AirIndia Livery What Do You Think About It?

Thu Jan 22, 2004 6:00 pm

I love the AI livery. It is gorgeous. I especially like the cool window architecture and the bold AIR-INDIA letters. What is it like inside one of those cool AI 744's?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Hi 744

Being from India and being used to seeing the AI 744s, 743s, A310s and the occasional 742, I find the livery quite boring and old. It's been unchanged since the 1970's.

However, it's different, when you compare it with the more modern liveries of competing airlines. The 'window architecture' depicts the windows in palaces of India, of years gone by. While it is only a single color (red, if you accept white as the universal background color) it comes across as flowing well, especially the part that goes up into the tail of the aircraft.

However, I am of the opinion that it's time to change. Any good world class airline worth its salt does an image makeover every few years (7-10 yrs would be the average I guess) which includes a change in livery, sometimes a change in logo, repainting of aircraft exteriors and refurbishment of interiors etc etc.

Air India needs a lot to be done to improve its sagging image. It needs to be re-launched in more ways than one. It needs new aircraft to replace the old 742s, 743s and A310s. It needs re-motivation and retraining of staff to make them serve passengers better. ......and it needs a new owner, who will make it the world-class airline it truly deserves to be.

However, your post will delight those who like the AI livery & logo, no matter how old it is.........

Cheers

Funny thing is its a classic! I mean it stands out so much, when you are at Heathrow you can spot one of their aircraft a mile off...

I think it needs to be updated, I know they tried a while ago and it did not go down very well.

I once flew on a Boeing 747-400 from LHR to JFK and even though their livery is a classic, the inside of the aircraft needed some updating! Food & crew where very nice though.

I like the livery very much and say, "leave it alone."

But, if the AI livery were to be changed, the window architecture and the "Maharaja" must remain.

It seems that AI's current livery was actually designed only for the B747. The B707s they had before they got their first 747-200s has a completely different livery. And in my opinion , it is a beautiful livery for a big aircraft like the 747.

AND NOTHING LOOKS UGLIER THAN THE AI LIVERY ON AN A310!

Although I think AI has a great livery, I wouldn't mind seeing it updated for the new millenium just as long as they don't pick something like JAT, PIA, etc.

The AI livery is old fashioned. It's too busy and hence messy. The individual red border around each window and the narrow cheat lines give it a cluttered look.

I find the livery of their sister airline Indian Airlines to be very modern despite it being around for some time...the white fuselage was ahead of its time. The stylized "IA" logo is excellent.

I've spent a lot of time in India - both on holidays and on layovers. It's one of my favorite countries. In my mind I associate India with brilliant colors; gold...orange...saffron...hot pink. (Fashion doyenne Diana Vreeland quipped "Pink is the navy blue of India.")

So while I'd retain the classic Taj Mahalian window motif (and the plucky little Maharaja who dates back to 1946!), I would like to see the Air India livery receive a colorful update.

AI's livery is one of the best, especially I like the painting around the windows.

Edit: They have also a very cool mascot, you can see it on the left side in the picture below:

Both the mid-1960s 707 and the current 747 AI liveries are, in my opinion, among the most beautiful. My only suggestion would be to enlarge the centaur motif and include the marahaja mascot next to the exits. Otherwise, I say, "keep 'em."

The chances of Air India changing its livery radically anytime soon range somewhere between zero and negative.

Those with short memories may not recall the fiasco in 1989 when they attempted to modify the livery. It is impossible to quantify what that misguided step alone did to shatter employee morale. I think back to the launch party at the Oberoi that year and remember folks streaming out of there in tears after seeing the proposed changes.

So love it or leave it, the AI livery is here to stay unless someone gets kickbacks again to change it *cough*RajanJetley*cough*.

Don't get me wrong, I am a fan of the current AI livery (though I agree the planes should be a bit shinier), but I think that the Maharaja needs to be updated. While the Maharaja is a classic, I don't think it (he??) accurately reflects the current "on-the-cutting-edge-of-technology" population on the subcontinent that he is supposed to be representing. Does anybody else agree?

On a sidenote, once I was dropping somebody off at JFK and from the Delta terminal rooftop parking garage I could see the Air India and PIA 747 a/c sitting next to one another at terminal 4 like brothers hanging out...I wish I had a camera with me to capture that moment.

Although I think it is an overall lousy airline (with nice people), I think Air India's planes are very cool looking. I hope they do not change it in the near future.

I think it's time of a change.

I really like the "Sun" logo that was present on a few planes. It was
really classy. I would like to see it comeback.

I think that it's superb and befits India's glorious image and rich history.

DON'T CHANGE IT AI...

Was AI ever a world class airline?, I believe that the answer to that is that it was and at one time the two most sought after carriers between LHR and DEL were either BA or AI.

