Aeromexico To Announce HMO-DTW And Others...

Wed Jan 28, 2004 4:21 am

In an interview with a local newspaper, HMO's Administrative Director announced that Aeromexico will be operating a non-stop flight from Hermosillo to Detroit by April or May, using a 757 or a 737-700 because they are the only planes capable or covering the distance between these two cities. The main reason he cited for the flight, is because of the second plant that Ford is currently building in Hermosillo. He offered no more details about the flight and noted that the number of U.S. cities served from HMO is now going to be 7 (SLC, LAS, LAX, PHX, TUS, ELP and DTW).

He also announced a couple of more flights that have been confirmed by the airlines. Those flights are:

Aeromexico:
Hermosillo - Detroit - Hermosillo
Hermosillo - Cancun - Hermosillo

Mexicana:
Hermosillo - Mexico City - Hermosillo (which was cancelled last year)
Hermosillo - Morelia - Hermosillo
Hermosillo - Los Angeles - Hermosillo

And this is where I have a doubt. LAX is currently being served by Aerolitoral and Aerocalifornia from HMO, which means that in order for Mexicana to operate this flight, one of these two companies is going to have to drop service to LAX from HMO. Being this a very profitable flight for both airlines, why would they drop the flight?
Reason tells us that Aerolitoral being a Cintra owned company, is probably going to pass the route rights to Mexicana

OR

Aerocalifornia is not going to be in business anymore and then Mexicana can get the rights to fly this route.

What do you guys think?

Is this posted on their site? Or is there any confirmation of the source? If so a new airline for DTW. I bet they will get stuck in the Berry Terminal unless they clear customs in Mexico in which case they will get the "glamorous" LC Smith Terminal.

Hi,
Well a couple of days ago, we took the northern regional director of AM to mty, and he told us that now with the embraers , one of them was to be put on HMO-LAX, becuase the saab is to poor for that flight! I remember when i used to fly that leg, that on the dc9s, we were almost always full, and on the MDs we had good load factors. Also he told us that they also wanted a MTY-DTW, so thats maybe the start of DTW with HMO and maybe then MTY. or vice-versa

See ya!

Keep in mind that Aeromexico is a SkyTeam member, and with Northwest planning on joining SkyTeam in the new future the flights would likely go to the WorldGateway and not one of the old terminals.

I flew to IAH this week and noticed a lot of passengers connect on CO to MTY. Is this a tourist spot or production? Both?

Fly2hmo:

I knew about this for a while, but it was just a rumor back then. I spoke to the airport Director before making this post and he confirmed what the newspaper stated.

About the posts, I forgot about this account and I recently started using it again. You are going to start seeing me post more often =)

Greetings from sunny HMO

Not really a tourist spot. The city's residents are, for the most part, very wealthy, especially in comparison to others in Mexico. They have a very large upper class. Hence, Monterrey has a lot of transborder destinations, including tourist destinations like Orlando, Las Vegas, Miami, and New York City, more for the purpose of Monterrey travelers than visa-versa.

You know the director!!??  Wow!
Please don't come up saying that he lets you walk down the runway whenever you want!!!I'll get a jealousy attack!!! HMO is too small for two A.net guys!!! Wink/being sarcastic

I hope AM's 757s go at 50% capacity at least from HMO.

And what happened to MX's 757s? They came here for just about a month, haven't seen them anymore.

Know the spotting place for rwy 23 on the 1st street to the right of the Pemex? Quite a show down there!! Big thumbs up

By the way, tell the director I sweep runways for free  Laugh out loud

Monterrey is a huge industrial center, home to a very large number of companies listed in the Mexican Stock Exchange and in the NYSE. It is Mexico's third largest city behind Mexico City and Guadalajara and has superb universities, convention facilities, hotels and entertainment venues. Some of the municipalities that comprise Monterrey's metro area are perhaps some of the most prosperous not only in Mexico but in all Latin America.

I wouldn't mind seeing Aeromexico take over Allegro Air's void at OAK.

On a similar new route, AM just posted FareSavers BOS-MEX for $255 roundtrip and includes the inaugural flight. Those of you over there should consider this cheap option to make history on the inaugural flight. They also posted BOS-CUN for around $300 (can't remember exactly), but very good deal (all roundtrip).

If I had the time, I would do it. I love to fly on inaugural flights!

Indeed very good news for Hermosillo, Mexicana and AeroMexico.

This new HMO-DTW-HMO service will be 4x a week with B737W. During summer and winter or peak days they'll send also the B757.

Also I have heard strong rumours for MTY-DTW-MTY and also it would be a 4x a week service with B737W.

Looks like the 737 will be AM's new horsepower!

Expect at least 2 more new routes announcements to the States from Mexico City on AM.

Ricardo:

Do you know if it's going to be scheduled to depart or arrive (can't do both because of the distance and time) with the rest of AM's flights to the rest of Northwest Mexico (TIJ,CUL,MAZ,CUU, etc...) as to take advantage of AM's HMO hub or this flight is only going to serve HMO? Also, probably, this flight is starting and MEX and finishing there, right?

Also, thanks for the reply in my other post.

Cheers from sunny (and right now very chilly) HMO =)

It seems odd to add a HMO-DTW, even 4x. Not that I disregard market in HMO, but I am always very skeptical on such topics. If AM is adressing this service to carry executives and engineers from Ford plants and other feeder plants between the two places, probably will face a huge failure.

See, NW, whose main hub is DTW, barely flies 7x with a A319 between DTW and MEX. Both cities have very strong economic ties since MEX is the site of the local General Motors HQ. GM in Mexico is not a tiny firm, but the 10th largest firms in Mexico (in terms of income). However, demand between DTW and MEX support only one daily flight... not to mention that some pax could use DTW as a connecting point with NW.

We could think in a service originating in MEX and then heading to HMO to continue to DTW. But, wouldn't it be a little bit off the road? HMO might become a hub to Western US, but why to DTW? Instead MTY seems to be better placed (in geographical and economic activity terms).

Anyway, you know I am always skeptical. In case AM really decides to start this route, I wish them all the best... but will not last long. I would like to stand corrected otherwise.

I think you can pretty much take TIJ out of the list, people here commute to SAN and fly from there to the US and other international destinations.

I didn't asked that, but I want to guess that the flight will be coordinated with all those AM operations and it might origin at GDL or perhaps MEx. Definitely the MTY-DTW flight might origin at MEx.
