now let`s get on board
We`re gonna take a trip around the world

We`re gonna take a little trip up to China
Just to see the China wall
We`re gonna take a trip over to Niagra
Just to see the pretty waterfall

Air travel (air travel) it`s the thing of the day
Air travel (air travel) it`s doin` fine
So come on everybody now let`s get on board
We`re gonna take a trip around the world."

Chuck Berry Brown Eyed Handsome Man

Arrested on charges of unemployment,
he was sitting in the witness stand
The judge's wife called up the district attorney
Said you free that brown eyed man
You want your job you better free that brown eyed man

Flying across the desert in a TWA,
I saw a woman walking across the sand
She been a-walkin' thirty miles en route to Bombay.
To get a brown eyed handsome man
Her destination was a brown eyed handsome man

1964 and 1964: A big hit twice by Chuck Berry ('64) and Elvis ('74)

"Promised Land:"
I left my home in Norfolk Virginia
California on my mind
I straddled that Greyhound
And rode into Raleigh
And on across Caroline

We had motor trouble that turn into a struggle
Halfway across Alabam
And that hound broke down and left us all stranded
In downtown Birmingham

Right away I brought me a through train ticket
Ridin across Mississippi clean
And I was on that midnight flyer out of Birmingham
Smoking into New Orleans

Somebody help me get out of Louisiana
Just to help me get to Houston Town
There are people there who care a little about me
And they wont let the poor boy down

Sure as youre born brought me a silk suit
Put luggage in my hand
And I woke up high over Alberquerque
On a jet to the promised land

Working on a T-bone steak a la carte
Flying over to the golden state
Ah when the pilot told us in thirteen minutes
He would set us at the terminal gate

Swing low chariot come down easy
Taxi to the terminal zone
Cut your engines and cool your wings
And let me make it to the telephone

Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia
Tidewater four ten o nine
Tell the folks back home this is the promised land calling
And the poor boy is on the line

Working on a T-bone steak a la carte
Flying over to the golden state
Ah when the pilot told us in thirteen minutes
He would set us at the terminal gate

Swing low chariot come down easy
Taxi to the terminal zone
Cut your engines and cool your wings

In the early 60's between Elvis and the Beetles there was a time when songs featuring teenage death were all the rage. The Everly Brothers had a 3 hankie tear jerker called: "Ebony Eyes" 1961

"
On a weekend pass I wouldn't have had time
To get home and marry that baby of mine
So I went to the chaplain and he authorized
Me to send for my ebony eyes

My ebony eyes was coming to me
From out of the skies on Flight 1203
In an hour or two I would whisper I do
To my beautiful ebony eyes

SPOKEN
The plane was way overdue so I went inside to the airlines desk and I said Sir, I
wonder why 1203 is so late? He said Aww, they probably took off late or they
may have run into some turbulent weather and had to alter their course. I went
back outside and I waited at the gate and I watched the beacon light from the
control tower as it whipped through the dark ebony skies as if it were searching for
And then came the announcement over the loudspeaker
Would those having relatives or friends on flight number 1203 please report to the
chapel across the street at once.

Then I felt a burning break deep inside
And I knew the heavenly ebony skies
Had taken my life's most wonderful prize
My beautiful ebony eyes"

Honorable mention goes to The Temptation's 1970 hit record: "Ball Of Confusion" "Oh, Great Googamooga, cant you hear me talking to you
just a ball of confusion, oh yeah
that's what the world is today, hey

Fear in the air, tension everywhere
unemployment rising fast, the beetle's new records a gas
and the only safe place to live, is on an Indian reservation
and the band played on

At that time, hijackings to Cuba was the main hassle of flying.

There's this funky number from Earth Wind and Fire: "Let's Groove" from 1981.

lose yourself in the sky among the clouds in the heavens"

Elliott Smith - Wouldn't Momma be Proud

"can I take your order?" asked the heavenly host
ticket to the jet stream blowing coast to coast
the long stemmed glasses, a movie and a pleasant dream in mid-air
"you gotta tell me quickly, 'cos we're almost there"
wouldn't mama be proud?
pointed out of the window at the sky gone black
"kid, you're on the right track"

Elton John, "Daniel" (?) Daniel is travellin' tonight on a plane, I can see the red tail lights, heading for Spain....

Pink Floyd did one, one of their more recent ones, can't recall the name though...

I don't believe there was a song on the album relating to airliners, but the Beastie Boys' album cover for Liscense to Ill featured the tail of an American Airlines 727

must be more, can't think of any others not already listed.

Thanks for all the replys. I think there is also a band called SR-71. Maybe Seattle based like most rock bands. There is also a song called Sabre Dance, there is a Sabre aircraft but I don't think that is what the song is about.

Since DFW is my favorite airport, this Jimmie Dale Gilmore tune is my favorite airliner song:

Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?
Well Dallas is a jewel, yeah Dallas is a beautiful sight
And Dallas is a jungle, but Dallas gives a beautiful light
Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?

