BMI's New Route To Be To YYZ?

Tue Jan 27, 2004 5:45 am

From a source I picked up news that BMI will start flying to YYZ soon dumping (not sure) their AC codeshare. Can anyone confirm this or is it jsut another rumour up in the air that isn't confirmed yet?

Is there even any speculation about this route so that BA have competition?

Cheers

Why would they dump the codeshare? Both BMI and Air Canada are Star Alliance members. They can codeshare on each other's flight. For example, United and Lufthansa do it on Dulles to Frankfurt.

Apparently an announcement is to be made very soon and new routes expected are YYZ and ANU.

The extra service may not be ANU, could be a different region of the world. If, and when, the YYZ service is announced (May be a good month to book it) , I would imagine that AC will be codesharing it.

AC already does British Midland codeshare flights... 2 or 3 a day I think!

If they are to start it won't be codeshare.

From what I head AC will drop the route which BD will then take up with A332s flying daily with AC codeshare (4th May start date rumoured).

The relieved AC 767 will apparently be used on YYZ-FCO

RICK -
Would love to see AC resume/return YYZFCO. According to the Station Manager at FCO, AC may not be able to return to Italy for up to a year, because of some clause within Italian labour laws. AC attempted to replace its own staff with a contracted Aeroporti di Roma staff. While a similar scenario took place at GLA and ZRH, this tactic is a no-no in Italy which may result in a year long moratorium.

Hope I'm wrong on this one!

The 767 in question is the 767-200ER.

According to the Canada/Italy bilateral, Alitalia and Air Canada are not allowed to fly side by side on any Canada-Italy route. Hence, if AC wanted YYZ-FCO, it would only be able to do so from YUL (which is the right thing to do given that AZ now has the COMPLETE lock on Toronto-Italy with dailies to MXP and FCO without AC codeshare).

If AC goes back to FCO, its from YUL. Unless AZ suspends something from out of YYZ which is unlikely. (Funny how AZ has threathened to pull out of Toronto about 10 times this year, due to high fees....)

YYZ isn't governed by Bermuda II, is it... so why would they fly out of MAN instead of LHR? Any inputs?

BMI's interest in MAN-YYZ is contingent on AC transfering the route. BMI could fly LHR-YYZ assuming slots at both ends....
