I love it!

AA restructures St Louis and redploys regional jet service to ohare from many cities once served thru STL and now the FAA is looking a reinstating limits to traffic in there..Better not count STL dead yet...

Lifting slots at ORD has choked itself on RJ's ,much like what happened at LGA a few years back!

Mineta has plan to ease O'Hare gridlock
United, America agree to reschedule some flights

U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta will announce Wednesday a short-term plan to reduce delays at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.
Starting in March, United Airlines and American Airlines have agreed to shift about 5% of their flights from peak hours to less busy times of the day, according to a government official familiar with the plan.

There will be no cap on the total number of flights per day and the voluntary plan will expire in six months.

With last year's gradual recovery in air traffic, delays hit a record high at the world's busiest airport in November. About seven out of 10 arrivals were late during peak hours, ranking O'Hare last among the nation's 31 busiest airports.

Federal rules governing the number of takeoffs and landings per hour expired in April 2002 but traffic has only recently reached levels seen before the terrorist attacks of September 2001. Without action, congestion delays are expected to get even worse this summer.

Earlier this month, Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., called on Secretary Mineta to convene a meeting of the two airlines under a new law that allows competitors to discuss scheduling to relieve airport delays. Instead, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials have been meeting separately with United and American to work out congestion relief measures.

United, a unit of Elk Grove Township-based UAL Corp., had already announced it will shift about 300 flights a day, starting in February.

Representatives of United, Dallas based American and the Chicago Department of Aviation had no immediate comment pending this afternoon's official announcement.

See below. It's not a shift - but cut in flights. Forgot STL, send the planes to DFW - it's slow around here compared to pre-9/11!!


WASHINGTON, Jan 21 (Reuters) - American Airlines and United Airlines are cutting peak-hour flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to help ease mounting congestion in U.S. skies, the Transportation Department announced on Wednesday.
Effective immediately, AMR Corp.'s (NYSE:AMR - News) American and UAL Corp.'s United (OTC BB:UALAQ.OB - News) "voluntarily" will cut 5 percent of their peak-time operations. More drastic, government-enforced, measures may become necessary, Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said in a news conference.

In recent months, flight delays at O'Hare -- one of the nation's busiest airports and the one hit hardest by congestion -- have had a domino effect throughout the U.S. air traffic system, Mineta said.

First, if ORD has a stormy summer, which was the case in 2000, AA managment may consider increasing flights out of STL, as the relief valve.

Winter storms are somewhat predictable, up to 48 hours in advance. This gives an airline opportunity to reschedule or reroute passengers. Not so with summer thunderstorms that can blow up out of clear skies. That, along with UA's pilot wrecked havoc on ORD in 2000, which is why AA bought TW.

Second, UA and AA have got to stop running so many RJs into ORD. AA is adding RJs or replacing mainline flights to MSP, RST, IAD, and BNA, as well as other cities. UA is running RJs to STL, ATL, as well as other cities that had been mainline. Even DL is running RJs to DFW and CVG, and they've pulled the 767s off ORD-ATL.

If given a choice of 5 or 6 RJs or 3 or 4 mainline jets, I'll take the latter. Just as given a choice of 12 MD-80s or 737s going to LAX or 6 to 8 767s, I'll also take the latter. I know airlines want to appeal to the business traveller who wants a myriad of choices, but I would rather have to work around the airline's schedule to fly a comforatable plane.
