YYZ New T-1 Trail Day On 24 Jan 04

Sun Jan 25, 2004 3:48 am

Today is the trail day for Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ).

I arrived at the New T-1 parking garage at 8:45am, and then proceed to the West Bridge for the terminal building. There will be two bridges link up the parking garage and the terminal building - East and West.

After crossing the bridge, GTAA representative greeted us with a folder, which is my assignment for the trail. I was assigned as a passenger for Alitilia AZ 2051 from YYZ to Montreal, departure at 12:00pm, Gate 140 in new T-1. A 2-mins safety tape was showing and then proceed to the Departure Hall. The Hall is great, very bright and modern, finally YYZ shows something comparable to it's world class status. Breakfast refreshment was provided, nice touch. Then all the crowd were divided into different groups for different routines. I was Group 1, as a car rental passenger, return the car at the 1/F of the garage, with one regular luggage, GTAA prepared some real luggages, some of them were really heavy!! After pick-up the luggage, we were released and then with the "itinerary", I walked back to the Departure Hall with my luggage and line up for my flight to Montreal. What a big line....it takes me almost 30 mins for check in, Alitalia ground staffs check-in for me, I asked for jumpseat and vegetarian meal!! Really funny, her response was:"Sorry, special meals required 24-hours advance notice and the flight is entirely full today, so no upgrade can be provided". Ok...fine, then she asked me if I want window seat or aisle, I picked window. Boarding was issued and I proceeded to the security check. Surprisingly the security check is very clsoe to the public area, a little bit abnormal. Anyway, inspection as usual then I walked in the restricted area. The lounge is great but I think not really have enough seats! I can view the empty Terminal 3 East gate, not the time yet for T-3 East and also the Old T-1 with 2 Air Canada B763 and some CRJ and Dash-8 under Jazz livery.

Some entertainment were provided near Gate 140, so most people were not bored before the "boarding"

Gate opened at 11:45 for "boarding. NO real aircraft for boarding of course. We walked in the boarding bridge and then U-Turn on the half way. Once we U-Turn, we became arrival passenger and the walk back to the Buggage Claim.

The Buggage Claim area is huge and ....in my opinion, the arrival level's design is soooo similar to DTW NW World Gateway. BUt it is good. BUt the sign is not good enough to direct people from Buggage Claim to the Arrival Hall, improvement is required in this part. I have special assignment, i was assumed I lost my luggaue and have to report to the Alitalia Buggage Counter. But...no one was there. I asked the GTAA staffs, they said they have no idea where the Alitalia staffs!! Poor AZ...anyway, I left the Buggage Claim for Arrival Hall. I have already reported the case to GTAA in my survey and ask for compensation!

Free lunch with sandwich and pop by GTAA, chicken or beef, sounds like inflight catering service. The trail approximately ended at 1:00pm. YYZ T-1 is great when compare to the old one and T-2.

Klyk1980,

It was not a 'trail'! That's something you go hiking on.  Smile. I attended the trial too, and got lucky. My group had to make a connection with a flight departing from Terminal 2, and this meant an interesting bus ride with close up views of planes taxiing past us at close range. The most interesting of these was the AC Star Alliance 762 C-GAUB. I got a picture out of the back window of the bus and may upload it to A.net.

The packed lunch was better than on previous trials, and we also got a gift this time - a miniature FM radio.

The trial was just awful.

It ws 11:45a before we did anything... and we had waited for 3 hours just doing nothing..

Yeah, I suppose in your case, it was - I mean, it was in Toronto.  Nuts

It ws 11:45a before we did anything... and we had waited for 3 hours just doing nothing..

You mean.... waiting around for hours for your flight, just like in a real, live airport? Must've been like flying Air Canada......  Big grin

I am so sorry that I make spelling mistakes again......I was rush to post it up once I back home..

Olympus69 you are so lucky....in some case, the trial was boring. I tried to spot some crafts from the terminal but it was so quiet.

If these trials are so boring, then why go? I heard the same comments about boredom after the earlier trials. No offense intended....just an honest question.

I dumped at the gybe mark in strong winds when I looked up at a Porter Q400 on finals. Can't stop spotting.

I thought some aspects could have been handled better. Our group were supposed to be Wayfinders and would be watched to see if we had trouble finding where to go. We had different itineraries but didn't get the scripts for them until we had gone through security. I got through in 20 minutes, but it took 50 minutes before all 43 members of the group cleared security and we just stood around waiting for everyone. Then we got the scripts and were released 2 at a time to start the trial.

Ya, our group didn't start until about 11 as we had to re-check our baggage in arrivals. Some parts were slow, but it was kind of nice just to walk around and explore the place before it opens.

By the way, what do you guys think of the new terminal? Not the trials, but the terminal itself? Well done or overrhyped? Anything lacking?

Cheers - Skytrain.

The terminal itself is great. BUt do you guys think the gate area is too small for a busy airport as YYZ Air Canada's hub? It will be a terrible experience if i visit the terminal again @ 8:30am after its official opening.

Some signs are not clear enough, for example from Parking Garage to the terminal and also from the luggage claim to the arrival hall. It is bad it invlove one level downward after deplane for luggage claim.

KlyK1980,

Don't forget this is just the domestic area that will be opening in April. When the International Pier F is built there will be plenty of gates. I'm not sure when that's supposed to happen.

It is bad it invlove one level downward after deplane for luggage claim.

Then you have to go back up one level to reach the bridge to the Parking Garage.