Well Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down
When you are up, she's the kind you want to take around
But Dallas ain't a woman to help you get your feet on the ground
BAnd Dallas is a woman who will walk on you when you're down

Well I came into Dallas with the bright lights on my mind
Well I came into Dallas with a dollar and a dime

Well Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eyes
A steel and concrete soul and a warm hearted love disguise
A rich man who tends to believe in his own lies
Yeah Dallas is a rich man with a death wish in his eyes

Well I came in to Dallas with the bright lights on my mind
Well I came in to Dallas with a dollar and a dime

Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?
Well Dallas is a jewel, yeah Dallas is a beautiful sight
And Dallas is a jungle, but Dallas gives a beautiful light
Did you ever see Dallas from a DC-9 at night?

Awesome, awesome song. How many of you out there have seen Dallas from a DC-9 at night? I have only once -- and that was because I got re-routed. I was supposed to be flying Northwest/Continental DTW-IAH-ABI, but I was delayed in DTW, so they re-routed me on American Eagle DTW-DFW-ABI. The DTW-DFW leg was on a NW DC-9, and I took up that window seat solely so I could see the lights of Dallas from this DC-9. As we approached, I tried to keep the words to myself, but I just couldn't help it. Probably annoyed the person next to me.

Some of you may recall that 10,000 Maniacs did a cover of this song in their MTV Unplugged performance. It's not on the CD, but you can see it on the performance's video (or DVD, if it's out).

And the inspiration is dead on -- Dallas is a jewel, and Dallas gives a beautiful light.

Hi,
in Germany we have a song called "über den Wolken" (Above the clouds), which is very famous here and (not only) every pilot's favorite song  Big grin
Additionally, maybe a little off-topic, Foo Fighters' "Learn to fly" comes into my mind. The video plays in an aircraft and the FAs accidently mix some mariuhana into the coffee so everybody (including the pilots) get high... It's funny...

The Only Living Boy In New York
by Paul Simon

Tom, get your plane right on time
I know your part’ll go fine
Fly down to Mexico
Da-n-da-da-n-da-n-da-da and here I am,
The only living boy in New York

I get the news I need on the weather report
I can gather all the news I need on the weather report
Hey, I’ve got nothing to do today but smile
Da-n-do-da-n-do-da-n-do here I am
The only living boy in New York

Half of the time we’re gone but we don’t know where
And we don’t know where

Tom, get your plane right on time
I know that you’ve been eager to fly now
Hey let your honesty shine, shine, shine
Da-n-da-da-n-da-n-da-da
Like it shines on me
The only living boy in New York
The only living boy in New York

Bloodhound Gang - Kiss me where it smells funny

You came twice last year like a Sears catalog,
Cause your last boyfriend makes love like Boss Hogg,
Well now you're seeing me but soon I'll have you seeing God,
Cause girl I'll get you panting like you're Pavlov's dog,
Like a DC-10: guaranteed to go down,
But baby your black box is the one that I found,

I'll give you the gift that keeps on givin' it won't cost you any money,
Then she grabbed me by the ears and said kiss me where it smells funny.

Kind of a double meaning here, but we won't go in detail  Nuts

In Germany we also have the band MODERN TALKING.
And here's the lyrics to their hit single "Jet Airliner":

The times were hard and I was running
I could feel my chance was coming
Another time, another place
A pillow filled with frozen tears
See the gates, a distant fire
Shows the way, to my desire
Laying down my heart for you
'Cause I'm lonely, feelin' blue
I know that I'll never die on love
But I'll never get enough
Oh, I got no time to lose

On my avenue to a jet airliner
Avenue to my broken dreams
My avenue to a jet airliner
Like an old old movie - scene

My avenue to a jet airliner
Brings me back to the dreams I loved
Good guys only win in movies
But this time babe I'll get enough

(The avenue is closed, is closed forever)

Love can breed misunderstanding
But my heart will soon be landing
Another love on golden wings
Oh, I'll buy you diamond rings
Waitin' for a lonely rainbow
Magic wave where will I go
Breaking down my heart to you
'Cause I'm lonely, feelin' blue
I know that I'll never die on love
But I'll never get enough
Oh, I got no time to lose

(But you know, yes you know you can change it)

I wonder what they are trying to say or why the song is called "Jet Airliner".
But from a band that also has songs like "China In Her Eyes", "Geronimo's Cadillac" or "Cheri Cheri Lady" you wouldn't expect that, would you.

 Big grin
Where have all the tri-jets gone...

This is my first ever post but, I have one. It actually mentions two airliner types. Audio Adrenaline, they are a Christian Rock group. Songs name is DC-10.
Lyrics.

DC-10 fell on your head laying on the ground all messy and dead. Or a Mack truck ran over you. Do you know where you are going to go?

747 fell out of heaven crashed through the roof of a seven eleven your gulping down a slurpie things hazy reach for the drink nor your pushing up daisies. Do you Know were you are going to go straight to heaven or down the hole.

Those are the lyrics it kind of a jazzy rock feel to it just so you can sort of get the feel for the song.

In Christ

OK..Found it..from CSN (crosby Stills & Nash, 1977) "Just a Song Before I Go" This sorta applies to the topic..

"She Helped me with my suitcase, she stands before my eyes. Driving me to the airport and to the friendly skies."

Haven'r heard this one in a long time...
