CO Starting EWR-SMF

Mon Jan 26, 2004 6:04 am

Found this looking through the scheds:

CO 1628 EWR 1740-2100 SMF
CO 1629 SMF 2200-0600 EWR

Starts 2 May 2004 with a daily 737-700. Sacramento goes from no non-stops to New York City area to two non-stops, on two airlines, to two airports, in only a span of two weeks.

That's great for the people of Sacramento. Didn't DL announce a SMF-JFK Flight before 9/11. Did that ever start?

They announced it in early 2001, along with JFK-SJC, for a June 2001 start date. It was canceled in late March 2001.

Delta Airlines was scheduled to operate with a 737-800. The outbound SMF-EWR was a morning departure to connect wit European flights. The inbound JFK-SMF was to be in the evening to have connected with inbound European flights.

JetBlue, now has another airline hot on its tail... Continental Airlines.

By far Continental Airlines can connect these flights from Sacramento to Newark with Continental Airlines day flight from Newark to London, and many..many East Coast and Caribbean connections. The inbound from Newark to Sacramento will afford passengers to connect from Continental service to Tel Aviv, Europe, South America, Caribbean, and East Coast due to the evening departure time from Newark to Sacramento.

Surprisingly, I'm actually happy  Smile Though I do not appreciate the fact that JetBlue will have competition, it's only one other flight to compete with, and I think it's great that the people of Sacramento will actually have selection for their flight to NYC! This obviously is a move to follow JetBlue, but I wish Continental luck (and profits) on their flight also. Anyone know what the flights start at (prices)?

This is really great news for the people of Sacramento! Like Portland it seam to always be a challenge to getting new service when your Airport is going up against cities like San Francisco, Oakland, and Seattle. I just hope in time Portland luck will improve some with more service also.

FYI: Continental does not have a day flight anymore to to LGW. Their first flight Gatwick is at 6:30PM on CO18 followed by CO28 at 8:30PM. The only day time connection CO passengers could make to London would be on VS to LHR at 8:20AM.

The flight on CO is $512 rt. How is that gonna compete with B6 at $268 rt ($198 with sale far) or other airlines such as HP or AA which offer it for $287 rt (connection or 1-stop)? I'd definitely forget that $512 fare and go with the one over $200 cheaper, even though I do enjoy flying CO and think they are an excellent airline when it comes to service.

North American Airlines (Maui Charter)

FYI, Lhr001, the North American Maui charters are to/from Spokane and Boise, not Sacramento.

They have no charter service between Maui and Sacramento. Thier charter service is between Maui and California operates five times a week to Oakland. They operated a few OGG-SMF trips for SunTrips, but they were not a regular opreation.

I think that CO is doing the right thing. B6 needs some competition.

well THAT explains a lot! Im over the hill , not two hours away in RNO and for me to get to the NYC area its $300-$350 ( about the price for me to get to SFO currently)- but I can leave out of SMF (and direct too!) for closer to $200..... Was curious as to what the situation was- but very interesting CO chose to open up this route, I have to take them through Houston to get to where Im going! I really hope this doesnt mean that more airlines are going to be setting up shop in Sac and avoiding RNO because im tired of my choice of WN, WN, or WN to go anywhere.

If JetBlue is successful in SMF, they probably will start service from JFK to other cities that have little or no flights to NYC. Reno will probably be the next one if Sacaramento does well, then perhaps Portland, Oregon. Maybe Fresno...does have statistics for how many people travel that route daily? I would also think Albuquerque, New Mexico and perhaps Tucson, Arizona.

I think these would be very profitable for JetBlue as other airlines are just avoiding these cities from NYC. However, they are large cities with dense populations which would enjoy non-stop service to NYC - especially with an LCC - right?

After seeing JetBlue just announce SMF-JFK, I think we were all waiting for the other sure to drop with CO's just announced EWR-SMF service. I (and I am sure many others here) saw this one coming!

Gee, am I psychic or what?

No way CO will concede ground in the NYC area. I remember when Western Pacific launched EWR-COS. CO was in that market in a flash as well!!

CO has done ABQ-EWR nonstop. Think it was Saturday only though. Think it's long gone though. If JetBlue does it, as I said before, CO will be on them like white on rice!

Let the games begin!

We certainly don't like it when people invade our home turf, but don't expect any kind of cutthroat pricing and capacity dumping like we are doing with ATA EWR-SFO. We just want to keep all our bases covered, and we expect to net plenty of international connections off this route, something B6 can't do and why there is no reason we should not be successful in this market.

The EWR-SMF flight is timed well for international connections. However, the SMF-EWR is not. One would have to wait 12+ hours at Sacramento just to catch the first flights to Paris or London.

I believe CO was looking at the VS EWR-LHR AM flight for connections, and keep your eyes peeled for an EWR-AM), Netherlands">AMS morning flight as well, possibly operated by NW or KL. This coming from a F/A on a flight LAX-EWR the other day, but he seemed to know what he was talking about... take it with a grain of salt!

Please don't think i'm knocking competition whatsoever (and certainly nothing personal toward you 777gk), but it's always interesting to me when people say how successful Airline X should be in a market, yet they don't think about starting service until Airline Y has announced plans to enter the market.

I'm always reminded of the phrase, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

I honestly cannot imagine why anybody would want to fly a redeye from the west coast to connect on to a daylight to London. It would basicly take off a whole day from one's schedule, as opposed to connecting in Los Angeles or San Francisco, leaving in the afternoon and getting into London the next morning.

The most likely thing is that they will route SMF-Europe customers via IAH on the way there (assuming it is LGW/CDG/AM), Netherlands">AMS) and via EWR on the wayback.

Excellent news for SMF!

I'm sure the flight will be greatly appreciated. During the holiday our CO TUS-EWR flight was full almost everyday...even with the higher fares. It's very convienent and people will pay the extra money for the nonstop. Of course it's also great news for the HP agents in SMF...more CO flights keeps them employeed!
Catch a ride on a smile!