I've flown AI both to JFK and DEL both times on the old 742's, the interiors for the time were sumptuous, the service was average and the staff were very condescending, everything seemed liked to too much trouble.

I think that AI could become one of the greats again if,

1. They modernize the fleet, new 777's, 744's, etc not crappy Airbus.
2. Retrain the staff and get them to put the customer first
3. Do something about the terrible overbooking system that they still hang onto, this is truly appalling and I believe that AI is the only carrier that still operates this unacceptable practice.
4. Improve the First and Biz products.

Just my two pennies worth.

Actually remember reading somewhere that in the 1960s the four best airlines in the world were Pan Am, TWA, BOAC and AI !

How much things have changed since then!

There was a time when the first Chairman of SQ famously declared when his airline was just taking off, that their dream was to be like AI some day.

I think the AI livery is a classic yet dated. Would love to see a new scheme with more of the Centaur while maintaining AI's distinct window design. I also wish they'd have the Centaur logo at other places on the airplane fuselage than just merely the engines

Another observation I have, which a lot of you may have noticed is the difference in the white colour on the B744 and on the B742/743. The one on the B744 is definitely a shade paler (and IMO looks better) rather than the chalk white on the B742s. Also the blue antiglare paint they have on the nose of the B742s for some time now is in jarring contrast to the rest of the scheme (whose bright idea was it anyway??). They ought to get rid of both the black and the blue altogether on the nose of the B742/743. My points can be observed by checking out the photos below:

I think it was Sean who posted a note once that each Maharajah (btw AI always spelt Maharajah ending with an 'h') above the airplane door (from the inside) is actually hand painted by AI tech staff - UNIQUE.

I also wish they'd paint their registration especially on the B747s (which have a steel underside) in black. It is probably the most difficult registration to read on any aircraft. Alternately they could shift the position of the registration to just aft of the rear exit on the white part of the fuselage for better visibility.

Another point on my wish list relates to the A310s - especially some of the leased planes whose anti-glare nose paint reminds me of Hitler's moustache. Why not have no black at all and instead have a white radome for the 310s? The 744s however look like huge big toy planes with their red-noses - and therefore really cute IMHO.

Just my INR 2.50

Why was there so much emotion surrounding a livery change? How can an updated livery shatter ee morale?

The current livery needs an update. So does the airline. They could keep the palace windows, but contemporize the overall appearance. Even paint the belly in that dull metallic silver that you see on NW birds. The bare metal looks shabby, because unlike AA that keep their planes looking sharp, the babus of AI dont feel the need to shine their planes.

I bet that if JRD were around, he would have made a subtle contemporary change to the livery by now. The big Air India billboard title in Hindi looks horrible - like someone shot a big wad of paan juice on the fuselage. Its just too messy. The interiors are shabby and ugly too. And whats with the clip-on ugly black ties the male cabin crew wear? The 742s had gorgeous interiors, and the designer sarees worn by the female cabin crew, and the indian style jackets worn by the male cabin crew were fantastic. Now they all look like they bought their uniforms from "Shalwars-R-Us" at Chinchpokli.

Maybe AI needs an anglicized Parsee-French hybrid in charge again. Or an Indian Richard Branson. The new babu may be competent, but he just aint got that airline groove thing going.

Yyz717 For once we see eye to eye, I was wondering myself what all the fuss was about, the rejected AI livery was quite stylish, only they used terrible fonts and the Hindi title made it worse, the Sun logo could have been bigger and half could have been on the white part of the tail as well, gold palace windows could have been applied, it would have looked even better on light grey paint of even Silver, the present livery is not that bad except for the tail but it needs a definite make over, retaining the windows.

I think Air India should change to something like that instead of keeping the current one which makes the planes look like fifty years old. By the way, I also think they should maybe get some A330's or something else to modernize.

I think that they are much cleaner than AF and other major carriers. Take a look at this:

There was nothing "Flamebaitish" about PIA777s comments, dont let patriotictic feelings blind you to the truth. PIA's new livery is bad only because of the colours used and that cheap flag, atleast its uptodate and not from circa 1900.

Current livery is really nice but could use an update... I would keep the cheat line and the window treatments, but put the centaur that is currently a small logo on the engines on the tail. What y'all think?

Actually only AIC and AID have the "blank spot" you are referring to. The third leased KE place EVJ has windows along the entire fuselage.

The AI colours are awesome and the old 742 were luxurious inside, the 744's have not taken this onboard and are thus quite dull.

Don't even think about changing the exterior AI, it's glorious and instantly sets AI apart.

Personally I think that the livery is quite dated. In the 1970s it must have been stunning though. I think that unfortuneately Air India desperately needs an image makeover. I think that a stunning modern livery could be found that would be colourful, modern and distinctly Indian would go a long way in changing the perceptions of the airline. After all Air India was known for its excellent service and had a very good reputation in the 1960s. I think it's time for Air India's renaissance.
