DUBAI - Emirates airline, with one of the world's fastest growing fleets, said yesterday that it was interested in Boeing's planned 7E7 plane but needed more information before deciding whether to order it.

"We are very interested but are waiting for much more details from Boeing before making any plans for the future," Mike Simon, senior vice-president of corporate communications at Dubai's government-owned Emirates, told Reuters.

"We would like the 7E7 to have a little longer range and a little more capacity," he said. "But it looks very interesting."

Boeing said last month it would accept orders for the proposed 7E7 aircraft, taking a major step towards launching production of its first all-new airliner in more than a decade.

The mid-sized wide-body 7E7 - designed to save cash-strapped airlines money on fuel and operating costs and to help Boeing claw back sales from rival Airbus - is due to enter airline service in 2008.

Emirates has about $26 billion in new planes on order, including 45 of the massive Airbus A380s, for which deliveries begin in 2006.

It expects to double its 51-strong fleet by 2012.

Well I always knew EK would be a strong contender but only because The 7E7 was a smaller capacity jet than it's other jets and would cover niche markets.

With the 7E7 proposingthe following
Base model of 200pax,7800 miles, 3 class model.
Stretch model of 8300 miles and 250pax, 3class model.

Obviously EK is looking for something larger and to fly farther than the above.

If Emirates could persuade Boeing to incrase the range of the B7E7, then Emirates might order a huge amount, say about 30-50 planes. Emirates might then cancel any A330 orders that they have with Airbus

OK. answer me this, what airplane isn't EK interested in? They are the most eclectic airline as far as fleet goes!

So basically EK is looking for a more efficient 777

I wonder if this Emerates statement might conceivably affect the 7E7's final design, which must be close to being locked in. Quite frankly, I'm surprised it wants even more range than the 8300 nm of the Stretch unless it means to operate it on ultra-long-haul routes similar to those its' A345s already fly. On the other hand, Emerates may have a point about the capacity of the Stretch being a bit short, initially Boeing had described a 250-300 passenger airplane for the 'super-efficient' study which led to the 7E7. Perhaps, a 300 pax variant would enable it (along with the 772) to help Boeing compete against the A333 and not just the A332, as the envisioned 250-pax Stretch will do. Then again, if Emerates alone wants more airplane than other interested carriers, it won't happen. Let's face it, it's in a class by itself (RICH!).

EK has mentioned before that they may replace its entire A 332 fleet by 2015 with B 7E7s if it matches their requirements and needs which I think it will.

The 3 class 250 seater B 7E7...EK can use to replace on long haul flights involving their A 332s.

They can also make the 7E7 Stretch into a 2 class configuration and replace it on all currently operated 2 class A 332 flights to India-MAN-Middle East etc etc.

This aircraft is basically designed to replace old A 332s-B 762s-B 763s-A 310s-MD 11s and A 300-600Rs on all the routes they serve.

EK should not be asking for this aircraft to initially meet the demands and specifications that a B 777-200/300 has as that is not what BOEING wants its target market to be.

If EK want more capacity then they should just convert the 3 class B 7E7 to a 2 class which will seat easily 300+ pax and the 200 seater 3 class B 7E7 into a 230-250 seater 2 class B 7E7.

BOEING hopes that eventually EK replaces its entire A 332s with B 7E7s or adds it alongside them in bulk numbers and eventually down the road replaces the A 332 with B 7E7s.

BOEING should seriously approach Air India to order 20+ B 7E7s 200 seater 3 class models to replace their very large fleet of 19 A 310-300s by 2008-2010. PIA too will need a suitable replacement for its to be 10 A 310s by 2008-2010.

I can say with confidence that EK is not interested in resurrecting 727's and 737's from the desert.

El Al will probably replace its 6 767's (one more will be leased this year - 767-300) with 7E7.

Most airlines will replace their 767s with 7E7s when the time comes. Right now, Airbus does not have a plane to compete for the 767 replacement (the closest is the A330-200, the 7E7 stretch will outperform it most likely).