Olympus69;
What time did you arrive at the terminal? We were told about the interesting script... But, we may have arrived too late to receive it. Had the same script as FlyYUL. Didn't see you at all, by the way. Maybe you were too busy driving around the airfield taking pictures :-]

Hopefully Pier F will open to the public as soon as possible.

By the way, I saw the Westjet sign near in departure hall aisle D, is that mean...Westjet will use T-1 later? They are going to triple their flight in YYZ....

Yeah, WestJet will be moving into T-New, as it was part-and-parcel with their schedule enhancements to YYZ.... it was mentioned in their press release about a week ago. That's supposed to happen at or around April 4th, I can't remember the exact date......

I was at the trial, and was disappointed with the script I had. I was told there were a few scripts that included a bus ride along the tarmac. Unfortunately, I was unable to get one of these scripts. Thank you Mr. B! (You know who you are)  Big grin

In my script, we were very unproductive, and had to wait around for far too long. I will likely still go to the next trial though, call me crazy.

By the way, I did like the food better this time. Those chocolate fudge cakes were delicious! Anybody have any left?  Big grin

Like I've said previously, I like the new terminal. It is a little lacking in colour in a few areas, but overall very modern, airy and comfortable. It also gives very nice views of the tarmac at certain spots.

All these experiences do sound like the last few trials they had at TNew, boring and slow.

Did anyone get a gift this time? That was the biggest disappointment the last time, they talked about a gift in the intro at TNew but in the end everyone got nothing.

The boarding / waiting areas at the gates do seem a bit tight and they will have congestion to deal with on some of the big flights.

Hi Tony,

I got to the Parking Garage at around 8:40 or so. There was a line-up to get into the garage - made worse by one of the 3 ticket issuing places malfunctioning, so it was about 8:50 when I got my script folder (White). I arrived at security on level 2 (for connecting passengers) at 9:30 and headed for the bus at about 10:30. We were on the bus for over half an hour, and then I went to gate 124, supposed to board at 11:40 but was delayed until 12:30. Finally I was an arriving passenger and went to the baggage claim to pick up a bag with a red ribbon.

I thought I saw you at security screening - in the channel on the extreme right, next to the wall. You had just gone through the doorway, but had gone before I got close enough to see if the person actually was you.

Skytrain,

I was disappointed that there aren't more shops and restaurants in the groundside areas of the building - before you go through security. I compare it with MCO which has like a small shopping mall in the main concourse. The fact that Orlando is a tourist area may have something to do with it.

1world,

Yes, we did get a gift this time - a mini FM radio with a belt clip and ear things - no speaker.

John, it's too bad I didn't see you there either. I guess you were having too much fun.  Smile

BTW, I picked the calculator.

I also hear they ran out of meals  Sad

I wasn't given a choice of gift.

I'm not surprised they ran out of meals. Some people probably went back for 'seconds' to take home with them  Smile

I'm not surprised. Every gathering has some pigs.  Insane

So have any other airlines confirmed that they will be flying out of T-New on opening day other than Westjet?

John, I admit, I had more than one meal  Big grin but they had 2000 meals for about 1200 people. I'm sure many people ditched the meals, and most just had one meal. Obviously people who weren't supposed to have meals went for them as well. Oh well!  Smile

I was given the choice of a calculator or radio, but I did get there quite early. Neil didn't go, so he got nothing!  Big thumbs up

What about UA? I presume they will migrate with AC at the same time.

Olympus69,

I completely agree! I was so angry - and confused that there seems to be so little shopping available! I always find myself buying a few magazines, a newspaper or some snacks before I leave. Many airports look like a mall inside the departures area, whereas T-1 has about 6 scattered shops. I wonder why the opted for so few stores??

Cheers - Skytrain.

Skytrain,

Actually, the December 2003 GTAA update book lists:-

13 Restaurants
10 Newsstands & Bookstores
8 Other Shops

However, all of the above except a couple of restaurants, and maybe a bookshop, are located in areas beyond security screening.

Yyz717,

UA is staying in Terminal 2, as are AC and Jazz transborder flights.

and so will the aircraft spotting and photography opportunities be for YYZ visitors...

Goose: say what you will about YEG, at least by design, there are public observation points on the mezzanine level of the north terminal. Although part of it had been notched out to accomodate an office, it's there.

Yes, I saw that the meals had run out also. When they ran out, they started serving those round pizzas which weren't that great. The trick is to be one of the first to get there. Then you get the choice of wraps. Even if you arrive early to the trial, the free gifts are all there and you have your choice. It's not too clustered either when you arrive early so one can enjoy breakfast  Smile
But, on the other hand, I think the lunch was much better and the trial went smoothly as planned. Well, checking into the Lufthansa flight took about 25 minutes. The ground crew lady had put two pieces of luggage on the weight machine (sorry can't think of the name for that right now) instead of one. Finaly a GTAA representative had to tell her that was not the case and that doing this would cause the system to break. Boarding passes were issued. Well, just two of them. The paper ran out for the third ticket to be issued and took about 5 minutes just do find the paper roll. 10 minutes later, she figured out how to fix the machine since the airline ticket was jammed in the machine. But other than that, we got off to a great start. Security was fine, except someone got stopped and they made him take off his shoes and put them into the x-rays. Not sure why, but, once we made it to the gates, entertainment was there to great us. You could say some people had no interest in watching a man with different kinds of snakes, turtoises, turtles and everything else with scaly skin, or watching magicians do their card tricks for everyone to see. In fact, they stayed with everyone even as we got to the baggage pick up area. Magician, reptile guy. I enjoyed the entertainment, some people never even realized they were there!
Looking forward to Feb. 21st, the next trial
-Corey A.
