Gimli Glider?

Fri Jan 23, 2004 11:08 am

This might sound a little stupid but what is the story behind the Gimli Glider (AC 767) I heard parts of it but how do you run out of fuel in mid-air? Was it a mis-calculation of how much? And at 40,000ft. I thought that the service sealing is something like 36,000-38,000ft? How many 767's does AC own a operate. And I was planning on flying SFO-YYZ on AC, is that a A319, A320, or A321? As I remember their seats sucked, I saw a pic of a A321 and the seats looked better and the headrests were way more improved. Just wondering b/c I haven't heard of such a thing.

Do a search in the archived section as there was a lengthy thread on this just a while ago.

Yes the Gimli Glider ran out of fuel at 41,000 feet and glided for 13 minutes to the airport of Gimli, Manitoba. If my memory serves me well they put in something like 22,000 lbs. of fuel instead of 22,000 kilos. The bird is still flying today with a few other 762's that AC has.

There was a fuel calculation error, something to do with a conversion, AC has lots of 767's in their fleet atleast 30. Its a mix bag from YYZ-SFO, my gf's parents were on AC756/757 YYZ-SFO-YYZ they were on an A321 for their trip last year? So expect an airbus.

Hope that helps, and there is more info at http://www.aircanada.ca
