I Want To Start Spotting! (NYC Area)

Thu Jan 22, 2004 1:34 pm

Hello! I live in NYC. I would like to satisfy my desire to begin spotting aircraft. Can anyone tell me the best way to get started in the NYC area?? I can easily drive to LGA, JFK or EWR, and would have happy to drive to any of them anytime. Can someone familiar with spotting in NYC give me some advice about how to begin??

Thanks in advance!

Benjamin -

There is a thriving spotting community in and around the NYC area. Feel free to e-mail me at josh_akbar@hotmail.com if you'd like to talk.

As for advice on how to "begin", check out Art Brett's website anniebees.com, which has some useful information for spotting locations around JFK. LGA has some great spots, too, but I can't think of a website off the top of my head that has a list of spotting locations. Unfortunately, I don't know too much about EWR since I have never actually gone there for spotting.

Anyway, like I said, feel free to e-mail me if you'd like to talk more.

One more thing...check out the Aviation Photography forum, which is where you should probably post this kind of message. You'll get lots of responses there.

You need the "Bible" also...

It costs roughly $70.00, but, its well worth it.. When I was spotting airliners back in the late 80's till the mid 90's, I was getting this book annually.

Also, a good tip.. Dont forget to enjoy the aircraft... I got to the point where I was just looking at the numbers and not the aircraft... Stop and enjoy the aircraft..  Big grin
