You mean new paint scheme for dc10? Surprised to hear it. Wasn't a/c 6641 (could be off a few #s here ) (742) supposed to be in new colours?

Just been looking at some pictures of the Big-10s, and the paint on many of them is dire, and has been for months - I thought there was no chance they could keep 'ORTHEAST' jets flying around for another couple of years  Smile Looks like it may not be the case.

Anyway, this is the one in question?

I don't understand why anyone would be surprised that the DC10's are going to be repainted. Many of them will be in our fleet for years to come. The aircraft illustrations in World Traveler Magazine have shown for months what the new livery will look like on the big trijets.

It must be that "people don't think planes ever get repainted" mentality. That they get repainted w/ old scheme many times, so what is the difference if it is in the new scheme?!

Is glh the company painting the A/C? All of NW's A/C get painted in Armarilo, Texas (KAMA).

A/C 6638 a 742 came back from AMA about a week ago, and I saw the tail of a 747 in the new colors sitting over at C-world on my way home from work, but then again 6316 went out as flight 19 the next day...

Do you mean the "Block" scheme they had when buying RC? If so, I didn't, but then I was so p----d it could have been the best flying and I'd still hated it. After simmering a few years I'd have to say it was original and boring at the same time. Looked like something that wasn't finished. Need I say more.

AFAIK, Northwest is painting aircraft at DHN, GLH, and AMA. Until this DC-10, the larger a/c have been going to AMA. Many DC-9s have been going out to DHN and GLH lately for their paint.

Is it possible for anyone to shoot me an e-mail of the return flight information? I would like to see it arrive at MSP and get some pics up here. I can be reached through my profile. Thanks.

I can't wait to see it. I think it will look great! I hope they paint the entire tail red though, not just down to the engine as shown on NW website.

Patches,
I am pretty sure that they are not painted down to the bottom so the logo on the tail is uniformly placed on all of the planes. I am not exactly sure how that works out, but when you look at the tail of a CRJ next to an A330 the trailing side of the triangle rests along the rudder. The vertical placement looks to be in the center of all tails too which makes the amount of the circle on the tail different. IMHO, it just looks cleaner than painting it all the way down. I didn't take the time to look that up, but I'm sure someone can clarify a little bit more for you.

DC-10's, DC-9's, 742's Geez! Why don't they go out and put some tri motors back in action? THESE PLANES ARE TOO OLD! And funky, and are just going to sink this airline! I can't believe these people play the bury your head in the sand routine when it comes to THE FLEET! NWA Has been my A/L for 40 years, and they have lost a massive customer base on account of the ragged old A/C they keep painting over and over... It's 2004 people! do as most everyone has done, send the 9's and 10's to the desert!

Most of these DC-10s are the age of your average airline's 767s.

These people have no idea what kind of plane they're flying on.

Learjet23, let's be realistic here, most people don't care how old the plane is, or even what kind of plane it is. Not to mention the fact that Northwest really isn't in the place where they can replace almost 200 planes right now.

Sure dont look her age tbh!

That is the most recent photo (in September of last year), is it still in service along with its sister N230NW that came off the lines 2 months later in November 1972?

I'll bet if you told Richard that you'd all take a pay cut to match the Pinnacle folks who are taking your jobs he would put in some orders Monday.

If NW had climbed on the reorder bandwagon when AA and DL did they would not have the 2.4 billions cushion that allows them to not be so strongarm on the givebacks - yet

Learjet23:

May I point out that Northwest is not in bankruptcy, like United. Nor teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, like American. Nor on the verge of liquidation, like USAirways. Nor losing money Big Time like Delta.

I guarantee you that fear of an airline going belly-up is far more of a deterent to bookings than the age of an airline's fleet.

It would be different if Northwest had a poor safety record. But they do not. (Compare our sterling safety record with that of every other U.S. major!) Our aircraft are well-maintained and 99% of the customers onboard have no idea what kind of plane they're on; much less how old it is.

Passengers watch (or don't watch) our flight attendants perform the emergency demo during taxi, sit for hours with an emergency instruction card emblazoned with the aircraft type INCHES from their face, and then ask on deplaning "What kind of plane is this?" You think these people know what decade a plane dates from??? It got them from point A to point B safely, and on time. That's ALL they care about.

You're out of touch with reality. And while YOU may wish to steer clear of Northwest for fear of getting on a less than brand-new plane, understand that you are but one in a million...

I cant buy the explanation on the paint job on the tails. the RJ's would look fine with the tail painted all the way down. sombody else said it would mess up the compass look. how? there has to be a better reason than that.

"They have lost a massive customer base"

Do you have any numbers to back this up? If this is true, how does NWA manage to have the highest load factor in the industry month after month?

Maybe it's just me, but I thought that the partialy painted tails was a reference to the old Northwest Orent Scheme of the 60's.

Anybody else see the retro-reference?

To the person who dislikes NW.

NWA is in the strongest financial position of ANY legacy airline.
NWA's safety speaks for itself.
NWA's load factor is the highest year after year among the legacy carriers. Even AA could not match or surpass it while taking seats out of their aircraft.

Yes it is 2004. And NWA does not offer anytype of service people are not willing to pay for. Much less waste money just to be the first to fly something. They pay to maintain their fleet and ensure futures for their employees to the best of their ability in this changing environment. NWA also invests in technology to give the passenger the best way of a hassle free travel experience. IE, online check in ect.

So give it up man. You can't win this debate. While NWA is not perfect. I am glad they are who they are.

Does the new paint job tend to change a little when your looking at it away from the sun? It seems to have a tinge of green. Also, you can count me the second in a million. I do not fly on airplanes older than me. Not even Cessnas.

The new paint does tend to shimmer a bit, from a gold to green depending on the light, but if the A/C gets into the right light it looks kind of blotchy. However, I've only noticed it up close.

Sounds like I may have to bring my camara to work tonight.

Okay, I don't get it.

The comment above says that NW has lost "a massive customer base." How can that be when all their planes are flying full?

In the 28 flight segment I've flown on Northwest since December 1st, almost every flight has been full, and on most there have been standby passengers to seat.

So at *best,* that comment is misguided.

Learjet

JetBlue and NWA don't compete in the same markets.

Also real business flyers, as opposed to imaginary ones, gravitate toward airlines with real, live frequent flyer programs. And Northwest's is reknown as the best in the business.

So, keep up the posts. They're really funny.  Laugh out loud
